Hi. My Tippmann 98 platinum is leaking from the connection between the air line and the valve. I've googled the problem, but all I find is people saying I should put teflon tape on the valve threads. There are no threads on the platinum so I'm guessing people are talking about an older system. What I find odd about the connection is that it's metal against metal. Apparently I just put the air line into the valve and tighten the bolt fastening it to the reciever, but without an o-ring in between I can't understand how it ever will be air tight. I don't remember if there used to be an o-ring there and that I've just lost it. The schematics in the manual is very confusing as well so I'm unable to tell if there should be an o-ring there or not. :) Basically it's the exact problem this guy had (http://www.tippmann.com/forum/wwf77a/forum_posts.asp?TID=182807) except I'm unable to fix it. TinMan says in that post to snug the hose. I've tried that and it just makes the leak smaller. I probably could tighten it quite a bit more with brute force, but I'm guessing it's a reason why he emphasizes snug. :) Leak coming from this part: http://img35.yfrog.com/i/image082a.jpg/ (not my gun) Seeing as I don't see any way I can make the connection air tight the way it is now. What is the problem? Should there be an o-ring there or have I damaged the valve in some way? If so do I just buy a new valve? If I find a small o-ring and put in there it can't possibly make things worse can it? :) |

Here's an image of my air line and valve. I just don't understand how those two parts are able to create an air tight seal, but pparently they did until recently just recently. I can't really see the problem either. There's a few scratches on the valve, but I can't see how that will make it leak to such an extent. http://img98.imageshack.us/i/img0409j.jpg/">

Heh, I actually fixed it. :) I found some circular rubber on a screwdriver set I had and I cut off a piece of that and used as an o-ring. It fit snug and worked perfectly. http://img101.imageshack.us/i/img0410b.jpg/">  Edit: Or not. It was air tight for like 10 minutes then suddenly the air gushed out of it. My make shift o-ring didn't last very long. :) Ohh, well. If someone comes with any tips in this thread that will be greatly appreciated, but I'm calling it a night now and I will take it to my local paintball store tomorrow to see what they make of it. |

Line it up just like your first picture. snug the line up to the valve,
give it a wiggle, if it lossens up a bit, snug and repeat. Your trying
to make sure the seat is matching.
Once it's snug, tighten it. Gas it up, if it leaks tighten it some more.
Try not to pull on the wrench with 'stripping' force. Just very snug.

Thanks for the help. Guess I will try a few times more then if it's all trial and error. :) It's just weird that I've opened and closed the gun like 50 times and every time the air line has come out I've just put the it back into the valve, tightened it slightly with my fingers, and it's been completely air tight until now. I don't understand why Tippmann would swap out the old system for this new screw less design. Because the power tube isn't attached to the receiver my air line tends to push it out every time I open the gun because of the tension on the air line. If I've read it correctly with the old system the power tube was screwed to the receiver and the air line screwed to the power tube so there was no need to touch or worry about those parts at all unless something broke. |

I was just going to suggest exactly what Tinman did. Make sure its seating squarely, and not angled a hair. You could try the homemade-seal trick again if you could find something made of a better material. A plain-jane type of rubber wont work as a pressure seal with CO2, o-rings are made of pretty specialized formulas of rubber. Maybe just check the local hardware store, they usually have a drawer of various o-rings near the screws and bolts. As for the new system, theres really no need to mess with taking the gas line and valve out for 99% of the maintenance. I think I pulled mine out once when I first got the gun just to check it out, then put it back and never removed it again. -------------

I agree about not needing to take it out, but if I remove the top half of the gun the powertube will more often than not pop out by itself if I don't hold it in place with my hand. Either from the pressure of the bolt springs or the tension on the air line. And like you say, the power tube never has to come out during normal maintenance, so I think it could just as well have been screwed into the receiver or at least fastened in some way. Neither I nor my local paintball store had any luck getting it air tight yesterday. I wiggled and tightened the air line for hours, but it still leaked. The pressure in my tank even dropped below 300psi and it still leaked so I'm guessing it will leak a lot more with higher pressure in the tank. I have put the air line back into the valve numerous times when it has popped out and those times I just had to tighten it with my fingers for it to become air tight again so I have no clue what is wrong now. I will probably order up some replacement parts to see if that fixes the problem because I have no idea what I can do differently when fitting the air line. I did look around for some proper o-rings, but didn't find any of the right dimensions. |

Im guessing theres some kind of casting defect in the reciever half then. On mine, I can leave the valve in there and bang it on stuff and it wont budge. So its definately not normal for it to be trying to fall out of there.
