Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake yesterday and at least 10 aftershocks followed, including two in the 5 range. There are expected to be thousands dead and the bodies are being piled onto the streets from the rubble as there are little emergency vehicles and workers. There is not much left of one of the largest hospitals in the area as it was almost completely destroyed by the devastating quakes. There is no electricity or running water and the land lines are disconnected. The archbishop of Haiti was reported to be found dead in the aftermath of the quakes.

More updated news on the quakes can be found http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&source=hp&q=haiti+earthquake&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=vzVOS4GlK8SUtgeLhuDaDA&sa=X&oi=news_group&ct=title&resnum=2&ved=0CCIQsQQwAQ - here.

I have friends in school who have family living in Haiti and all they can do is hope and pray that none of them were hurt.

Also: The U.S., Canada, European, and some Latin American countries are sending aid to Haiti. The U.S. is sending an http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Military/2010/0113/US-sends-aircraft-carrier-to-help-with-Haiti-earthquake-damage - aircraft carrier, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department is http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/01/13/spearheads-global-response-haiti-earthquake/ - sending an urban search and rescue team to help with the recovery of people in the rubble.

We have a pretty big Haitian population here at UCF.

A few of them are getting together a relief group.

My French class was canceled today because my teacher's husband is on the "DART" team (Canadian Military Disaster Response Team) and he is being deployed.

That sucks.
