... could take Angus beef and make it taste like crap.

I thought I'd give one a try tonight after a long and arduous evening of making my own food (after cooking all day, you don't want to cook for yourself) and the mushroom-swiss 1/3rd pound Angus burger sounded like it might be worth a try.

Now, I use Certified Angus Beef for my burgers at the restaurant. A simple 80/20 mixture rate (80% lean 20% fat) which is what most restaurants use. It gets a good sprinkling of kosher salt and black pepper and a slice of Dubliner Cheddar, lettuce and tomato, and that's that. Nothing fancy, just Angus beef which is generally pretty good tasting.

This abomination from McD's was nowhere near what we sell hundreds of a week at my restaurant. Somehow, the boys at the lab there at McD's headquarters figured out how to take good beef and make it taste like cardboard. Honestly, beef to beef comparison, the thin little slabs of unidentifiable meat that go into the dollar double cheese burger taste EXACTLY THE SAME as the big hunk of crap in between the buns of the Angus burger.

I wish 5 Guys stayed open later than 10 sometimes....

Blasphemy!

I tried it last week and it was one of the most delicious burgers I've had, especially from McDonald's.  Maybe your local franchise just sucks at making them.

Were you sober? If so I may have identified your problem.

Also, get your lazy ass back in the kitchen and nuke a tv dinner.

5 guys is a quality fast food burger. I've only had it once and it was awesome.

That's why I go for the "Little" burgers. Instead of a double, they give you a single with the same amount of toppings for half the price. It's the fries that rack up the bill if you ask me.

And whoever said that the McD's Angus is a "quality burger." You've obviously never had a quality burger in your life. Your local franchise can't "suck" at making them since McD's doesn't even cook burgers in house anymore. They're cooked at the central commissary and then shipped to the stores where they're warmed back up.

I still miss Carl Jr's, better of all the bads presented, Micky D's whatever tastes like crap. Runza from out NE way hand packs the patties as needed, tastes a little better than frozen patties. And since I have picked up IBP meat loads out of Lexington, NE for the major fast food burger chains, you all don't really want to know. The QC for each chain is a differant as are the mixture requirements, and one "tour" of the floor was enough. Pure beef just means than any meat product in the burger is from a cow, the fillers can be whatever.

While trucking I used to look for the little mom and pop diners, and get burgers there, the chains were just as stated "fast" food so I could keep movin. That speciality burger joint "cheeseburger" something, that I found here and there in the mid-west was not that bad.

I tried their angus burger a week after it came out and it was truly disgusting.

Love their single cheeseburgers though. Even the double cheeseburgers are the same price, I always get the singles. On a drunken rampage night, I could down 5 of them in minutes.

I think all fast food depends on which restaurant you get it from, some people are lazy and just slap it on like its trash and others actually put effort into making it look half-good.

I had it, it was gross. Will never have one again. It is exactly like the smaller burgs, only thicker and more of a cardboard taste. I found the buns seem like they havent been totally baked through aswell.

Looking good is not the same as tasting good.

Wendy's for me. Hardee's, too, but the only one even close to me closed (isn't Hardee's the same as Carl Jr's?)

I've always been curious about how everyone knows what cardboard tastes like. Also never understood why people waste the time complaining about the quality of McDonalds food.

I miss Hardee's. When there was one down the street all I ever went there for was breakfast with my grandmother. I've never had one of their burgers.

Tallen, I concur 100% on this one. I also decided to make the mushroom swiss my choice when I decided to try the new burgers. It was a travesty. I think it had 4 pounds of mayo on it, and calling it 'cardboard' would have been an insult to our brothers in corrugated industry. I'll eat Mickie D's in a pinch, and I don't mind the taste of some of the stuff, but I will never make the mistake of eating that crap again.

Anyway, there's a drive-in around here called Swenson's and they have the best burgers I've ever tasted.

"Nifty Fifty's", mom and pop in Nebraska, fresh ground beef hand formed (raised ridge grill fried, not flat grease factory), home made buns (in house bakery), red onions, spicey brown mustard, ketchup, fresh hamburger dills, whole potato fries, whole milk and real ice cream shakes, with a lettuce leaf, a look back into times past before "fast food". I miss this kind of burger. Featured on "Diners' Drive-ins, and Dives" food networks look into this world of specialty burgers and road food.

Yeah, I was going to comment on this too, but forgot.
One of my favorite fast food treats is a nice classic double from Wendys.....

FYI though, their latest, the boneless wings.....not worth it. You get like 4 of them and they're just crunchier nuggets with sauce on them.

I LOVE burgers.  I would guess that aside from a few here, I've aten more burgers than anyone, and I have honed my own home-made home-ground sirloin burger to an art where I have yet to eat anything close to it, except for a BC burger in Vancouver at White Spot.  I tried White Castle and probably 6-7 different places when we were in New York..good but the White Spot burger still reigns (aside from my own).  McDonalds burgers - and I'm a double quarter pounder with cheese fan - are probably ones that are the worst of the bunch for quality of meat and freshness.  I'll order it without pickles or something so that I get a fresh one, but still, I'd rather have DQ or A&W, and it's probably been over half a year since I've aten there thanks to whoever here posted the gross pic of mcnuggets.

As for Wendy's; the Baconator rules.

Lol.

My campus has a 24/7 Subway. 300 feet from my dorm room.

I've already had too many late night drunken subs to count. It's kind of ridiculous actually.

Subway used to be half way decent, now it is almost "hold the meat" heavy on the sandwhich "filler". Even thier "new" tuna mixture can take moderately bad and turn it to awefull. Blimpy, and Quiznos, not much better, Jimmie Johns does have some potential, but nothing beats a good NYC deli for a "sub".

BK also used to be good, then they switched to that health friendly "alestra" based cooking oil for fries and the base for thier sauces. Causes per the FDA- gastronomical distress(see diarhia) in some, and I fall in the some catagory. I get a Whopper now and then sans sauce, Runza fries, and an Arby's Jamocha shake, all right next to each other on the strip.

Rally's Fries > Any Fries

I didn't think the Angus burger was anything special either. Would much prefer a Whopper, or better yet, a real burger on the grill.

As far as subs go (Non-Publix subs), I've found it hard to beat Jimmy Johns.
