Hey folks, need a bit of a favor:
I need to give a persuasive speech next week arguing for the removal of all whales from our oceans to make room for predicted sea level rises due to climate change. I'm trying to look up figures on how much (roughly) is spent annually on whale conservation, anyone have an idea of where I could find a rough figure?
I know, Do your own homework, tec9, INB4, etc, etc;
I appreciate it fellas

i can't think of a single good long-term consequence for the side you're arguing. I hope you didn't choose your topic because you'll be laughed out of the room if you were making this argument willingly.

Well, it was that or clubbing baby seals for sport, but I figured the latter was overdone. Everyone was picking serious topics and I figured I'd have a bit of fun.
However, I just made the awkward realization that when i did my math originally, I made a rather serious error in units and realized that all my figures on the amount of surface ice were in cubic kilometers, rather then cubic meters. Needless to say, removing all the whales of the major species would hardly take care of a single cubic kilometer, let alone the 3 million we're talking about. Color me embarrassed
I think I might transition to my fallback, which was Whaling itself (against, this time, most likely, going to have to ponder a bit), unless the TA lets me revise my topic. Which means my original request for a site is still valid, so anything you got would be grand.
Cheers!

Me too.
I mean, he's a good guy, but have you seen what the media has done to our country? I'm fairly certain he has a large part to do with that, so he should have to go.

Personally, I suggest heavy drinking to put him down. It's only fair.

Why not lump the removal of all boats as well. You could argue that the amount of water displaced by each boat has raised it this much, and the subsequent lowering from removing all boats would counteract all the additional air traffic

How much ice is in the North pole? And how much in the South? Would one's melting and subsequent decrease in displacement not counteract the other?

I'm assuming this assignment does not have to be undertaken in a serious manner?
Making a persuasive speech about absolutely ridiculous ways to counter global warming has the potential to be epic, even if whaling alone isn't a viable option. This way you could at least include whaling as a supplemental measure, or what have you. Also, for the sake of the point not being entirely exorbitant, you could use population numbers from before whaling decimated them. Using those numbers you could even portray whalers in a positive light and perhaps as unintentional heroes, exclaiming that had they not been so selfless and sacrificing, global warming would be a much more imminent threat than it currently is!

How about drilling through the crust and just turning some of the ocean into steam if there's too much water around? Granted, then you have to do something with it. I dunno what that would be.

Go with my sig and have cars power by refined human fat. India and China are developing obesity problems, maybe that will off-set their automobile usage? Anyways, I believe I later figured out my math was wrong due to a stupid error, but you basically need to figure out how much lard the average American carries around, and what the calorie content of that is compared to gasoline, then add increased fuel economy based on weight loss. . I think I figured that Rosie O'Donnell's ass could get me to Boston and back w/o my gas light coming on.

Some amazing posts in here
Man, reading through this thread has me depressed I blew this chance, there are some epic topics being tossed around ><
Sadly its too late for me to completely switch topics (I was thinking about arguing for lifting out New Jersey and moving it ontop of Nebraska to make room for rising oceans and give people a reason to go to Nebraska), we needed to survey the class earlier to cater our speech to them, and my survey was broad, but not that broad. Looks like I'll be making a serious argument against modern day conservation groups and how their methods politicize the environmental movement and turn away support.
Ah well =\

Why stop with whales? Why not dredge the whole ocean of multicellular life? We'd still get the algae for oxygen production and removal of carbon, furthermore, without anything to eat the algae, it'd be able to do that far more efficiently thus lowering the global temperature allowing the water to then re-freeze into ice caps and glaciers lowering the sea levels even more and allowing us far more land to cultivate and live on. AND we'd get to have the biggest fish-fry/clambake EVAR!

Because "lets kill all marine life!" doesn't have the same effect on most people as "whalers are good people and should be commended for their noble efforts!" Not to mention other species are actually useful; fish are fun to catch for recreation, sharks are just badass and et cetera. The only thing whales have ever given us is countless jokes about "big boned" people.

I have decided what we can do with all the resulting steam! We can use it to power huge, underwater backhoes to scoop out parts of the ocean floor. Not only would this take care of the rest of the 3 million cubic kilometers, but we could strategically place our newly acquired land throughout the Midwest thereby making the drive from coast to coast less flat and boring. That is the only reason anyone bothers traverse that barren wasteland, right?

I also think we should not serve meat in food pantries. There are plenty of stray animals, and pigeons and squirrels are widely available sources of protein.
