So, as you may know, I run our newspaper's Web site.
It is a provided system we use from College Publisher, a company that provides Web site templates and servers for most college papers in the country. We recently switched to the new system they offer, Polopoly 5.0. It is a customizable system, very nice, but it does what it does, if you catch my drift. Everything from layout design to formatting can be adjusted and changed, but it is not an open-ended system.
So, today, an editor is talking to me, and says "You know what would make the Web site better? Like, what would drive site traffic up a lot? Some sort of social networking thing, like Facebook."
I laugh... Oh wait, she is serious.
I explain to her "Yeah, College Publisher doesn't offer that. We have what we have."
She stares at me, and goes "Well couldn't you just build it yourself?" Like it is that easy to build a Facebook system from thin air.
After no less than 5 minutes explaining to her that while the system we use is nice, we cannot just "make" a social networking tool. And add it. We just can't.
She finally said "You just don't get it" and walks off.

Obligatory "We get it, you're in the media."
Did you send her back to the kitchen?

Can you add a comments part after the articles posted? Maybe that's what she wants.

For the record...
... The creators of Facebook just made it from thin air.

Or maybe she was thinking of embedded links to social networking sites, like the digg/reddit/stumbleupon/etc links many articles have.

I hate when computer illiterate people try to talk about like they know what they're talking about.
Makes my blood boil.

I already have commenting turned on. People use that all the time.
No, she was talking about making some sort of system, that would function completely within our own system now. She essentially wanted Facebook, within our Web site.

Just make a facebook page for the paper. Then tell her you created the whole thing.

aside from how amazingly difficult it would be for one person to write and maintain the code for that, who would use it when you already have facebook and myspace?
Maybe some user submitted news? But when you use a customizable system, it makes customizing kinda difficult, like those freakin website templates[/mini rant].

Nobody!
A couple of major daily papers have tried using the social networking thing, and the ONLY people that use the stupid things are the Web site editors are their friends and family, because they sent it to them and told them to check it out.
It's one of those tools which seems kinda neat on surface level but just doesn't work.

What marketing people fail to understand is the underlying reason why people (younger than 30) use facebook.
It's to stalk that hot girl from high school.
Not to play zombie wars, not to read advertisements, not to do ANYTHING ELSE except look into other people's lives.

Whale,
Sadly, if this was the real world (not a college paper) you would probably already be fired for "hindering progress" and "being negative." She would then search until she found someone who would implement her stupid idea and when it failed they would be fired for "incompetence." She would eventually get a promotion for her ability to manage sub-par subordinates and her strategic vision.

Welcome to my world.
You get used to it in time. Outrageous ideas from people who know nothing about technology...it happens all the time.
I had our assistant superintendent one day ask me if I could change the software that we purchased that writes our report cards so we could include some line or comment section, I don't remember what it was exactly, but it took me 15 minutes to explain to him that I didn't CREATE the software, I can't just change it to fit his needs. I don't think he ever really got it.
