For $25? Where?

I was planning on getting the $30 upgrade to professional for students.  Probably not gonna do it anytime too soon though.

Had the RTM for about 2 weeks. I love it. No problems whatsoever. Microsoft definitely got this one right.

Ordered my copy last week (also for the student price) and it's available for DL now. I'm hesitant to install it on my laptop or desktop though because if I run into issues with any of my applications, that will likely cause me to fail a class and I can't have that. I'm dying to try it out though so I'll probably roll the dice and see what happens. Hopefully XP mode works as advertised just in case. I got 64-bit Pro specifically for that feature and because it was the same price as the lower editions when buying as a student. Pretty shweet deal if you ask me. I'm expecting great things.

From my experience with the RC, problems with XP-compatible programs are few and far between.  The only one I had trouble with was Diablo II, and installing the newest patch fixed it.

I'm using same RTM, whatever that means. Either way so far so good, much better than XP or Vista.

RTM = Release To Manufacturer

RTM is the release version. Microsoft sends RTM out to their partners before they actually press the CDs.

So it's the gold master, I get it.

Posted By: Shub
Date Posted: 22 October 2009 at 5:46pm
Yeah, exactly. Since Microsoft often distributes betas and RCs (release candidates) throughout the development cycle of their products, they use the "RTM" moniker to differentiate that the copy they are distributing is the final release, the same copy that will be sent to CDs.

Yeah I follow that, I've just always heard the term gold master because of friends in the gaming industry. Same thing, different name

Posted By: Shub
Date Posted: 22 October 2009 at 8:27pm
Yeah, it's a terminology thing. Microsoft seems to use the term gold standard when they are talking about printing Windows CDs, but when they are discussing the actual software, its RTM.

I'm going to a Microsoft press conference in November at which I'll be picking up a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit for free.

Now I'm debating whether or not to do a full clean install or just upgrade.

I could do the whole virtualization thing but I'm too lazy to set that up and it's always much nicer when your primary OS just does it all without the need for extra stuff. If I had to though, I could make it work. I just don't want it to come to that Big smile

Dropping in another drive is an option. One that I would like too since my movie/music collection is ever expanding. However, money is kind of tight and getting a new drive isn't really a necessity. Come Black Friday though, I'm going to be keeping my eyes peeled for a cheap NAS and hopefully grabbing a drive or two with it. Then I can get my media all in one place, accessible from any computer, and most of my data will no longer be bound to a specific computer. Ideally, I want a RAID 1 setup in the NAS so I have some protection from drive failure but obviously that adds to the cost. I've been eyeing the DLink NAS's on tigerdirect for about a month now but I'm fighting the urge until Black Friday. Having a NAS would be pretty damn sweet though for somebody like me who switches between two computers often and always has to transfer files from one place to the other for various reasons.

Hey guys, before I install too much, someone mentioned I should install the x86 version for compatability reasons, and because I had less than an hour to do it I just did. So should I re-install with x64. I'm assuming yes?

Yes.  It will just run 32-bit programs in 32-bit mode.

Running it now. I'll be honest i don't know enough about it to really notice much of a difference? It runs quicker, thats for sure. But other than that, eh?

Depends. If you have older hardware or programs that don't have any support for 64bit then they won't be compatible. That and you should make sure your processor supports it.

I have a 2.4GHz Macbook Pro from....2 years ago maybe... Either way, I'm using it solely to use Steam, Battlefield 2, Combat Arms, etc. It's PURELY for gaming.

Then you'll also have to make sure the games are 64bit compatible to. A quick Google should answer all your questions.

I always recommend a clean install. Eliminate unnecessary cruft on the hard drive, and a good opportunity to not reinstall old programs that you no longer use.

You should be able to install the x64 version without trouble. It's worth the try.

If you're worried about stuff breaking, run the windows 7 upgrade advisor program that microsoft released. You run that and it will check your system to see if you'll have any hardware or software issues after upgrading. Of course, it likely won't be 100% accurate but it at least gives you an indication if your system will be completely gimped by it or if things may not work fully. You'll probably be fine but it won't hurt to run the advisor app anyway.

For $25!?

I haven't yet, but I'd like to when I buy a new computer here soon.  Any idea on how it is?

I mainly would just like everything to install correctly.  Don't want my $2000 software to not install and have to kill some babies.

Yes, the insanely low price is correct. I nearly pooped when I saw it too and wouldn't have believed it if it wasn't through Microsoft itself. Once I found out it was legit, I jumped on the offer. Can't beat a brand new OS that's actually an improvement over the last 2 generations for such a low price. I can download it whenever I want but I don't currently have the time to do the install since it requires reinstalling and configuring a whole bunch of crap again. That's if I put it on my desktop. If I put it on my laptop, it's even more of a pain because I have even more programs to deal with and I do all my schoolwork on it. Having my laptop down for the better part of a day would be terrible.

Anybody know how many computers the license allows you to install on? I think the retail version allowed like 2 or 3 and OEM only 1 or something like that. I definitely want 7 on both my systems, especially the laptop.

Also, your apps should work fine if they worked in Vista. If you get the edition with XP mode then that should cover your older XP apps as well, assuming it works as it should.
