I know...lots of these threads...

My jeep got totaled this past weekend, so now I need a new car (not by me!).  I'd really prefer a sedan sized car, and having a nice interior is a necessity as most of my driving is for many hours at a time.  I'm thinking about 15k tops, used would probably be best.  I won't be able to afford what I want, so I'd like a newer model so I could trade it in once I graduate and can afford a nice car.

I'm currently looking in to the VW Passat, VW Jetta, and Mazda 3.  I like all three, have ridden in all 3, but have only driven a Jetta shortly.  Thus test driving all will be a must.  I'm currently leaning towards the Passat, as I've found a 2008 with under 30k miles for just under $15k.  It is a 4 cylinder, 6 speed, turbo.

I'm still open for any suggestions.

*  I'd really like a TDI Jetta, but there is no way I could afford it, so forget it.  Unhappy

I've never been impressed with Toyotas beyond the Celica.  Same for Honda.

My favorite car I've ever driven was  BMW 3 series, 2.5L engine.  Of the other cars I've driven, the VW is the closest to the performance of the BMW.

Do not get a Jetta. You'll spend more than the car is worth once the warranty runs out. Mazda 3 is a very good car, but for about the same price(depending on how far you want to drive) you can get an 08 subaru impreza hatch for around 15k. AWD > FWD

Mazda 3 is great for gas mileage, and repairs are cheap.  I only buy Mazdas, its a personal preference, but I find them to be pretty reliable into high miles.
VWs can be sweet, but can also be picky and expensive to repair.
Go with what feels right.

QFT. Mind you, the 3 will get more mpg than the Impreza.

Not a bad car for the price. The new 4 door hatch model is pretty sweet(same body as the 2 door, but the back seats are easier to get to. Plus somewhere around 40ish mpg, can't be beat unless you want to spend and extra 8k for a prius or insight.

Very wrong.  My car was wrecked on the interstate, single car wreck.  The BACK of it was destroyed.  How in the world does THAT happen?  Hydroplaned, spun backwards and slammed into a concrete median.  Safety is very important.  Smile

A wannabe pilot was driving in an unsafe manner is my guess.

Why not get another jeep?

You could get like an '04 325xi with like 50k for 14-15 grand. I was looking for something around the same price and you could get a freshh used bmw for pretty cheap.

I'd get a Acura 3.2 tl.

I have driven tons of BMW's, just getting the oil changed on a 330 is insane, tire wear will kill you too... On the acura, you don't even have to jack the car up, it is on the side easy to reach.

Very fun to drive, and you could probably get an 04  (3rd generation) for that money. They are super fun to drive, and I have a ton of miles on mine with no issues. Plus good mileage, and very safe.

True, and men did have more accidents a while ago, but that has since reversed. Women ARE the worse drivers, with more accidents, but we still pay more. You also pay more if your car even resembles the colour red, has 2 doors instead of 4, etc. Just stupid.

I could see that. There was this guy in my class that brags 24/7 about his '94 Camaro and how big the engine is and how fast it was and stuff like that. I could picture him getting in a car wreck or being pulled over.

A girl rolled my friends car 2 years ago. She sucked at life and flipped it on a gravel road, so the hood and roof is dented up, with scratches all over the thing. Front left quarter panel had to be replaced, and the front bumper.

yeah, because supercharging a FWD car makes so much sense.

but hey, who needs tires? or the extra power you would get with a turbo because its more efficient. or the better gas milage.

it's because girls are "more" cautious drivers and are more book smart about the road. boys just know how to drive and have a tendency to show-off more in front of their friends... then do stupid stuff that causes them to damamge something.

and yay. i knew that i liked the yaris for some reason. and it's cute.

When you say "more" cautious you mean... putting on makeup at red lights and texting while driving? Is that what you mean?

that has nothing to do with being cautious, and both genders text while drive

My friends' 2-door Honda Civic EX (or whatever the crappiest model is) is considered a sports car by his insurance.

I laugh at him a lot.

Someone spotted a woman in Vancouver french braiding her own hair while swerving all over her lane. That's just idiocy regardless of gender.

However, the more cautious thing isn't really a good thing, because it's not cautious. It's hesitation, and thats when cars stop in intersections, stop at green lights, wait for pedestrians to cross that aren't crossing, etc.
Its the people who freeze up, instead of reacting and dealing with the situation that are equally scary.

While the rolls have reversed in overall accidents, Men are still 3x more likely to be involved in an accident that results in death (for themselves or for another) which is why the rates are still higher for men. Also, the disparity is virtually nil between male and female drivers in total accidents:
Originally posted by Johns Hopkins University Study Johns Hopkins University Study wrote:

Although men are three times more likely than women to be killed in
car crashes, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine and
Public Health have found that, when the total numbers of crashes are
considered, female drivers are involved in slightly more crashes than
men. Overall, men were involved in 5.1 crashes per million miles
driven compared to 5.7 crashes for women, despite the fact that on
average they drove 74 percent more miles per year than did women.

The investigators, who published their results in the July issue of
Epidemiology, found that although teenage boys started off badly, with
about 20 percent more crashes per mile driven than teenage girls,
males and females between ages 20 and 35 were equally at risk of being
involved in a crash, and after age 35 female drivers were at greater
risk of a crash than their male counterparts.

So, in short, the research says that men are more likely to kill behind the wheel, teens have worse driving records with male teens being far worse than female teens, and that only when over the age of 35 does the risk of female drivers having more accidents become a reality. What's more expensive to pay out? The cost of a few fender-benders, or the cost of a total loss + medical + personal property + death benefit + any costs of the resulting civil suit and damages?

This is why women have lower rates.
