That is so cool!

The laser specs similar enough that it should work. If I were you, I would at least try it...if it doesn't work, then you're out a lot less money.

If you try it and it works, post about it.

That is such a bad idea on so many levels...

I want one.

I've heard of people taking lasers out of high-speed DVD-ROM drives.

If this works, I might try hacking electronics for parts.

My buddy is an engineer at a company that designs lasers for manufacturing, Ill ask him about it tomorrow.

I like how as they're telling you not to point it at people, he's shining it in his eyes as he lights a smoke.

Just remember, electrical components are typically extremely cheap to manufacture.  It probably didn't cost them close to $7 to make that, much less $60.

I've always wanted a green laser pointer from http://www.wickedlasers.com/ - Wicked Lasers . The bluray model would be cool but it's mad expensive. I'd settle for their Nexus pointer.

That's both awesome and highly dangerous which is why you must make one and let me play with it. I might be able to find an old cd drive that you could gut for the laser but i'm not sure if that's the right power level. What I do know is that those lasers are dangerous though so you really need to be careful when building that thing. Also, don't trust your friends playing around with that, they'll probably blind you.

very dumb...

I love lasers, but they are not something to be taken lightly. A laser is a weapon, and will destroy your vision in a fraction of a second.

Forever.

The lasers you can buy are 5 mW. The reason is that your eye can react to a 5 mW laser and close if shined on your retna. Anything more powerful than 5 mW goes to the point where your eye can't react in time to the light, and it will damage your eye before you even have a chance to close your eye.

Permanently...

We have green lasers, and the ones you buy from China (where we got ours) are often mislabeled. So just because it says 5 mW doesn't mean it actually is.

And that isn't even taking into mind the issue with IR light and the effects that it can have on your vision.

In other words, that whole project is just asking to lose your vision or one of your friends... 150mW...

The reflections can be just as dangerous as the direct beam, especially at 150 mW...

FE, so not true. A laser is only a weapon when you use it as one.  What you have is a simple solid laser, crystal diode. Class IV when you push the button.  That one could be used as an engraver on weak material, plastics and wood. I tried making a resonator in my basement about 10 years ago based on our 3.5 kw resonator. I scrapped it.

Well, FE and Choop, luckily I do not have the brain capacity of a roach, so I think ill be okay.

Secondly, since I am going home tomorrow, im going to search locally and try to locate the correct laser I need from a supplier. If I cant, ill be sure to ebay thatt laser.

Also, FE you are correct about lasers being mislabeled. A wavelength of 405nm should be mostly violet in color, not blue. I want to get a true violet laser, although I dont think the batteries would have the correct voltage to power it. It more than likely would be the size of a brick.

400nm-480nm is visible light.  Damage to retina.

Guns can also do damage to my retina. Do you see me pointing .22lr in my eye?

Im well aware of how hazardous this can be. Hence why I dont plan on soldering a bunch of crap together then looking into the laser.

Little update.

DVDRW and similar diodes may produce a red light, and lower power things such as cd players will just produce IR light and will do nothing. I cant kill cockroaches with a laser jacked out of an old PC. Maybe I can shine a annoying red light on them if I dont short the diode.

I think Blu Ray diodes may work. If 'blue ray' lasers are truely 'blueray', then they should have a wavelength of around 450. Red lasers are about 600 or 800 mw I believe. I didnt check the spectrum chart so dont hate if I have the wrong number.

So.... Im going to plagarise the video and copy his design, but I may improvise. The diode is going to be from ebay to save cashmoney, and im going to email the seller of the diode to ask if he has the relay thing the video reccomended.

If all works, I might put it into a zippo case. Or, a bowers trench lighter knockoff. I collect vintage lighters so I want to pick the roomiest design.
