So..I was getting bored with my SGW AR-15. see pict below...

So I sold my Smith-Corona 1903A3, bought the Bushmaster 11.5/5.5" barrel assembly and the ACE Skeleton stock and made this...

If you're going to slap a new stock on it, might as well get a retracting one.

Your first mistake was buying an upper that had an integral carry handle. Flattops are the way to go.

IMO, retracting stocks suck. I have never fired an AR with one that was comfortable to me.  Now due to the limited budget, I didn't get an upper receiver, I just swapped barrels, flat tops were not an option.

LOL'ed hard.

Personally, I'm also a fan (both aesthetically and functionally) of flat top ARs, preferably with a RIS and a forward handguard.  But hey, a gun is definitely better than no gun.

 That's the spirit, Pariel!
Budget and NY law were influencing my decision to go with a barrel change. I took the money I had from the sale of the S-C and put it towards the parts I wanted. Although the rifle is a pre-ban made in 1985, I would not be allowed to put a retractable stock on it because it was originally made without one.  The barrel has a pinned and welded over suppressor so that it can not be removed. The original rifle had threaded flash suppressor and bayonet lug.  The bayonet lug is useless on this barrel and flash suppressors don't make it invisible in the dark.

Most New Jerseyans have to do the same thing -- because black rifles are definitely the cause of most firearms crimes (and now I need a dodgy).

I do like the new short barrel a lot.  I think the "permanent" flash hider look is actually pretty sweet.  The only thing that I would actually find annoying about the rifle would be the extremely high red dot, although I guess it probably allows some very strange/comfy shooting positions, especially while laying on the couch.

The red dot is a tad high- I prefer a reflex sight at about half that height personally, but as long as you train your muscle memory to it, it's fine. Is the carry handle weaver adapter a see-through for the irons?

It is a very old Leatherwood, non see through.  I have a similar one on my other AR.  The upper is an original Colt M16.  back in 1985, SGW/Olympic Arms made the lower and added M16 upper and internals.  I dumped the internals and replaced with legal AR15 parts.  I can still use the M16 bolt carrier in it.  The height of the optic doesn't give me an issue when I snap in with it.  We'll see after I get the headspace checked and take it to the range.

I like the retro-look, but you might be wrong on the collapsable stock thing if NY law is a mirror of the old AWB. I think as long as it was already an "assault-rifle" with a bayo lug and flash hider you can have as many evil features as you want. I also dislike collapsing stocks with that annoying twang the buffer makes in my cheekbone.

picking up my receiver and a pair of bolt cutters/ future rivit tool  tomorrow Big smile

I am looking for an A1 upper reciever, I go more for the history than the bling. Will have my CAR-15 modded as a XM177E2, as soon as I get a A1 upper.

Small piece of foam rubber in sping will make the 'twang' go away, old GI trick.

As for NYS as long as the weapon is pre-ban and came with colapsable stock is legal, after market stocks or post-ban modifacations are a no-no. And as long as weapon is pre-ban 20 and 30rd magazines are allowed, if not magazine blocks are required.

Bushmaster has A1uppers. I like the whole 'Nam era retro look and  NYS would allow me to put a pinned in retractable stock.  But I don't like retractable stocks for the AR.  The barrel will reduce my range, maybe up to 300 yards (?).  OS, a piece of foam rubber in the buffer tube inside the spring?? how long of a piece?  The ACE stock is sweet...I like how it feels on a M4 type a friend has, very comfortable.

Got my receiver today and am contemplating if i'm in over my head. The front trunion holes do not line up perfectly (and I do need to clean up the holes in the trunions anyways). I'm going to modify a pair of bolt cutters to squish the short front rivets and make plates to do the long ones with a vise or a press. For installing the barrel I am torn between making a jig to do it with a press, making a similar jig and pressing it with a bottle jack braced between my basement steps, or using a threaded rod through the barrel with a plate cut to fit on the back of the bolt carrier and a brass nut on the muzzle, since I think this would be the most controllable method. However, if I get the barrel stuck, I'm boned and will need to use a press anyways. Time to get some cheap rivets to practice with. Confused

As a side-note, I was able to locate a yugo mag at the gun shop the appeared unissued, but on attempting to disassemble it for degreasing, discovered that it is dented and non-functional. I will be returning this and trying to locate another correct mag, or at least another euro mag with the ridge-back. The chinese mags seem like they'll work fine but fit a bit tight. On a lighter note the blueing nicely matches my kit and it appears to be a well-made receiver, and the tapco G2 trigger group seems like it will have a nice pull, but I can tell the retention spring is going to make me very, very frustrated.

I'm getting that urge to buy another firearm. And not the urge to buy something sensible which I'll need later either (like a shotgun for example). I want a P-90 civilian or an AK-74 or even a SCAR civilian.

If you want a '74 get a Sagia conversion, Arsenal Inc has them right now(I <3 the plum furniture). Some of the current guns has non-chromed US barrels, some apparently are 5.56mm bore as well, leading to tumbling. 5.45 ammo is a deal right now. P-90's are sweet, but I've never shot the civy version, you'll probably end up using it as a go-to HD gun, but the SCAR civi would just be sick.

The only problem with the civie P-90 is that the barrel has to be a few inches longer to make it conform to non-sbr status. Of course the bull-pup setup makes it feel a lot shorter than it actually is. I got an e-mail from Shorty the other day (he's been off the OTF for a while hasn't he?)

I'm betting a civy P-90 with the long barrel (I'm sure the overall length is the bare legal min. for a rifle) is still closer to your body than a handgun in a weaver stance, and I'm betting you get better velocity with HP or SST's. I'd think it'd be really handy. I might start riveting tonight, think I have my bolt-cutter tool about where it needs to be
