I went jumping yesterday to relieve the stresses of school and came up with a nice video for y'allz to enjoy. It was initially taken for a project, so I spent most of the time with the camera in my face, talking to it. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to use video for the presentation, so I cut out most of the scenes that don't have nice views.

A note on the song choice: This video doesn't feature the surrounding environment as much as it should. I'm saving my better music for better videos.

That looks fricking sweet, although i'd smack the teacher that said that it doesn't count. I mean you should at least make them pay for it.

Not literally of course.

No. I did what's called a high hop'n'pop. It's done when you want to practice canopy flying, canopy relative work, to test out a new parachute, or to test other equipment.

I did it to enjoy the view.

At our dropzone, it's $23 per jump ticket to 13,500 feet, $18 to 5,000 feet
Off the top of my head:

AFF (1st 7 jumps before solo) is about $1300.
Gear rental is $74 per day or $37 per jump on top of the ticket.
You need 25 total jumps before you can get an A-license, which allows you to jump with people who aren't coaches or instructors.

USPA membership is $65 for the first year, $55 for each year after. Required to maintain a license.
A-license application costs $20.
A packjob costs $6. The sooner you learn to pack, the better.

The costs add up quick, and there are probably a bunch I'm neglecting to mention.

I pay $21 per jump and $100 per semester for gear rental for being in the skydiving club at my school.

I was actually looking up how to get into BASE jumping earlier today. Turns out you need connections haha. Still something i want to do, as soon as i graduate and go through the skydiving cert's that are needed.

I went this summer, tandem, and it was so much fun. I want to solo though...

i was joking around...my tone tonight isn't all that jokingly i've been told. apparently i'm just a miserable piece of whatever, but jumping out of a plane is awesome hands down

Why would you jump out a of a perfectly good plane?

Seriously, planes are pretty hard to build.  I wouldn't just go around jumping out of them. Wink

From what I hear, skydiving planes are generally less than "perfectly good"

Who cares? You're wearing a 'chute aren't you?

The planes I work with almost daily are good at what they do. Getting from 0' AGL to Fl 115 and throwing out meat bombs.

You don't need much instrumentation for that.

It's also handy 'cos I get my jumps basically for free. What irks me though isn't restricted to the sky diving planes, but all of them. You work your butt off to accomodate their idiotic requests, moving things around the sky like a magician, and they get used to it. The one time out of 20 where you have to mess THEM around, and they get uppity.\

PS, wicked video. What did you use to film it? You location also looks great.

It's a point and shoot that I bought about a year ago. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. Bought it specifically because it shoots 720p video. The only thing I don't like about it is its proprietary battery and limit on video size (hi-def only allows 8m 27s of video before having to start a new file, there's no way to make it seamless)

Aas you can see, its image stabilization also isn't too hot. It didn't help that I had to hold it in a very awkward position throughout the jump. I don't really consider it secure, but I tied the wrist strap to my altimeter strap so that I couldn't loose it unless the strap broke.

My dad's in China right now. He's looking for a relatively cheap 1080p camera + fisheye lens for me. If that works out, hopefully I can bring you guys better footage in Spring. Until then, I plan on doing a few more of such jumps with my current camera. I'm considering doing a weekly comedy + opinion show or something. If it's good enough, the ad revenue could pay for my skydiving. I just have to make sure I can get jumps in when the weather is good.

I did all this for FREE. Airborne mass jumps are OK, but until you HALO life is not worth living. I am determined to go out the door one more time and knees to the breeze before I take the big dirt nap.

I just loved 'flying', Man can fly, we are gracefull and aerobatic, we just have to work on that landing thing.

I plan on doing it one day. There are a few ways of getting it done in the civilian world. The military wouldn't have me do it if I ever joined for the job I want (more on that in another thread).

Come to DeLand during the school year and I'll see if I can use my discount on a tandem for you. Unless you've got a license or something, then we could jump together.

Man, the sky was amazing for those jumps.

That last video was really good.

My friends are always trying to talk me into jumping out of a plane... But, I haven't yet.

One of my friends on his first jump had the instructor on his back and the instructor told him to hold his knees up on the landing...

But he was so syked up that he ended up running when he landed and jumping around all excited... Until he felt a tap on his shoulder and the instructor asking him to let him down (he is 6'7, and the guys feet wouldn't reach the ground).

They tremble at my name...

impulse: When you do eventually get the motivation to go, let me know so I can be there when your scared ass is moments from exiting the door.

FE and everybody else... just do it. It's nice to see that kind of sky in a plane or from a mountain, but just wait until you see it under canopy. As I said in one of my posts, I had life-shattering news that morning. It generally takes me a long time to put out any sort of smile on my best days. Skydiving has the ability to do what few other activities have ever been able to do to me, and that's to reliably make me feel joy.

That fact that you saw me smile like that after a day full of tears is enough to know that just one jump is worth it.

The one I was on crashed the next time it went up and killed all six people on board. It wasn't even "kinda good."

They weren't anywhere near jumping altitude when the engine started leaking oil so they decided to land, but it caught fire a few hundred feet from the ground and overwhelmed the pilot, sending them into the trees. The girl behind me in line to tandem jump died, as did my instructor, one of the guys I'd just gone up with who was two jumps shy of golden wings, and the pilot I'd had, plus two others.

The jump was great, fantastic really, but wow what timing I had.

There's nothing quite like seeing the world from that perspective without the frame of a window. It doesn't even feel like you're falling because you're at terminal velocity, and the ride down once the chute is out is amazingly peaceful. In a tandem jump you can speak in a normal voice and hear each other on the way down.
