I played keys instruments in a rock band for a little over two years. Since the demise of our band, I started picking up bass guitar, but never got as good as I was on keyboard. And I have been running sound for another band for about three years. When we get the chance, a few of my friends from my old band and I get together and play music for an afternoon. Maybe someday we'll get the band back together.

Pics later.

I am a vocalist in a band so I guess my instrument would be my throat/vocal cords.

Always wanted to learn drums.

Thinking about learning to play the keyboard over the summer.

I'm mainly a guitar guy, but over the years I've picked up a few other instruments that I am still resonably proficient playing; namely - piano, bass guitar & upright, tenor & alto saxophone, banjo (just enough to play Flogging Molly stuff and the like), and I probably couldn't play it anymore but I played bassoon for a short time.

Don't have any actual photo's of my guitars, but I'll shamelessly use stock photo's:

Epiphone G400 - on mine I have the pickups replaced with Seymour Duncan SH6 Distortions.
This was my go-to guitar in high school when I played in a punk band. So lightweight for playing live and just awesome sound.  Such a good guitar for the price.

...and of course the Gibson Les Paul (studio).

I have a really old, cheap no-name acoustic guitar.  The neck is warped to the point where it isn't play-able.  Holding on it for strickly for sentimental value.

No fancy amp set up, just a run of the mill 100 watt Marshall amp.  No pedals, just use the clean/dirty channels.

Don't feel like taking pics, so...

I have a couple more strats, just don't feel like searching them right now (they're 80's model Japs). The Ibanez is outfitted with an Evo pickup set (though I'm soon changine the bridge pickup back to stock), and I also have an old 50's model Kay acoustic.

Got a Marshall AVT150 combo, run through an old Marshall 4x15 cabinet, pushing 150 watts. sounds decent.  Not much on effects, so I just use a volume pedal, a wah pedal, and a fuzz face occasionally.

Bass is run through a Fender Bassman stack.  1 4x10 cab, 1 1x15 cab, and a 250 watt head.

My ESP is almost identical...I can't tell if it's the same color but I own the MH-1000 with the smoke/grey body. I actually like it better than my Jackson RR1.

My main music maker, I won't go into details because nobody will understand what I'm talking about (or care for that matter).

So far this year I've gotten a little over a dozen medals, the majority first places, and 3 trophies for competitions.

My other instrument:

I also played trumpet in middle school, and a bit of piano and guitar in high school.  The current set is more fun though.

Who the hell knows....

I don't buy into that gimmicky stuff.

However, Dunedin (where that pic was taken) was founded by Scottish immigrants and they kept a lot of the traditions and community events, etc.

I played euphonium in middle school.  Dropped it before high school though because if you wanted to do band, you also had to do marching band, which consumes all of your time and is also pretty lame.

Tell me about the bagpipes son.  I've been wanting to learn.  Anything you would suggest?
Also, I gotta find somewhere that sells me a kilt in the McKenzie tartan.

First off you need to find a good instructor.  You'll go absolutely no where (and probably wind up worse than when you started) if you try to go at it alone,  regardless of any previous musical experience.  The music is unique and previous experience won't really help at all.  Post or send me a PM with where you live and I'll help you find one.

You'll start off on whats called a practice chanter, like http://www.thepipershut.info/cgi/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=MAMCCALLUM_STANDARD_ - this .  You'll learn the basic fingering and embellishments, as well as half a dozen tunes or so on that.  From there you'll transition to the pipes.  The time it takes really depends on the person, anywhere from 2 months to a year but the average is about 6 months.  Expect to shell out about $1600 for a mid range set of pipes.  The low end would be about $900 and the upper end around $5k.  As a warning, there are many very very poor quality chanters and pipes out there, usually made in pakistan.  You usually see the chanters for about $20 and the pipes for about $150.  Be aware, they very rarely even work, so don't waste your money.

As for the kilt, arguably the best supplier in the US is J. Higgins

http://jhiggins.net/

If you want a real kilt (16 oz of wool), which is all that we wear, you'll pay about $400 if it's a common tartan or up to $550 for an uncommon tartan.

Just to add to what WGP said on pipes, only ever buy chanters and pipes made from African blackwood or Polypenco.  Many decorative or just crappy sets of pipes are made of Rosewood or similar pretty woods which make for lousy pipes.  The reason is blackwood and polypenco are both very dense substances, and this lends to the tone of the pipes.  Rosewood is garbage.

I fully agree you need an instructor, I tried teaching myself and learned a lot about the pipes, but never took off with them.  If you do want to start learning on your own, however, pick up http://www.amazon.com/College-Piping-Highland-Bagpipe-Tutor/dp/B001PFBW42 - this book .  It's the standard in learning pipes and any competent instructor will teach from that book anyway.

Good luck!

Not necessarily... There are many good books out there.  Use whatever your instructor wants you to.  Also, I didn't learn from a book, I had a few sheets of exercises my instructor wrote out.  I've successfully taught a few that way as well.  Earlier this month for the first time I had a student take a gold medal.  Almost better than winning them yourself.

Also, this is what happens under good leadership with everyone having had excellent instruction:

And this is what can happen if you go it alone.  This vid features those wonderful Pakistani made pipes I mentioned:

Whenever I see my friends playing their guitars, I have an urge to get an acoustic, but I know I lack motivation and I become uninterested in things fairly quickly. Save my self some money by knowing the truth, haha.
