Today for my seminar class Paul Gootenberg, author of Andean Cocaine journeyed from stonybrook university to hofstra U today to discuss his book with our class.

all was well and good up until he told us that without a doubt, heroine is not harmful, and cocaine is a soft drug.

it was about that time i stopped paying attention and zoned out.

i guess the root of this post is, how the hell do these kinds of people get PHDs?

Compared to other drugs that are out there cocaine is a relativly soft drug.
However that Heroin isnt harmful line is complete bs. Drugs are harmful period, it doesn't matter if it's cocaine or weed it all effects you.

On the topic of cocaine: using cocain while pregnant cause the proximal-promoter region for the baby's PKC gene to be methylated and therefore shut down, leaving the child almost guaranteed to suffer ischemia  It has been dubbed "murder by methylation."

To play devil's advocate....

Under that reasoning, tylenol is harmful because it "affects" you by relieving headaches.  I personally don't believe heroin isn't harmful, abuse of the drug itself is.  Much like firearms, it's all relative to the person using it.  Nobody becomes a physical addict after one shot/line/hit of H.  Maybe mentally, but if they become addicted mentally, the same can be chalked up for marijuana, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, etc...

It's extremely rare that anyone possesses the self control to use only on certain siutations, but that's not the drugs fault.  Junkies blame the drug because it's easier than admitting that they themselves are the ones with the problem.  Cocaine itself has been proven not to physically addictive, other than the initial comedown from the high and psychological dependency post dose.  It's not like heroin where you withdrawal for days/weeks until your body adapts.

"A common myth is that cocaine is not addictive because it lacks the physical http://www.emedicinehealth.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=9974 - withdrawal symptoms seen in alcohol or http://www.emedicinehealth.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=11466 - heroin addiction . Cocaine has powerful psychological addictive properties. As more than one user has reflected, "If it is not addictive, then why can't I stop?" The trend in drug abuse in the United States is presently multiple or polydrug abuse, and cocaine is no exception. Cocaine is often used with alcohol, sedatives such as Valium, Ativan, or heroin, as an upper/downer combination. The other drug is also used to moderate the side effects of the primary addiction. A common polydrug abuse problem, seen especially in adolescents, is cocaine, alcohol, and marijuana. "  (Taken from emedicinehealth)

As to the physical effects on the body, I'm sure it's not good for you.  Although; neither is the bender on liquor which is glamorized by society.

Trying drugs as a teenage =/= considering them harmless as an adult.

I guess driving under the influence, losing your license, running over barrels, and doing cocaine doesn't matter when you're Republican.

Why should it?  Driving drunk into a reservoir and abandoning a passenger to die doesn't seem to matter if you're a Democrat.

(Can we just agree that pretty much all of them are scumbags?)

It doesn't matter to me at all actually.

My point was that FE seems to be making a big deal about Obama smoking weed at one point in time.
