Wolf spiders can and do use their drag line to evade predators. Sure, they don't hang in waiting to catch prey, but chances are it was well aware of merc's presence given that wolf spiders have excellent eye sight. Also, if you notice the shape of the abdomen, it is very much like the carolina wolf spider's. Also, it appears that the chelicera are very pronounced meaning it would most likely be a hunting spider rather than an orb weaver. ------------- <Removed overly wide sig. Tsk, you know better.> |

I'm not inclined to believe that is a terrestrial spider. The legs give it away. That spider was built to hang in a web. It is very difficult to see the chelicerae in that photo. The angle doesn't let you see any large pronounced eyes either. Perhaps Merc can give us some more information as to how the spider was suspended. Was it a single dragline or more? -------------
