Clap clap. Well played.

My dad hunts Prairie Dogs with his M1A... I don't see how it's fair, the bullets are like 1/3 of their height... Haha.

He keeps the Garands locked up though. I'm pretty sure the M1A is his baby though, he even took off the really good looking stock to put a surplus one on so he could drill it for a bipod.

how much do garands go for these days?

Depends on the source.
If you're eligible to purchase from CMP... you can get a "Rack Grade" (Fair) for as little as $500. A "Service Grade" (Good to Very Good)will set you back $600. And a "Correct Grade" (Very Good to Excellent) $950. My Garand is "Correct Grade".

Now, using a local gunshow by comparison...I saw several "Fair-Good" Garands for $750. "Good" Garands were around $900. "Very Good" Garands were $1050-1250. I didn't see any at the last few shows that I would consider to be "Excellent" condition, but can only guess that they'd be over $1300.

down side to CMP is that you have to shoot in atleast 2 CMP matches  or belong to a club that the CMP recognizes.  A "beater" M1 is a great way to learn the rifle.  Shorty!  Time to hit those stocks with linseed oil!

That's shorty's weapon. I don't modify it if I value my kneecaps. That's HIS sissy pad on there.

Yup. I have sissy pads on all of my 30cals.
The point is for me to enjoy shooting and get as much in as I can. Don't want to stop prematurely cause my widdle ol shoulder hewts.
Besides, what do I need a steel buttplate for? If anyone gets that close to me where I'd need it, I've lost anyway.

I've never shot a CMP match in my life. My state grassroots organization qualifies as a club (and helps ensure my rights at the state level... VCDL.org), or anyone can join Garand Collectors Assn for $25/yr and have it count. You can figure your way around the requirements Ceesman! And I highly recommend it, given you will not find 30-06 ammo cheaper than CMP. The fact that it's actual M2 ball is a bonus.

No BLO for me. Actually, if I wanted a correct refinish, I'd use Tung Oil. They stopped using Linseed and switched to Tung by '43 I think.

Shorty: Get rid of the **edited** pad for god's sake. The rifle weighs 10lbs and it's gas operated. Then fix that sling, it's upside down and backwards and then teach tallen to use it if you really want to drill targets. I'll try to ind and excuse to shoot mine and get some action pics.

I knew I got the sling wrong! I slapped it on minutes before leaving for the range...wasn't sure which way it went, and eventually just gave up and put it on as-is.
Backwards and upside down...gotcha.
As stated...sissy pads stay! My shoulder doesn't need to meet steel, and these rifles will never be used as clubs!

while we're discussing weapons and rifles; so no crap there i was...

deep down in jersey at fort dix and qualifying on the weapons. this one kid we have, from Lebanon or some such place, normally has some idiotic story to tell, or that can be told about it. so out on the pop up range, after we zero the weapons, he was heard to say, "i am shooting for head shots but i am missing, where on the head itself should i be shooting?"

at first we thought that he meant where on the body, and then he corrected US, saying that he was aiming for the head specifically, on the body. good times. guess you had to be there to really have a good laugh

also, can anyone explain why a 5.56 out of an M16 has a trajectory where it starts straight, goes up around 150 meters, and then around 300 starts to come back down? someone was telling me about it, but i don't really understand why

Its probably climbing gradually but you dont notice till 150 meters. Could be due to many different things

i know that generally when a bullet exits a rifle its trajectory is an arc, and by typing that out i think i just answered my own dumbass question. FML.

The bullet is not climbing. If you held a rifle level and dropped a bullet at the same time you fired the rifle, both would hit the ground at the same time. It's sighted in for a certain distance and any closer than that it's generally higher. POI @ 30 yards or so is the same as @ 300.

honestly, i have no idea. its just been one of those days. i dont know whats going on and i feel like i belong in a robe and slippers standing in line to take my meds. i hate being the last person to catch a bug around campus and home.

Actually a lot of rifles are sighted in so they ARE arcing.

The barrel isn't parallel to the ground. A typical AR has iron sights WAY above it's bore, so you won't notice the arc until it is way out.

The bullet gets launched on a ballistic trajectory, so it doesn't climb, per say, it is launched at a slightly upward angle.

Parallel

Arcing

However, sights are in a straight line. You can't curve light. So a rifle and it's sights aren't consistent with the flight of the bullet for it's entire flight.

A parallel sight and barrel configuration means the bullet will never reach where the sights are aimed. The bullet will always be falling away from the sight picture.

This is why you "zero" a rifle. You set the sights to match the bullet flight path with zero deviation. A typical sight zero will match the bullet path twice. The Near and Far zero. The Near zero is more or less incidental, you sight the rifle in for the far zero. But if you shoot in close quaters, you need to know where your near zero is.

Rifles like the Garand, M1 Carbine and the M14 have sights that are very very close to the bore. This means there is very little distance the bullet can "raise" before it passes through the sightplane. A typical AR with a carrying handle has a much larger distance between the sights and the bore, meaning the bullet will have further to travel before it passes through the sight picture the first time.

Faster bullets generally shoot "flatter" because you don't need to lob them quite as much. However a well known but little used fact is you can generally tailor your zero for a specific situation.

For example the .303 British round is a pretty decent one, as they go. There is quite a following for it in South Africa as it is one of our Mil Surp rounds. Cheap and easy to convert rifles, and plenty of ammo. However people insist it has a trajectory like a rainbow, because with a 200m zero, at 250m it has more falloff than than either .308 or .30-06. Which is true. It does. However zero the rifle at 220m, and it will pull better POI/POA shots at both 150m and 250m than either the .308 and .30-06.

The curve is still the same, but you've configured it better.

Incidently, the .308, .30-06 and .303 all come in around 175grain bullet combo's, and the speeds are 2600fps for the .308, 2650fps for the .30-06 and 2450fps for the .303. That aint all that much of a difference but you'll get people who swear the .303 falls out the barrel onto your toes while the .308/.30-06 are like lasers.
