Well i finally went and done it. Bought my first, and i think a damn fine, rifle. S&W M&P15 Optics Ready. I went with the optics ready for a few reasons, but they dont really matter to you guys.
5.56 Nato, 10 rnd mags, no flash suppressor, no bayo lug, pinned stock. NY gun laws blow dogs for quarters.
Anywho i need recommendations on sights. I was thinking of just ponying up the moneys and getting the Larue Troy folding combo and then an EOTech in the future. But then i saw the Magpul polymer folding sights which are less than half the price for the set than the Troy ones. Anyone know if these are good?
Better pics will come when the sights get here, after i decide which ones to buy.
As promised, better pics:

The vortex strikefire is great for the money, and comes with a screw on 2x lens too. Mine has to be sent back due to a factory defect, but the clarity/build is great. Super sturdy, and less than $200 online.

Nevermind about iron sights, ordered the troy's. Go big or go home lol. And i was looking at that red dot as well, or maybe the primary arms m4 when they get them back in stock.

You didn't happen to get the 5 free magazines did you? I was looking at a S&W M&P15 on Tuesday at a local shop and the guy behind the counter pointed out that until May 31 you could receive 5 free mags (not sure on size however) with a mail in rebate type deal. I don't know if that offer is model specific or not.

Yeah 5 free mags but its a mail in offer so itll be a few weeks before i see them im thinking.

Nice! Congrats on the purchase! I've been looking into getting an AR-15 type rifle myself. I've narrowed it down to either a Bushmaster Varminter 24" bull barrel or a DPMS 24" equivalent. Of course paying for college prohibits making any purchases for awhile.

Pretty. Is the M&P still gas or did they go with a piston?

Yeah, in terms of iron sights, the very point of iron sights is that they're backup for your optics, and so you don't want to compromise on durability.

Now, we know that money isn't a problem for you Niq, but how much did this set you back?
You could have obtained a bargain bin 18" Gov't profile one from CMMG for $600.

It's on the way as of tomorrow.
Paid for 2 weeks ago mind you. Got the runaround from a local gunshop for a week and a half before I finally got fed up, got a $50 transfer fee quote from another, and finally settled on a pawn shop here in town. BUT, of course, with my luck, they've been trying for two days to no avail to fax their FFL information. So instead of waiting any longer, I'm driving there in the morning and getting a copy of the information to fax myself.
Between that and now having to get a new scope, this damn gun better kill a whole lotta Zekes.
On the bright side, after my last paycheck, I decided on a nice molle bag to keep it in, and it should be here tomorrow.

$1150 after taxes from a local shop. Actually not a bad price for the NY area for an S&W AR in 5.56. Larue front/rear sights were $200 total. Plus the 5 free mags. I need to find some pre-ban 20's or 30's though, to make my zombie kit more complete. And then get my pistol permit... (:
I missed Eville's question: It is gas operated.
Rednekk: Keep making awesome AR products and my money will keep going to MA.

Hot lipstick lesbians with AR's? Sweet! oh, NiQ, break the barrel in with brass cased bullets, not steel. in fact, stay away from Wolf or any of that steel cased Russian ammo. You will be doing twice the cleaning after shooting that stuff.

With a barrel that long, why did you elect to go with the short gas system as opposed to a mid or full length one? The only real reason for a shorter gas system is to shorten the overall barrel length, but that's not the case on this one...

Err bri, barrel is only 16 inches, shortest allowable in NY. Short gas system cause it was at the store. And because im going to replace it with a 9inch troy when i care to add rails, maybe. Still not sure, i kinda like the 7" M4 style handguard.

I got it at a Gander Mtn in Rochester. And i kind of made that up about 16" being the shortest barrel legal in NY, that could be totally false lol. Hopefully going shooting this weekend. Hopefully.

This is only prudent. Due to greater time spent outdoors and interacting with people, Z-day is more likely to occur in the summer.

I guess if the M1A isn't available, I'll have to take the M1 Garand, unless you're got a 7.62 AR. It's just hard to stop a seditious moose with a 5.56, and that has always seemed to be a significant point for a militia.

Sweet man. I'm picking up a S&W M&P 15-22 when I get back to FL next week. Going for the 22lr because I can get at least 10x more rounds for the same price, and have no need for 5.56.
