I know, 2 threads back to back, but im bored and would like some info.

Who here wears an expensive watch? As in... $500+. I was recently looking at Movados, but i have small wrists and most dont fit me too well. I do like the simple styling of them though. I want a time piece, and not a dive watch with 9 dials, a speedometer, a radio, a tide table and stopwatch built in.

The model i found is the Safiro, but im still looking around:

Any suggestions on brands/models that kind of fit what im looking for? I might pick up the Movado anyway, but im always open to suggestions.

I would not choose to wear an expensive watch if i was doing any activity that might leave it at the bottom of a lake.

Kids will cure you of anything nice, stupid OSHA won't let me wear one and AFAIK blackberrys are the new expensive watch.

I'm a sucker for watches, but much like sunglasses I stick to cheapos. I have probably a dozen Fossils...but inevitably whenever I buy an expensive trinket like sunglasses, watches, or headphones (just dropped $150 bucks on some Bose headphones, waiting on breakage) I break / lose them.
At some point in the future I may become organized enough for a nice Rolex and some Ray Bans, but for now some Aero's and a Fossil / Relic will have to do :P.

The only luxury things I would spend $500 on are headphones, computer parts, and paintball guns.

That watch sort of makes me want to rethink that. Something about spending $500 on something that is PURELY aesthetic bothers me, though.

Gatyr, that movado's MSRP is actually $1695... You can find them for around 8-900 though. Cheapest i saw one was on sale for $575, that was before i decided i wanted it and now i cant find it for that price again.

I don't wear a watch. In the technical service industry, a watch is something to get scratched, or electrocute me. My cell phone is my time piece.

Christ.

When I'm comfortably well off and care more about my wrist than starving children, I'll give that watch another look.

Nope, not in the grand scheme of things its not. But, it is still getting to the "high(er) end" for the price scale of watches.

I can think of much better things to spend $500+ on then a watch.

Then again, at my job where things tend to get broken, bled on, and puked on, $30 is just right.   It tells time and has a second hand, so it does what I need it to do.

I thought this thread would be about Cell Phones, because that's what mine is 90% of the time, an over-priced watch.

Honestly, I've never seen the point of paying more than $100 for a watch. The fact of the matter is that you aren't going to be wearing anything that expensive while climbing mount Everest (so the altimeter is worthless) or while scuba diving (so the waterproof up to 300 meters is useless). Let's face it, the thing tells time and since the invention of the quartz crystal work, they all stay pretty well in time so long as you wind them regularly or put a new battery in them once a year. I personally find the more expensive Movado, Rolex, and Tag Heuer pieces to be gaudy rather than artistic or even aesthete. I like my plain, unassuming Guess chronograph with a leather band more than almost anything I see in an expensive jewelry case.

I used to always wear watches, like $50-70, but after a while they got annoying. Also, I scratched them up pretty bad over time. Now, I cannot stand to have anything on my wrists.

I'm a serious watch fundie as well. They are my one weakness when it comes to fashion. I couldn't care about anything else.

I'll post pics of mine later, it's like 5AM here and everyone else is asleep. Can't get to camera.

They make some very nice, very thin ones, I don't see how they would be too thick or too big for your wrist.

Patek Philippe also make some nice watches, if you are into classic. I've also got some nice Rotary watches, one from my granddad.

As for spending too much on a watch", whatever. If the OP wants to and likes watches, why not?

There is such a thing as being willing to pay a premium for something you like, and something you like will hold more value for you than something you settle for.

My watch "collection" is basically a couple of G Shocks for every day wear, a couple of nicer Casio watches, a Tag and Rotaries for smarter wear, a Movado and a Patek for "Dress" wear. Any gig I wear a Movado or a Patek to will pretty much be something that screams disposable income, but then so would the nice suit, the fancy car, and the high class location I'm going to.

I wouldn't wear a Movado to downtown Hilbrow, but that's a differet story.

If you don't "get" spending a wad on a watch, look at what you are willing to spend it on. It's the same thing. Sometimes it is also nice to just own "nice" things as well. I'll never spend a couple of thousand on a suit, but I can sure appreciate a good well tailored expensive suit....

I've seen one of these for sale, and I'm sad to admit I want one.

To the cellphone guys-it's all about form over function. A watch is just a man's bracelet, a piece of jewelry. My watch I'm wearing is currently dead-but I feel naked with out it, lol.

I use my phone as a watch. When I'm at work, I need a watch as I have to sign people out. I can't have my phone and I feel naked without my wrist watch at work. Otherwise it's annoying to wear a watch on a day to day basis.

I still have watches event hough I work in a building with multiple GPS controlled clocks. On my work console I have access to at least 3 different time measuring instruments. My car has a clock, my PC has a clock, there are clocks on the walls in some of the rooms in my house, and my cell phone has a clock.

Doesn't mean I don't use a watch.

Besides, going to another posters point, what screams "mug me" more than glancing at a watch or hauling out your Blackberry?

Which Patek do you have? And was it handed down to you or did you purchase it yourself? Theyre more money than i would ever spend on a watch, but that kind of makes me want it more lol.

And as for not finding watches that fit, they do fit, but the faces on most watches are too large. I need something between 35-40mm otherwise it just looks stupid.

Im glad at least one other person here understands where im coming from though haha.

I'm hard on watches.  I wear a cheapo Timex knockoff at work and I bump it into everything.  I have what I consider to be a nice Bulova Harley-Davidson watch that my wife bought me a couple of years ago.  Wore it to work a couple of days to show it off and I scratched the piss out of the bezel.  Made me sick.

Do you not see the point of a nice suit? A nice tie? Shoes? A nice watch is one accessory a man can have that can be quite beautiful, and classy. Sure many pricey watches are worthless over the top gaudyness, but a nice watch should still be appreciated, whether you have a cellphone or not. Cmon Tallen, I know you clean up well, a nice watch is a good addition.

for all of those who dont see the point...

i never did either, until i lived in a world that had money (exgf made some and worked with people who made a lot more)

when you go to certain events it is important to look good, it never hurts to have a nice pair of shoes, slacks, shirt, tie, coat, belt and watch... you never know what conversation might lead to a job offer or business deal...

I wear a Tourneau.

Got it about 9 years ago, and it is an excellent watch. My problem is I wear it all the time. I can't tell you how many times I've been playing paintball and someone has commented about "why are you wearing THAT watch to play paintball"...

Its just perfectly comfortable and very tough. But, a few months back I scratched the benzel while out on my quad... So I will need to replace it soon.

I prefer stainless with stainless bands as they hold up great, but can be expensive.

This Fossil that I paid $35 for.

I like watches, but would I pay that much for one? Hell no.

I wear an old Fossil when I wear one at all. Only ones with a buckle, because a watch is a serious safety hazard as a machinist, you take it off and stick it on you belt before you get to work.

AFRICA :P Actually I'd love a laser watch. Do you think Omega have released them to the general market yet?

I'm not as crazy as those pictures make me look, we've just moved into a new house, and those shelves were available for me to use as a "dressing table". Sick and tired of having to hunt high and low I put my watches there.

Then it occured to me that I'm forever looking for my knives when I want a specific one, and having lost about a dozen of them over the years, I put them all in the same place.

Then the same thought occured to me about the holsters/mag pouches. So they got their own shelf.

Choopie, just checked my phone, it was set for MMS pictures, that's like 100x200 or something, and blown up to 800x600. Oops.

I spent around $200 on my watch and accessories, but I only use it to work out.  I haven't worn a watch since I wore mine out my junior year of high school.  I'm quite sure I would never spend $500 on a watch, for the same reason I'll never spend $40,000 on a car.  It's not that it's too expensive for me to afford, it's just not worth that much to me.
