If you're going to look at people who gave up during WW2, I suggest you investigate the Dutch.

Adolf Eichmann had a comment about how much he admired their system for rounding up Jews.  This was done by the Dutch police.  Alternatively, you could look up Dien Bien Phu.  I strongly question whether you would or could do what thousands of French soldiers have.
