I went home for the weekend and came back today to find that my room door had been kicked in and all my stuff had been stolen. That was an amazing welcome home. My TV, Xbox, surround sound and all of my Polo clothes (basically all of my clothes) had been stolen.
My roommate straight up said that he figures it was someone he knows though. Luckily right when I moved in and saw that I had a roommate of a specific ethnicity I got renters insurance and apparently that was a good thing to do.
On another note, I'm definitely getting a handgun now. Any suggestions?

Yeah a handgun would have solved this for sure.

Also, then your gun would have been stolen.

No it would not have. But, before this situation I was of the mindset, as are most people "oh, that kind of thing, and other similar bad things will never happen to me." This has clearly snapped me out of such a naive view of life. No, I will probably not get robbed again soon, if ever. No, I will probably never need to use the gun. However, stuff apparently does happen, and because of that fact it is not a bad idea to be protected.

True. Perhaps I should have said when I saw he was a "gangsta", as are all of his friends. I figured that everyone knew I was not racist at all though which is why I just say what I said. Hell, my only serious relationship was with a black chick and my Big Brother in my fraternity (who I choose) is a black guy.

I don't think having a gun is a bad idea given the door kicking nature of this breaking and entry. A gun would NOT have prevented the robbery, but i don't think the OP ever said it would.
Bad things happen. Generally they do happen to other people, but that is no reason not to be prepared. You are always someone else's "other people".
I'm real sorry crime has intruded in your life, it is always sucky to have to lay aside your innocent notions. And it is horrible to have to replace your stuff.
I know it is a bit of an outlay when you will probably be short of cash, but get a gunsafe. It doesn't have to be a big one, or a fancy one, but one to lock things up when you have to. (i also suggest finding the size you want and then getting a bigger one. You'll find other stuff to put in it. Trust me on that)
Quite often in cases like this you can expect to get robbed again. They generally wait for you to buy all new stuff then swipe that as well. If you can, get a security gate installed. Or a solid core door with some decent (read mean ass big) locks. If you renting the land lord should put them in.
And if you DO get a gun, get training with it as well. Not only HOW but also WHEN to use it.

I personally would suggest the Stoeger Cougar .40 or 9mm, you can pick one up brand new for around 400$ do a little research and you will quickly see it's a well built self defense pistol, for a great price.
Considered one of the best "Bang for you Buck" medium size pistols out there.

I can vouch for Hysteria's racial tolerance. Sorry your stuff was stolen, man. I know how that feels.
Also, I just can't help but ask, have you brought this up with the people you hit up for a new roommate? And was any of your roomy's stuff taken?

The gun wouldn't have prevented the robbery, but It deffinatly would have if he was there when it happened.
And I'm thinken it wasnt a random inccident, if your roomie thinks it was one of his friends and it just so happened when you were gone for the weekend, that narrows the selection.

It's a setup. Your roomate told his G friends that you were out of town. He set it all up. The door was a necessry casualty.

Yeah, my stepfather called them while I was in class today and they were extremely apologetic that this happened and all that good stuff. They even gave me a new roommate. I haven't met him, but we went into the apartment and it was incredibly tidy and clean. He's in the military too so that's usually a good sign.
My roommate did get stuff stolen, but he really didn't have anything. They just got a standard definition TV and some clothes from him.
Also I called USAA and filed a claim and they said that unless I have receipts I will get less for my stuff. I bought all of this stuff years ago. Who keeps receipts that long? They wanted me to tell them exactly how many polos I had stolen as well. Again, who knows exactly how many shirts they have?

Yeah, just make up a reasonable number, and ask friends for receipts, if they recently bought something that you got stolen, use theirs. lol

I have USAA too. They are usually very helpful if you take the time to do it right.
First off, take pictures of your stuff. (too late now) but look at the pics you have, you might be surprised what you do have if you take pictures around your room and the stuff is in the background.
Second, get REPLACEMENT value insurance, costs a tiny bit more, and will give you replacement money instead of devalued by the age.
Third, assuming you live in an apartment/condo/school housing. Install a dummy camera outside your door, the flashing red light will scare off most drug fiends and cut down on your loss. Also, you can get a little door alarm that you have to enter a code in it as soon as you open the door else it sets off a piercing siren. Buy one.

Done it.
I was actually robbed of stuff, but kind of just added stuff so I would get enough money back to replace my stuff that was gone.

what state are you in?
are you looking for carry or just home defense?
+1 on the training and get a quick access safe and bolt it to something. (like the wall studs)
i would say for home defense a full sized .45, for carry a .45 or .40 sub comp or a 357 revolver
sig, HK, springfield, glock, smith & wesson, maybe an FN. cant go wrong with a quality 1911...
just make sure the pistol fits you.
