Basically this site has just about any imaginable kind of national data going back for as long as that data has been recorded in any particular country. You can chart every variable agaisnt each others, have the graph 'play' through years, compare and contrast countries, and so on and so forth. I know that sounds lame to about half of you, but if you're in the other half who are the least bit interested in the world, spend ten minutes playing with this. Just about everything you see in the application has a variable function. The graphical data representations are amazing.

Yup, he actually said that.

Hmm...Why did Russias life expectancy drop to <25 years in 1920? Then it increased 25 years from 1947 to -52.
EDIT: 1918 Flu...I didn't think it had been that long since my last history class.

I went from six to midnight because of that page. The main parameter they are missing is religion, but I guess not everyone is as fascinated by comparing religion with random variables to see what comes up as I am.
The World Values Survey is another cool pool of data, albeit they aren't nearly as well presented or pretty. I've spent hours on that site.

Apparently it has been, because it wasn't the flu!
Stalin began his purges in 1920, really ramped them up in '23 to be exact. You could turn your neighbor in, completely anonymously, for "capitalist crimes" such as them owning more than 1 pig (which they deemed was "speculation") or that they had at some point made an off-color joke about Stalin. Or, you could completely just make something up and have them carted off to the police who would then "coax" a confession out of them and then sentence them to the Gulag if they were lucky, or to immediate execution if they weren't. In 1947, the men finally started returning home from the occupation of Poland, East Germany, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Ukraine, etc. With the victory over Germany, Stalin relaxed his stance just a hair. I guess he felt that something like 50 million people in just two and a half decades was enough death for then. Mind you, he got all loony again in the later years, but couldn't really ramp up the efforts to slaughter his own people efficiently enough before he died and Kruschev started the first soviet "thaw."

I would say you have that backwards.
But that site is awesome. I wish it went back further for most things, though. The 80s is a little to recent for me for things like arms exports and imports.

Until the 1980's most countries didn't actually import or export arms. With the exception of the lend-lease program which was started in WWII and continued by the CIA/US Gov, exports of arms weren't conducted like they are today.
In the past, arms designers simply licensed their design to foreign manufacturers who then produced the weapons domestically. It wasn't until restrictions were lifted in the 1970's and the collapse of the Soviet Union in the late 80's and early 90's that wholesale exports of domestic arms on either side of the iron curtain began.

Meh...The only intense history class I took was AP US history, which got me out of all college history classes.

Religion's hard to represent on a single axis. Lots of variables.

All of which can be modeled using a magic 8-ball.
(Tallen, please leave uncle Joe alone. Your crazy talk about him is unwarranted. Next, you'll probably tell us that Hitler was an amature compared to Joey's shenanigins. You should get off your high horse because we once had slavery and stuff.
