MacBook Pro today. 2.53 GHZ 13 inch. First thoughts: I love it.
Haven't been on a Mac since my eMac and I'm new to this OS. Think I was on Tiger before.
It came with a free iPod Touch which was cool. I got a lock and iWork as well as the Apple Care Protection Plan.
Was wondering what the more popular apps were for OS X?
Also, those with iPod Touches, how do you like them? I'm 50/50 on keeping it or selling it.
Thanks

I love my iPod touch! I use it for pretty much all my Internet needs. The only that I use my laptop for, so far, is Hulu. Everything else I use the touch for.
How much did that cost?

the free ipod touch? that come included with the extra $1k?
joking aside, hope you like it, now listen to some indie music, drink expensive coffee, and sketch something.

It's nice not having to install any virus software.

I am considering the 13inch macbook pro. I am just wondering how is the screen size. Is it worth it? I would like the confidence it won't crap out on me due to viruses. My friend has the 17inch? and it is amazing. I love it and the light up keyboard is a nice feature. Is the computing power there?

Because that's the work of Nobel Laureates right there . . . .
But congrats on your purchase, the new macbook pros are pretty nice. If they had updated their graphics cards when I bought mine I might have bought one. As far as I can see, they're the only ones offering dedicated graphics on a < 15in laptop.
Its a shame they dropped the price on the touch though, IIRC when I was browsing for laptops last year, they managed to almost make up the price difference between an equally spec'd PC and its macbook counterpart.

I have the 13.3 macbook (not pro) and it's not really that small.
As for computing power...the new pro's are like 2.5ghz, which is really good for a laptop.

Awesome to hear, good choice. Hit me up on aim at zephyr92m if you have questions about stuff I'll gladly help. I'm not on now (at work) but I usually am afterwards.
For chatting you will want Adium, for IRC (if you want) you'll want X-Chat Aqua. I use Safari as my main browser now sadly. I used Camino (mozilla based) for a long time, but I finally just got fed up with it (being slow, weird tendancies, didn't support some things) and Firefox 3.5.0 is terrible for os x. I haven't tried 3.5.1 yet, it could be better....
Lets see.... if you need to FTP anything (school projects to your webspace, etc) I would recommend transmit. It's quick, stable, really really straightforward, and easy to do favourites and junk.
For torrents, Transmission is the way to go IMO.
Get a program called "smc fan control" it lets you control how fast your fans spin, and trust me on a macbook pro you want to be able to do so, they get HOT.
I have another program called "SMART status report" and it just adds a tiny green dot to my menu bar to monitor my hard drive health. If anything seems off the colour will change red so I can repair/ backup.
Which reminds me, Time Machine is sweet. You may not want or need it, but if you do I recommend it.
Uhhhh what else....Growl is a handy notification program, and it works with just about every application out there. For cd burning I'd say just use iTunes, but if you're burning .avi's or data cd's etc, I recommend Disco. Really lightweight and handy program. Drag, drop, title, done.
Oh since I know you have a 360 and the internet, I suggest you get "Connect 360"
It lets you stream media over your home network to your 360, so you can listen to your music/ watch movies without moving a thing. I've had a couple issues with it not loading/ playing sometimes, but hey its free so I don't care. If it doesn't work I just use a thumbdrive in the front of the 360.
Anyways I think thats all I can think of riiight now, but if I have more or you have questions I'll post more here.

Does the SMC Fan Control run in the background? When I doubled clicked it it did nothing. I've got Skype, Mozilla, X-Chat Aqua (What server are you guys on right now?), and so far I've been using iChat. On my eMac I was using adium and I don't really notice any real difference.
How do you recommend transferring the music from my PC to my Mac?
Edit: I figured out SMC, what do you keep your fan at?

I am not sure a 13 foot computer still counts as a latptop.

I let them idle around 2000 which is normal usually. However it's hot as heck in my apartment lately so I've been running them at 6000 when I turn it on (trying to leave it off to create less heat in the place) and yeah, just runs up in the tool bar.
Also, there are millions of differences between ichat and adium. I love iChat, the screensharing, video chat, document sharing etc stuff is absolutely amazing, and ridiculously useful on group projects/ problem solving/ showing stuff off. However, adium allows multiple accounts, and is customizable COMPLETELY. Make it look pretty much any way you want, and you can add plugins, etc. I have one like /music for mine.
Also, we're on irc.esper.net

I take it the higher RPM drains the battery as it goes up.

Well yeah, anything using more power = battery draining. Same with leaving your bluetooth on etc when its not in use. I just started using MobileMe when I bought the iPhone, and so far I like it. I'm pretty much only using it for contacts at the moment, so I'm not sure if I will continue using it after my subscription is up, but if you have multiple macs I would suggest it, as it will keep your data consistant across each one.

Thinking about getting a Pro. I can get one for 25 percent off, which is pretty enticing.
The only problem is that I feel guilty buying a new laptop when my old Macbook is for all intensive purposes doing just fine. I've had no problems with the software at all. It runs like a champ.

Are they doing printer discounts with the macbook pro. I could use a printer a lot more than an iPod touch.

try to score another %25 off, and it might cost as much as a normal lap top
its making me sad people are ignoring my trolling.
