Next time when you answer the door for them hit them with a proposition. Tell them you'll give their religion a shot if they will give yours a chance. Then identify yourself as a druid and invite them to join you bathing in the blood of a tree. They never returned after I did that.

Its happened in both of the last two cities I've lived in, Jacksonville and Atlanta.
They got smarter here, they send moderately attractive teenage girls around to convert everyone.... So you atleast give them a couple seconds to speak before shutting them down.

Correction: Mormon missionaries follow that rule. The church is against going door to door, and missionaries are only supposed to go when invited.
However, there are surely some nuts out there (missionary and non-missionary) who will ignore that and do it anyway. But unlike Jehovah's Witnesses, it isn't condoned by the church.

Alright let's get some things straight here.
Jehova's Witnesses =/= Mormons
Mormons DO go door to door as part of their mission. Hence the fact that they are usually post high-school kids who are doing their mission prior to either going to BYU (or another college) or going on to work in fields that don't require higher education. Proselytizing is a key function of mission companionships within the LDS faith. To quote
The most visible and most common type of missionaries are typically those who proselytize door-to-door and ride bicycles for transportation, but not all missionaries engage in these activities. Some seniors and young adults, who may have health problems or some type of physical or mental disabilities, are unable to serve proselytizing missions. They may be called as "service missionaries" to do genealogical research or act as tour guides or hosts at Temple Square or Family History libraries and other church sites. In many areas, even proselytizing missionaries spend most of their day responding to incoming phone calls and queries, delivering requested media from the church's television and radio commercials. Missionaries may use public transportation, walk, or in some areas drive automobiles owned by the church. |
So, Darur, if you're not a member of the LDS, you need to brush up on your LDS regs, if you are a member of the LDS, then you REALLY need to brush up on your regs.
That said, JW's are far more likely to leave you alone once you tell them you aren't interested than LDS missionaries are. They'll generally hand you a copy of the "Watchtower" and leave you be. Mormon missionaries aren't much worse, but I've had far more annoying "foot in the door" kinds of issues with male LDS missionaries than JW missionaries.
Furthermore, LDS missionaries are typically two males (although female "sisters" are becoming slightly more common) not from the same family while JW missionaries are generally husband and wife or related persons going door to door to spread their message. I think the reliance of the LDS on young men just out of high-school is one of the reasons they tend to get a bad rap of being annoying.
I've personally found that when dealing with JW missionaries, approaching the situation with a friendly demeanor and sense of goodwill will end the whole thing rather rapidly and cut down on repeat visits. My encounters are cut even shorter when I tell them that one of my best friends (who I dated for some time) is a JW and we talked extensively about our comparative beliefs. It goes a long way to learn a little bit about their beliefs to show them that you at least understand where they're coming from.
Personally, I try to be as nice as possible. After all, they're doing what they do because they believe it is their job according to the scripture to inform everyone they can of Christ's message however it is that they've interpreted it. At the end of Matthew, it is written,
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world |
So, understanding that they are doing what the bible is telling them to do, I am nice to them. How would you like it if you were yelled at, had dogs sic'ed on you, had guns shoved in your face, were spit on, or were otherwise treated with disrespect for doing what you felt was your christian duty often by other so-called "Christians"? Do unto others is what Jesus taught, they're just trying to spread the words of Christ (again, as they've interpreted it) and that's a lot more than most of us who call ourselves "Christian" can say of our own lot.
So, in short. Be nice to them, you don't have to engage them in long conversation, but be understanding, and it will go a long way to keep them out of your hair.
Also, Ceesman, you live in LI, it's your own damned fault. The JW's are based out of Brooklyn you know.....

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that getting a blood transfusion is a sin. They will remove you from the church if you get one, or if you allow a doctor to give one to a child, no matter the emergency or health condition.
They also practice a strict form of "shunning" members who have been deemed as not in-cahoots with the message, which has torn families apart.
Their own literature has written about the dangers of "independent thinking" away from the church leaders.
They get washed with a pleasant brush for some reason - probably because of the smiling people door to door - but Jehovah's Witnesses are a cult. A dangerous one at that.

So when I was in HS I had an issue with JWs showing up over the weekends trying to convert my family. Once I graduated HS I took a job at a pharmaceutical factory for the summer. In the middle of the summer the factory is shut down for a one week deep cleaining, aka, no germs allowed, bleach frenzy on every square inch of production space. During that time of scrubbing I met a mechanic who is a JW and we got to talking about his faith and what not and my lack of said faith. I asked how I could stop them from coming to try to convert me all the time and he informed me of the blacklist each church has. Apparently if you do something repulsive to the church they will put you on the do not bother list. Basically what HV said. My solution was pajama pants, a toilet paper tube down the pajama pants, a victoria's secret catalogue and a bottle of lotion on the table next to me when I answered the door. Problem solved.
Then two or three years down the line I started working at a home improvement store and got to know a female manager there pretty well. Her family was JW and she had a falling out with the church. She disagreed with them on pretty much everything from blood transfusion to how they treated outsiders as abominations. Her family situation was so bad that her parents refused to show up to their own daughters wedding, even the reception.
Their own daughter.
Then her younger sister got engaged and she was told that she would not be allowed to attend the ceremonies because she was no longer a member of the church and it would upset he elders. Talk about family values. Minor theological disagreement and you are cut off from your family? Who wants to be treated like that.
Yadda yadda, JW/religion rant.

Huh, I've never heard these things before. That's actually very disappointing to hear. When I've asked about how missionaries are supposed to behave, I've always been told that they avoid going any place uninvited. I do know that they require two missionaries to go everywhere, not to pressure people, but as a liability thing.
I do know that many people are not fond of LDS missionaries because many of them either don't care and are going because their parents require them to, or they turn it into a contest of how many people they can baptize.

Because he responded to a ridiculous comment with something bordering on silly?
If you saw butthurt in there, you went in looking for it.

we have mormons that live in the apt below us, they helped us move in to our place for almost an hour in a biblical down pour. while moving we found they were mormon, which left me a bit uneasy of them. they then invited us to a bbq and we went with the idea that when they started preching we were outta there, not only did they not bring up anything but they were all very nice. so i guess it turely depends on who you run into, these people were great, others annoying as all get out.

I've found that most people of any religion are pretty decent about not bringing it up unduly, or getting in your face about it. There are always just a few die-hard evangelicals (of whatever faith or denomination) who can't not talk about it and who establish a bad reputation for the rest of them. I've never had a religious person get on my case whenever the subject has come up and I've professed no religion.

Another way to turn the JW's away: Have a few small American Flags. Agree to hear them out if they first take the flag and recite the "Pledge of Allegiance" with you.

Agreed. These people have ads up on our city buses, claiming that prayer is effective innocul;ation against H1N1. I think not.

They should be required to show that it's the case through a medical study.
If they can, let them claim all they want.
