...so I decided to say, "Hi."
Been too long since I last posted and I realized how much I missed the forums. Hopefully tallen didn't die again. I'm still living in Japan, we're wrapping up our spring deployment which included port visits to Pattaya Beach, Thailand, Singapore, and Subic Bay, Philippines. If I had the time I'd jump in chat and swap some stories, unfortunately we're going through INSURV (huge material condition inspection) so my life has been reduced to refurbishing our fanrooms and supervising paint teams. Anyway, I am relishing my return to the states in July so I can get in some quality paintball time. Let me know how you guys are doing. Edit: Now I know I've been away too long, ROFL_Mao has a girl friend. |

I have an extra room in my apartment. Sasebo doesn't have all the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, but it does have its moments. If you buy the ticket and agree to not drink all my liquor, you can stay for a visit of less than 90 days. After that you are an illegal alien, and I will subsequently not know who you are after that point in time.

Yea it's pretty clean when you move away from where all the Sailors are. The younger generation is more open towards Americans, the older generations just tolerate us, sometimes protest us being there. There are bars and clubs with signs posted outside that say "No Americans" or "Must have Japanese Guest", which (if you haven't travelled outside North America) can be kind of a slap in the face. The main thing is to respect their way of life and make an effort to adapt a little bit. Basic table manners and a small Japanese vocabulary goes a long way. Plus if you sing karaoke well, they will pay for your drinks/songs. |

Hint: probably a similar fraction to the number of WWII age people in our country now. In other words, enough. However, they probably also remember that the Americans pretty much paid to turn Japan into the country it is today, which aside from having massive national debt, is doing pretty well. ------------- BU Engineering 2012 |

| The focus isn't really on the atomic bomb, just American nuclear programs in general. When the Ronald Reagan came to Sasebo (some time in 2007 I think) there were a group of protesters outside the base saying the ship was unsafe to pull into port. I think the most unsafe feature of that ship was the 6,000 Sailors onboard that destroyed Sasebo on liberty, lol. |

There are alot of post-WWII baby boomers that share ideologies with their parents. So just being alive in a generation that experienced something like that isn't the only aspect to take into consideration-I'd imagine that something of that magnitude will be felt for several generations to come.
Baby boomer politics are just now starting to give way to a newer, more progressive (read:progressive as a term, not political ideology) way of thinking about things.
Hopefully by the next generation countries around the world will be able to sufficiently reinvogorate their respective economic systems. -------------

A number of other countries (including Australia if I remember correctly) do not allow nuclear-powered US Navy ships into their ports. Frankly, if I was Japanese, I would just be pissed off that another country thought it was fine to have a base in my country. I don't know if I'd mind that they bombed my country for being aggressive half a century ago. ------------- BU Engineering 2012 |

It's the actions of individuals who think they are immune from obeying Japanese laws that ruin it for the rest of us who never cause a ruckus. |

We're not there because we bombed them, we're there because they no longer believe in fighting wars. We're their big brother on the playground standing up for them.
True enough, our military bases are an ecenomic benefit to Japan. The downside to this are the same anywhere else in the world where you have a large, concentrated number of males under the age of 22. Stuff will get broken, drunkeness will happen and herpes is a consiquence. But they spend a large amount of their income on random crap they don't need where they are located so, free money for Japan. Granted I would prefer if all our forces acted more mature during their R&R sessions but you have to be realistic. Dumb kids are dumb kids. -------------

Considering they had troops deployed to Iraq, I think they can probably handle defending themselves for at least a little bit. The bases are far more important to us than them.
