Trans Am. Mostly because they are sexy cars. but also the fact that its just as easy to drop a 350ci+ engine as the Monte Carlo and it weighs less.
edit: Im finally getting something new myself here in a few month. 2006 GTO. Imma die but oh well

How's the mileage and such?
I've always liked Trans Ams.

Mileage fo sho.
Eitherway, I still think the trans am is ugly.
I almost bought a newer GTO but the gas mileage would have killed me.

Terrible mileage? I'm talking about the transam and SS. They look like they're in good condition. Both the same price? We need more info, not just pics, haha.

thought you meant gas mileage. my bad. trans am has 98000 and its a manual transmission for $4000. monte mileage isnt known and is $2500, so it would need work

Heads up with the LT1: It has optispark ignition. Easiest way to describe it: The distributor is UNDER the water pump. (Its really not a distributor, but google it for a better explanation.) A small leak in your water pump, and your whole ignition system goes out. Then you have to replace the water pump gasket, the opti, and a few other parts. Its not a question of if it will happen, its when will it happen.
The Monte looks nice, but with unknown mileage, I'd stay away unless he can prove an engine rebuild. And, considering it is much older, you're going to deal with worn suspension parts (PITA to replace, just did most of the front suspension in my Camaro), Possible rusted brake lines, rotted fuel lines and the like.
I'd steer away from both. There has to be better deals than those out there.

family has had Z28 camaros with LT1 and havent had this problem. as for the monte, i dont think it was an engine rebuild, i think the odometer broke. i know the monte would require some upkeep. most cars that old do. ill probably steer away from the monte, since i dont have that much time to deal with the maintenance of an older car

increased insurance | This. You may want to call your insurance company and see exactly what it's going to cost you to insure either of these. I know when I was younger, I had to sell my Supra because it had a 6 cylinder engine and they wanted to charge me nearly $200/month just for liability. Not sure what things are like today, but it was definitely a deal buster for me.

HP to extra weight ratio nearly made it slower. And for the record it was a 79. Pretty car, but not exactly fast.

No offense, but late 70's F bodies weren't exactly fire breathing muscle cars by any stretch of the imagination either. All of the emissions and detuning made them pretty tame. I don't think the Z28's or Trans Ams were even breaking 200HP by then.

I think it's almost $500 a half insuring my explorer. The one with the High Performance engine was actually cheaper than the normal 4.0l because of it being auto compared to the 5speed I have now.

and its only $110 a month for full coverage on my tiburon. | Than we aren't exactly comparing apples to apples. The 79 Supra was more of a luxury version of the Celica than a sports car. The point being that if you have a "red flagged" vehicle it can cost you through the nose for insurance. In my situation, when I signed up for insurane, I put down that it was a Celica, which it technically was. At some point I was making a claim or switching something and while on the phone the adjuster asked me how many cylinders the car had. When I replied.. 6, she said, only the Supras have 6 cylinders, to which I replied, yeah, it's a Celica Supra. Kaaaching. Suddenly my insurance went from around $110/month to around $200/month because the "Supra" nameplate was red flagged as a sports car and thus nearly double the monthly cost to insure. I think I made one insurance payment and sold the car. Ironically, I replaced it with a 63 bug with a fairly 'built" 1776 motor that I subsequently tboned into a truck that pulled out in front of me going 60mph resulting in insurance payouts of about $400k..... shoulda let me keep the Supra.

I had two 78 camaro's One regular and one z-28 that I did a ton of engine and tranny work on.
Edelbrock high rise intake, with dual holly 400 carbs. Nitrous, headers, bored out, large cam, straight pipes, shift kit, stall converter. It was a fun car, looked like a beater, and would kill guys in their brand new 'mommy' mustangs. It only got about 8 mpg though...
