At this weekend event the sponsor David Carricos stoped by our campsite. He is a world class leathersmith and one thing he does is make leather gear for movie westerns. He mentioned he is making the leatherwear for the remake of 'True Grit'. Jesus can't hollywood come up with original ideas instead of ruining a classic. John Wayne's only Oscar and Hollywood is going to basterdize the original.
He also mentioned the upcoming remake of 'F-Troop' as a full length movie, originality is dead in hollywood obviously. -------------

If Hollywood could come up with original ideas the place wouldn't be overrun with liberals. An F-Troop remake I can live with but I'm with you on the True Grit remake. -------------

Good God no. That movie is what it is because of the acting and directing styles that are long dead. Today's Hollywood cannot hope to match that. It will be awful. I will not be seeing this movie...nor even recognizing its existence. ------------- ? |

True Grit wasn't really any good. Honestly, John didn't make any good movies after Red River. ------------- My shoes of peace have steel toes. |

I don't like the old westerns, so I A)haven't seen the original true grit, and B) won't be seeing the remake.

I liked Red River a lot. I grew up watching those old movies, and I think my all time favorite has got to be either Rio Bravo or She Wore A Yellow Ribbon. ------------- ? |

I don't find westerns interesting up until Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone. I don't like the spit and polish look of early American westerns. -------------

It's certainly in my top 5. Sergio Leone elevated the western to a much deepier, grittier level.
Talk about way ahead of his time. I'll bet if you looked hard enough TGTBATU is on alot of modern directors' top films list.
Another western on my Top 5 is Unforgiven. -------------

You're absolutely right about those spaghetti westerns being 'grittier' You don't watch them the same way you would a movie like "Rio Lobo" or "Chisum" They're two different kinds of Westerns. While I'm a huge fan of both types and will turn on any of them if they're playing on TV, there's no denying that the Leone/Eastwood type is just.....better. The depth of characters is so much more in those films ("Searchers" being a great exception) Although, I never cared much for Eastwood's "Pale RIder" I've got two DVD Collections that if I absolutely love- Man with No Name Trilogy, and John Wayne/John Ford Collection. I almost prayed that I caught Swine Flu this season so I could spend a few days just watching them. ------------- ? |

I liked Wayne in 'The Undefeated', and of course my favorite westerns are a tie between 'The Unforgiven' and 'The Outlaw Josey Wales'.

Haha, they made the Man with No Name Trilogy available on Hulu for a while. I actually looked forward to going to work so when slow time hit, I sat back with some orange juice and chips and watched some Eastwood flicks. Good times were had.
I'll give John Wayne a shot though, maybe the movies will mean more to me now that I'm older than when I tried to watch them as a kid.
As a sidenote, did you hear they're remaking Have Gun Will Travel into a movie with Eminem set in modern day? I lol'd. -------------

I'd go as far as to say that "No Country For Old Men" was a western. Albeit, a modern western, but a movie that carried the visuals and theme of a post-spaghetti western of old. My opinion may be way off here though. |

Nope, totally agreed with you. No Country was pretty much what the modern interpretation of a western should be. And I could totally see the relation between that movie and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly as far as directing style goes. -------------
