Honestly why spend the money on a scooter. They are VERY VERY limited in use. Most of the 50cc models only do about 35-50mph tops and really look dorky ridden by a dude. There is a grandma aged white haired woman that i see rolling around my area sometimes, and she has a pink scooter with a matching pink jumpsuit and helmet. She constantly lays on the horn too! she's a wild one  -------------

This isn't to buy, I wouldn't put that kind of money into it. I wanted to rock one in Europe at least once but the gf is a spaz on anything with 2 wheels and wasn't feeling it, so it didn't happen. Now we're going to Victoria at some point this summer and I just had some friends there that rode around on those, and they were quite cheap, so I'm considering it. They also have dirtbikes and more, but I believe you have to be licensed:

Scooters are awesome. My brother used one because he went to UCSC, where all the class are spread throught different "colleges" on campus. Costs about 8 bucks to fill up too.

They really are genius for having around campus. All of the athletes here ride them. i say yay. They are a great way to get around town. |

They still offer NO benifit over small CC real bikes. AS for the license thing. I dont know bout anywere else but here you need motorcycle license for anything over 50cc and event he 50cc have their own license needed. If its for the auto deal well you really should learn to shift cause its really easy and save a TON of maintence. The V-Belts and Variators of the CVT are REG wear items lasting at most 20,000kms. A bikes cluch is pretty much the only wear item and the one on my old bike is still good with 60,000kms. I ride a Yamaha 1100 V-Star. I commute on the bike as well as take trips and cruise around. So far its netting me an average of 49mpg. But if i were to get a strictly commuter bike id probly opt for a Yamaha WR250X. That bike get 80mpg is very low maintence. | If you can drive a standard car, but not shift on a bike, something is wrong with you. I found shifting easy as pie, maxed my friends little bike out first time on it no problem. Only got up to 50 MPH (80 kmph) but it was still a blast. UGH I wish I could afford one. |

My class in school was greatly responsible for these getting yanked from PE classes. At 7 years old we'd run as fast as we could, then hit the ground with these held to our chests....usually aiming at unsuspecting classmates. ------------- ? |

^^ We played Star Wars on those things, they were our space fighters. It was like dodgeball on scooters with random mats set up vertically as stars and asteroids and whatnot. Good times.

Scooters are fun, cheap on gas and easy to find somewhere to park it. Just make sure you wear your short shorts and bare middrift tee with it.

If I could use a vehicle with the performance characteristics of a scooter, I would get an electric scooter. There are several on the market. Not terribly expensive, perform about the same as gas scooters, but so much cheaper/cleaner/quieter to operate. If I had a short low-speed commute it would be a no-brainer.
And the electric motorbikes are getting better too...

Maybe so for me but my mothers commute is only 8kms into work on roads never excceding 50km/hr all in the city. She has the perfect commute for scooter use. But even she wont trade her motorcycle for a scooter for commuting duty, as her bike is superior in every way. She rides a small engined motorcycle, a Yamaha V-Star 650cc Classic The bike gets 60mpg in commuting use and requiers very little maintence, nothing but oil and filters 2-3tims a year along with a valve adj wich i do. Bike has 60,000kms on the clock (It was my bike originally so alot of that milage was on longer trips i traded up and gave the bike to her to replace her old bike). Lets see a scooter pull that off for the same price. And on the ++ side she can hop on that bike and ride ANYWERE she aint RESTRICTED to the city's low speed limits like you are on a Scooter. That bikes done everything from off road rideing (when it was mine i got a bit adventurous) Touring, weekend blasts and commuting both for my 30km farm land commute and now my mothers 8km city commute. Honestly i got nothing against scooters some like em and if i took a euro trip hell i might even rent one to get around on if a Bike was not available but seriously a Scooter is inferioir in EVERY WAY to a real bike. IN most cases FAR worse brakes, WAY underpowered, horid handeling (the small wheels offer very little stability), and very little in the way of longevity as you are ALWAYS running em Wide open witch quickly takes its toll on those little engeins. You got to understand some lawn mowers have a bigger engine than those 50cc scooters and in some cases make more power too. Scooters CVT transmishions are also horribly inefficient unlike the much simpler and stronger manule trasnmishions of most bikes. About the only 50cc scooters that can move decently are the Two Stroke models and they are FAR worse for the enviroment then that of even a MUCH larger motorcycle. Idealy for a commuter bike in the city id probly get a small 200cc or so duel sport bike. here in milwaukee, 49cc bikes are legally allowed to be parked at bike racks. that right there is enough for me to want one so i never have to park in this damn city. |

Here in Toronto you can park any motorcycle on the side walk legally.
