I am relatively new to paintball and I have always used a 98 custom when I rented from fields so I figured it is time to buy one.

I bought this Tippmann 98 custom platinum with anti chop technology and I have been modifying it for the past week. There is a vast improvement in the feel of the gun since day one. The response trigger is awesome and it works great with the double trigger kit. The fore grip is also great because it really helped to change the balance of the gun while also giving me more of a hand hold.

Parts installed:

Tippmann double trigger kit
Tippmann response trigger kit
Dead on aluminum fore grip

Parts in transit to my house:

16" smart parts linear barrel in dust black
Pure energy 20oz co2 tank
Trinity ASA adapter with gauge
Tippmann custom pro drop forward
Dead on rocket cock 2
JCS black point rear velocity adjuster
Smart parts pro touch .45 grip Black

looks good, check out the cyclone feeder instead of an electric one as another option, and another barrel besides the linear, lapco maybe.

The cyclone feed is a good system. I might have to look into that a little more. I just wasn't sure how it compares dollar for dollar to electric hoppers.

I've heard good things about the smart parts linear barrels and I didn't want to spend big $$ on a barrel right off the bat. If I upgrade again I will most likely get a flatline.

Sounds like a good plan, however I would have recommended going with a 12-14" JJ Ceramic. Nice start though.

Keep the stock powertube and bolt. No reason to change them. I have/had a SP progressive barrel and I liked it as well. Only thing about the J&J that I prefered a bit was the ability to shoot through paint breaks. It seemed better at self cleaning. Cylclones are nice and have a nice low profile if you use an X7 hopper, but with an electric, you do have the option of using it on another marker if you decide to change/upgrade. As for the feed elbow, I have not had one break yet. If you are concerned buy a couple of extras, they are only a couple of dollars.

Thanks for the responses guys. You are helping me a lot.

I want to get the upgraded x7 system. If I buy a complete kit for the a5 will it bolt right onto my 98c? Tippmannparts.com has an x7 cyclone feed system listed for the 98 that's selling for $83. I sent them an email asking what it included in the kit.

I guess the other option would be to buy the regular 98c cyclone system but then I will have to upgrade all the parts to x7 or better for a lot more money in the long run. The 98c with upgraded x7 parts is going to cost me almost $130 and I won't be using many of the stock parts at all.

Any suggestions or links to what I need to buy would be greatly appreciated.

The A-5 kit will not bolt onto your 98. You would need the 98 adapter for the cyclone.

IMO I would stay with the 98 cyclone setup. It's good up to 15 BPS. As far as I know the
only difference is the  X7 cyclone has a vented piston housing. Unless it's changed since mine.

You have a solid setup there, have fun with it. Thumbs Up

Cool man. I will buy it as the next upgrade then. Tippmannparts.com sells a cyclone kit that comes with all the upgraded x7 stuff so I will most likely be buying that.

The gun is looking awesome! I'll have to wait until there is sunlight to shoot it.
