I'm trying to venture from airsoft to paintball, as it appears easier to find paintball players than airsoft. Anyways, trying to decide on a good beginner gun. I can get a used 98 custom on the cheap (about 60 bucks) and upgrade it, or I can pay the apprx $200 and get an A5, but probably won't have much left over to do upgrades. Probably will just be skirmishing with friends, mostly woodsball, I suppose. My main question...could I get the 98 custom upgraded to go toe to toe with, or outperform, the a5, with upgrades that put it at a comparable price? |

If the 98C is in good condition, go for it. At that price you can add a decent hopper and barrel (J&J) get a couple of 20 oz CO2 tanks and have money left over. (Which you should save up for a response trigger.)

The main difference between the 98 and A5 is that the A5 comes stock with the cyclone feed and most 98's now come with the Anti Chop Bolt (ACT). ACT is not needed if the gun has a cyclone feed. You can add a cyclone feed to the 98. In fact, if you start with the Tippmann 98 Ultra Basic, you can add a cyclone feed and be about the same price as a Tippmann A5. The Ultra Basic does not come with ACT or a hopper. This makes it perfect for upgrading to a Cyclone 98. |

I would agree with Mack. I would however, ask how new the 98C is? I personally like the E-grip/trigger over the Response Trigger and not all of the 98C's were compatible with it. If you plan to try to upgrade to an E-grip, than, you may want to consider the A-5. Performance wise, the two markers are virtually identical in stock form. With you spending $60 on the marker, you could get and RT for $50, 20 oz Co2 tanks for $15-20 each and a cylcone feed for another $50 or so. You may have to upgrade to a "super RT" kit with larger 1/8" lines for both the RT and Cylconde, but these run about $25.00. So for around $225, you could have a nice marker that will outperform a stock A-5. Buying a new A-5 and equipping it with a comparable setup would run you at least $300. You may also want to consider buying a used A-5. I pick up E-gripped A-5s every once in awhile for $120-130. I have seen RT versions going for $100 at times.

Its a preference thing. I personally don't like 98 customs that much. I love my a-5...

It is a matter of preference. You can also get the same exact performance out of a 98 though.
