So it's been a while since I made a new knife, and my old one has seen better days... I know the designs I want to use the only things I haven't been able to work out so far is the steel I'm going to use to make them. I'll probably be using two different steels because these knives are meant for two different purposes but this is why I'm coming to you people... The first will be mainly a throwing knife, because I like to pretend I'm a spec ops ninja born of Rambo. (aka, I get bored and its a fun hobby) It will have this design
The second knife is specifically for a camping trip my friends and I have planned for this spring. Where the only thing we get to bring with us, is we each get a knife. (and thats it.) I was thinking about using CPM T440V after reading about it, but I have yet to check into prices. Anyways... Design.
But yeah, I'm not all that familiar with all the different types of steels and which is best for what, so any of you have any particular recommendations?

There's a book called "The $50 Knife Shop" by Wayne Goddard. Check it out. Beautiful specimen, by the way.

| Okay, so I was referring to thinks like a tent and that jazz. Yes we will have matches, and food will be within hiking range if worst comes to worst, but I know the area that we are camping in pretty well, and food really shouldn't be a problem. We camp in the area semi-frequently and after our last trip (which consisted of a 3 day canoing trip in the middle of nowhere) we've kind of become bored with 'normal' camping and have decided to up the challenge

It's fun to make knives, and not too difficult if you have an old blade already lying around. Also, forget matches. Real men use flint & steel.

I've hammer forged a knife before too, with a dis-satisfactory end product, and because I suck at it, I'm sticking to my usual method.

I enjoy throwing knives and axes.
I hadn't done it since I was a kid, and stuck my first four tries from two revolutions out eyeballing it from memory.
It was cool.

I have seen some absolutely scary throwing of axes and even a couple machetes. Not exactly an effective weapon, especially since you now lose the one in your hand, but still cool.

the cold saw blade im using is some sort of HSS tool steel
i would check around local machine shops and see if they have any blades that have been sharpened to the point where they are to small... you can get a nice piece of 10-12" dia tool steel 1/8" thick for cheap/free
