when people pile a bunch of crap in front of the safe. Luckily I have a shotgun that wont fit in the safe cable locked to my bed, just needed to pop a coyote because the stupid cat froze up and wouldn't come inside. Only twice has anybody ever done such a thing, both times I needed a gun that day. Not smart.

Meh, I guess they're under the impression you'll be using your firearms in a controlled, planned setting/ manner. Obviously not always the case, but for some people (many) that wouldn't matter.

Last time this happened I didn't have time to put on pants let alone move stuff. I probably have 2-3 wildlife emergencies per year involving immediate threat to our animals, you'd think this would be routine. If the coyote freezes solid i may prop it up snarling in front of the door before i leave for work.

Wildlife emergencies? Like what?

Bears/coyotes going after the dog, deer hit by cars, coyotes treeing the cats, suspected rabid animals, or simply coyotes making enough noise at 2am to get me our of bed. There are just too many coyotes around, and when I've missed opportunities to shoot them and a cat dissappears the next day I feel like a jackass. This one is getting skin-hatted.

Can you send one of those Coyotes my way? The old lady next door keeps feeding all the stray cats and they keep crapping in my yard.

So why do you have to shoot anything in your yard? I've had a black bear try to open my front door, meh.

Because sometimes not everyting that needs protecting is safely inside the house.....

I'm getting ready to break out the .22 or my .177 'cos of some damn doves that have moved in and aren't getting any hints to vamoose. They have brought parasites in with them as well.

And whats not "controlled, planned setting/ manner" about a piece of land big enough to do this on, that you own, that needs pest control?

The controlled plan is obviously to kill the pests. Sounds pretty solid to me.

While I don't have your issues, obviously, NOTHING gets in front of the safe. Even the range bag that lives in the same closet as the safe doesn't impede opening it. Family knows this. (It helps that the safe is in "my" corner)

My dad and a couple of his buddies did this while on guard duty out at Ft. Riley in Kansas. They were guarding some warehouses near the Kansas river in the dead of winter. The river froze over and the coyotes started coming across and making as if they were going to go after my dad and his buddies. They had 1 round each (you're supposed to fire it as a call for help) between the three of them. They bagged 3 coyotes and then fixed bayonets in case any more came. They were too far out for anyone to hear the shots that they did fire and were only relieved when their rotation was up. The duty officer had a cow over the fact that their weapons were discharged until they took him back out to their positions and showed just how close the coyotes were when they shot them and the 3 coyote bodies in the dumpster next to the warehouses. The duty officer subsequently issued 5 rounds per guard stationed at those warehouses whenever the river was frozen over for the rest of the winter.

I have done this, it was the last time I went hunting.  I shot 3 and a Coy-dog. 210 yards, 55grain bullet.

I just keep my handgun on my desk when I'm home.  Never know when it may come in handy.

The closest I have come to defending property against wildlife is popping peacocks in the ass with a BB gun when they tried to steal the chicken's food at my dad's house.

Bears can be jerks. One ransacked my grandparents garage, punched a huge hole in the wall and destroyed a freezer (and ate a turkey and canned ham). I've been charged by them before (scarier than a car crash) and come face to face with them after putting two rounds between their feet without them even flinching. I typically make every attempt at making potentially dangerous wildlife afraid of humans since they can get pretty bold. Packs of coyotes routinely kill dogs and livestock here and you even find them in the city, some go 65-70lbs and are genetically 90% wold since they interbred on their way down from Canada in the 50's-60's. We had no significant population until the late 80's or early 90's here. Between coyotes, bear, and the loss of intermediate habitat the deer populations have tanked. Moose are still the local animal that scares me more than anything.

^ i feel like a wolf would sooner eat a coyote before mating with it. the coyotes we have in iowa are puny compared to wolfs. like a bull mastiff gettin the groove on with a austrailian shepard
