Gene Roddenbery the man behind Star-Trek in the 60's saw this coming when he interwove Eugenics Wars in the History of Earth in the Future.
The Chinese are looking at pushing population control as a result of 'Global Climate Change'. So how soon before population control edicts begin to appear, and who is going to make the decesion on who gets to reproduce, what cultures survive and what culture/peoples are bred out of the world population equation. And then the 'survivors' fighting over the resources of the world.
Since the Chinese and Muslim populations are the majority in most Eurasian areas, we will see how population cotrols evolve. And we thought the Crusades were a bad time, wait and watch if this becomes ther prevailing thought. Genoicidal wars, mass extermination of minorities, sterialization, the possibilities are endless.

I skimmed through the article and I didnt really notice anything to the degree your stating. Hasnt China had a population and family laws for a while now? I am sure I heard about the "one baby police".

China does have one child law, but if 1st child is female, another is tried (illegal or underground) to get a boy. The inroads to population control will be suttle and paced to prevent major opposition till too late to reverse. Even Verne covered population controls in his writtings, as well as Orwell in the 1800's. We saw another attempt of population control in Germany 33-45, where 'Aryan's' could reproduce at will and others were controlled or eliminated/removed from areas. Even today German Law provides benifits for 'pure' yes the word is used, Germans to reproduce to keep pace with immagrant numbers.

Mmmm, perfect babies.
Eugenics is coming, be it to breed blonde hair and blue eyes into our kids, or to http://www.yourdiscovery.com/science/genius_sperm_bank/?cc=US - use sperm from genius's in IVF.
Or, you know, to http://www.nature.com/scitable/topicpage/Embryo-Screening-and-the-Ethics-of-60561 - breed out diseases like breast cancer.

I find that an interesting and legitimate method to a climate problem. I feel that the second article does bring up a valid point in saying
"For those who balk at the notion that governments should control
family sizes, just wait until the growing human population turns twice
as much pastureland into desert as is now the case, or when the Amazon
is gone, the elephants disappear for good and wars erupt over water,
scarce resources and spatial needs." The Neo-Malthusianism viewpoint on this is very interesting, although it may STOP the issue of global climate change it will certainly bring about social change (in either a good or bad way), and you don't know how bad it could get. Population is an issue when it comes to climate issues, but so is waste of just about every resource we have. Inefficient use of everything, ineffective ways to stop it.

I believe any population problems we have can be fixed by technology, but I think with the economic system we have now it will never happen. Our society is based on growth, and if the human population can double but our resource consumption stays the same, our growth has plateaued, and with a supply and demand market that is very unwanted.
Something needs to change and it will when there is no other options.

Agreed. We're now looking at a revolution in GM food crops that are resisted based on possible environmental impacts and the business practices of the companies that do the engineering. We may be able to continue feeding growing populations while reducing greenhouse gasses. To sustain populations we need 2.3 kids per family, otherwise the population declines and our economic base becomes more reliant on immigration for labor, and paying into our social services declines and cannot keep up with the aging population that no longer works. Not to mention the human rights issues associated with birth-control policies.

Who are we to choose the population of the planet? If someone wants to have a kid, let them. If someone wants more than one kid, its their decision. Its a right as a human being to choose whether or not we want a kid. If you don't want a kid you shouldn't fool around.

And we all thought what Hitler proposed was aborant. Selecting the 'perfect' population for the world. What will the new 'master race' be by consensus or force? And for all who think that one race/culture will not rise to the top of the selection chain are fooling themselves. Nature of the human animal, survival of the fittest.
Again the Chinese know patience, not this year, or generation, thier time is coming.

Practice for oppressing the world. By shere numbers any population control benifits the Chinese, as as they 'westernize' expansion is inevitable, by force more than likely. "Resistance is futile...' to quote the The Borg. Ort the 'Coms' and the "Yangs' from another original Star Trek.
Two scenario's the Middle Eastern Muslim populations as they expand in numbers will have to expand for resources, and the Chinese the higher threat expanding for resources. These were 'war gamed' many times at the War College through the years.

He's right though, in a mathematical sense. It's not some deliberate nefarious agenda, but 'white' societies are being vastly outbred by the Chinese and by the collective Muslim population (not that they're in any way ethnically homogeneous), and probably by the Indians as well. White folks aren't going to disappear or anything, but as a proportion of the world's population, and possibly even in absolute numerical terms, we're shrinking. The 'replacement rate' is 2.1 kids per couple, and in a lot of European countries don't even come close to meeting that. I'm not sure what the North American figures are.
Any species, race or people that fails to breed in proportion to its competitors will eventually die out; that's pretty simple biological competition. I'll be far too dead to care, but in a few centuries the ethnic picture of the Earth could be very different.
That said, all of this differs from deliberate population control or eugenics. We will, however, at some point exceed the carrying capacity of the Earth to such a degree that necessary resources become too rare to not be fought over. At that point all bets are off.

Exactly, hence the claim of lunacy. These people don't have it out for us, and frankly by the time this is important, most of the people on this forum will be long gone.

This is true. The question will boil down to whether it will be cheaper to colonize other planets or start killing each other, though. I doubt child limitations will be placed before either one of those occurs on a wide scale.

I was having this discussion with my environmental health Prof the other day.
But seriously, in the long term, obviously we will exceed the earths carrying capacity. We won't be alive to see it, but it will also happen a lot sooner than you'd think. Like I mentioned earlier, expectations are the population will be 12 billion people on earth by 2050, thats a complete double of our current population, in 40 years time. On top of lack of resources, we have an issue with space, where are all these people going to live? How are we going to get enough crops to feed these people? Where are we going to put all the waste produced? How are we going to produce enough energy? Whether global warming is caused by humans or not, pumping CO2 into the atmosphere at the rate that we are now, its very unhealthy no matter how you view it. What happens when we have twice the people to provide for? We will have a moon base before I'm dead, I'm fairly certain. But not a colony. We MAYBE & MIGHT have a base on mars, I'm pretty skeptical on that possibility though. Space colonization is obviously the long term solution, but in the short term, it's not going to happen. Grim thoughts, but IMO, they are also realistic.

From what familiarity I have on the population debate (we had a unit on it in poli-sci) as societies become more economically developed the bithrate drops off to sustainable levels or lower(as is the case with much of europe) Indian and China should level off in the near future, but will usemore resources. Improved argriculture and technology are really our only way out of this mess, other than saying screw it and stopping aid todeveloping nations and hoping a lot of the world-s populationdies of disease or kills each other.
