im a little ticked cuz a guy gave me crap today because im not enlisted.

most of you know im a civilian employee for the navy.

I took an(the) oath to serve my country, I signed a 5 year contract with the United States Navy saying I would serve the fleet. Every day I go to work and expose myself to extreme hazards for my country.

how is my service any less than his?

is it boot camp? i have 4 years of training before i can be considered for a mechanics position in my trade (40hrs a week + school at night on my time)

i have respect for the service, but dont be a tool if someone is serving their country differently than you do/did.

T&O?

There are always going to be the people who think that way, that think they deserve some sort of special constant thanking for doing it. They even exist on this forum.

You cannot do anything about it really other than just shrug it off and know they represent the minority mindset.

it happens...there are people like that. likewise i've met members of other branches that crap on me for being army, and even by--this was my favorite-- the national guard, for being a cadet.

Dealing with pricks like that is why I want to persue a career in veterinary medicine, the dogs/cats/cows/horses can't say stupid stuff to you.

You have nothing to be ashamed of.  In fact, my hat is off to you for your service and I applaud you for it.

It's the same crap I get from grunts. But they don't complain when I bring a tanker full of water or give them a ride in the back of a seven tone instead of walking. You support people. With out you others wouldnt be able to do their job. Your doing something for your country and the Navy. So he can just buzz off.

place that i was trying to make a purchase at offered a military discount. i asked about it and he asked if i was military.

i told him i work for the navy and he told me that wasn't good enough, told me to come back if i joined the military...

it was a few more words than that and he had a real attitude about it...

i dont mind if a place doesnt offer a discount, or even if they only allow it to go to active duty, but to have an attitude when i have hundreds of dollars to spend...

i spent 50$ more at the next place (got 100$ gift card) and dont mind spending the extra $ (not really extra cuz i got a gift card) at an establishment that had kind people behind the counter.

haha. In all honesty I have had good officers and bad officers. Most of my good officers were a product of ROTC, the good ones were usually enlisted previously. I have a bit of a bias but whatever.

^ need to edit your post...

while im sure ROTC to officer is a lot like becoming an engineer without being on the floor 1st. its still the smart way to get into the military...

01 makes a lot more than that their 1st year...

question: does ROTC count towards your served time for leave? civi side we get 4hrs per 2wks for 1st 3 years then 3-15yrs its 6hrs per 2wks, then after 15 its 8hrs per 2wks.

they pay for his school, give him money, and he gets that little O before the number in his rank...

my step dad makes 60k with 20 years as an E7.

yeah, my bad warman,..i was a little out of it last night. wasn't trying to square off.

some interesting people get commissioned, but not all of us are dumb enough to go ask for batteries for chem lights. thats all i'm going to say about that

rotc years do not count toward our time served, basically because its so broken up. if you do the math, its only 2 weekends a year for training exercises, and 4 hours a week for freshman and sophmore, and 8 hours a week for juniors and seniors. so to count that as active duty time would be a giant slap in the face to people who are actually on active duty.

also warman, we do have some E5s who are in rotc after being deployed because it was easier to use the GI bill to get a degree through rotc than doing ocs

i know it wouldent count as time towards retirement, maybe im thinking about active counting in the civy world or vise versa. cant remember but we have some people who come in making a WHOLE lot more money than the rest of us.

DOesn't matter what they think, just know the fact that you still are serving the country in your own way.

Take solace in the fact you probably have more education, and therefore, smarter, then that guy.

E-5s, in my experience, are generally useless and a drain on society. But that's just *my* bias coming out.

Merc,

Were you dealing with a civilian employee, active duty doing a second job or ex military?  Was it an on-base or off-base facility?  So many unanswered questions.  Either way though, a simple "I'm sorry the discount is only for active duty personnel" would probably have been sufficient.  (It would have been good business as well.)

My view as ex-military is generally as long as someone is doing an honest days work for an honest days pay they are serving this country in some form or another and they have nothing to be ashamed of.*

*Except for financial sector CEOs and journalists.  (Which reminds me;  I haven't received my thanks for serving yet today and I think it's Whale's turn.  LOL)

he was ex-military working a civi job, off base.

(only reason i knew he was ex-military was because he was B...ing to another customer about how much he hated being in the navy...)

it happens... almost glad it did, now i know to spend my money else where...

So he managed to drive away a customer and make active duty personnel look like tools all in a single action.  The man is multi-talented.*

*But not in a good way.

Hey no hard feelings, I was a little out of it too...

I myself must admit, I have been contemplating a direct commission or ocs lately. Who knows, I might go over to the dark side too.

whats your mos?

only reason i ended up in rotc is because my dad was was an E8 and and he didn't want me to enlist...and every day of my life i wish i had.

edit- not to say i wouldn't go to ocs or something later on, but i would've preferred having experience of some kind before jumping in to being a dumbass butter bar

Merc - Everyone gets it at some point from someone.  I'm enlisted Army, and an 11B (infantry) is going to talk to me like I have no clue even after a year in Iraq.

But if someone in the Navy says something like that to you, just take a second to remind him he's in the NAVY!  Air force see's more gunfire and mortar rounds than the majority of enlisted seamen (excluding SEALS and SWCC and such).

19D and 52D(never actually used this one), probably adding 92F this summer.

There is a steep learning curve for some kid fresh out of college to have that kind of responsibility. A lot of times they don't see how bad they are neglecting their troops. Being enlisted helps with this a lot.

A good butter bar listens to and asks his senior enlisted troops for advice.

19D is some badass stuff, heard good stories about scouts.

i agree with going to SNCOs, but even still like i said...we got seniors who would be dumb enough to go ask for batteries for their chem lights. and in may they will be 2LTs

well common sense dictates who you should take seriously.
Long story short, If you have it you'll be a fine officer, if you don't you will constantly be searching for chem light batteries, or what manual contains the procedure for replacing a muffler belt, who you need to bring your exhaust sample to for testing, ect...

I see you quoting the chem lights alot, but just so you know, there are chem lights that take batteries and they are tracked by FEDLOG as well.  I can get the NSN or Part # on them if you want to punk someone.

Pick a shoulder-launched weapon; at AT4,or a recoilless rifle or something. Send someone to get a blank firing adapter for it.

Bonus points if the quartermaster gives him the lid of a jerrycan and sends him back to you with it.
