Subject: Entrepreneurship... Want to play a Game?
Date Posted: 08 April 2010 at 8:07am
In college my favorite class I took was an elective called entrepreneurship. This class was amazing as it really opened the students minds to making money in an unconventional way. Typically if you want to buy something you have to go get a job... Save up, and when you have enough then go buy it. So people wait to chase their dreams as they think they have to have _______ before they can start...

This class changed the way many of the participants think about money as it forced them to realize that money isn't just something that allows you to buy something. It can also be viewed as seeds.

And the more seeds you plant, the more money you can get back as you harvest those seeds.

I have always been interested in buying and selling stuff (I've had the "Free Enterprise" moniker since I was 16). I used to dumpster dive in grade school for stuff to sell in class. I went to Woodward BMX camp with a worn out bike, two bags of homemade cookies and $30. I left two weeks later with a brand new top of the line bike, tons of stickers (currency in the BMX world) and $300... All from trades I had made. One trade involved over 30 people and I had the entire trade figured out before I started the first deal. I did the whole trade with everyone involved in under 4 hours. (it took about a week to plan it all, and get verbal agreements with all parties)

I always had some money making project going. When I was 8 I was selling about $30 a week in toothpicks... that I would soak in flavors at home and sell in class. Cinnamon, wintergreen, and spearment. 3 for $.25 or 15 for $1.00. Just about every kid in school could be seen with a toothpick hanging out of their mouths.

I also started a lawn mowing service, painted numbers on curbs, sold candy, and was designing and printing t-shirts to pay for my "fun" money in college.

My birthday was a few weeks ago, and I got cash... Like most people who instantly think, "what can I buy". I thought the same thing, except my thought had a little more...

"What can I buy that I can sell, and double this money"!

So I turned that $60 into $90 in the two two weeks since, and I got to thinking. The reason that class was so good, was that we were forced into taking some of our own money and figuring a way to make money from it...

The teacher turned it into a contest. Whoever got the highest return won, and would have bragging rights.

And, man was everyone competitive to see who could "make" the most in the next two months.

Each person had to keep track of their expenses, and their profits. You were allowed to use investors, as long as you paid them back what they put in, with their promised profit.

Who ever made the most cash by the end won.

Does the T&O forum want to play?

If you want in, just post on this thread. Personally, I am going to start with $30. Because everyone can come up with $30 to mess with pretty easily. I plan on trying to make a minimum of $300 off of this $30 in the next two months. I have some idea's and I will be watching craigslist for deals that I can "turn" for a quick profit.

Nothing illegal, and keep track of all your expenses, as they come out of your profit. (just like the real world).

Some ideas are...

make and sell some artwork, food, candy, detail auto's, cut grass, paint, make a product and sell it, find something you know about on craigslist and sell it, or offer your fixing services to your friends, wash windows... The key is to make a profit and do the work yourself, or hire people to do it for you.

but, you have to document on this thread, each purchase and what you did to it. If you purchased something years ago, and now you want to sell it, you can, but the original cost goes against your profit... unless you got it for free.

Shoot, look at the garbage on the side of the road... I've found all kinds of stuff that I have sold there over the years.

So, I bring you the T&O CASH challenge.

Who is in?

I'm not particularly entrepreneurial, so I invest my money in the work of others.

Interesting concept though, and I hope to see some people get onboard to see where this goes.

I took entrepreneurship in highschool too actually, was a decent class. We had a small store set up in the school that sold basic school supplies, clothing with the school stuff on it, noisemakers for games, etc. People in the class would have scheduled times to be there and whatnot.

I almost got suspended in middle school for competing with the school store.

I had a paper route at the time so I was making about $40/week doing that. I would take that money and buy candy in bulk, your usual assortment of candy bars and chewables. Then I would sell it out of my locker for around half the absurd price the school store was selling, while still making a tidy profit. My only expense was the candy, no transportation costs since I huffied it to school and bought the candy on the way.

Eventually the principal and various clubs that got funded by the school store noticed a drop in funds and they investigated. Needless to say they found out I was dealing in the worst drug of all, sugar, at better prices so they called a meeting with my parents, the principal and I and threatened me with suspension if I didn't stop.

That sucked. I made a good profit off that stuff.

Later in college I bootlegged DVDs for $3 each. The only expense in that was a 3/time netflix subscription at $15 a month. I also bought booze for my entire floor and then some once a week and taxed that so I could drink for free and still make money on my time.

College was much less legal than my earlier dabbelings.

I'm in on the contest I just need to brainstorm to come up with ideas.

I could have made bank over the years if had I charged my friends for every single time I had to fix their computers.  I guess my liberal commie mindset was dominant even before I realized.

As far as the game goes, it seems like a fun idea, but totally not worth it, IMO.  If you make $300 in a month, that's what, at best around $10/hr and probably even less than that?  I'm good with how I spend that time now.

How much do you make now per hour? And what are your expenses now?

This is money ON top of that money, so it goes directly to the bottom line without costs associated, as they are already covered in your regular income.

Years ago the statistic was over 80% of people spend their entire paycheck with their costs each pay period.

So a minimal increase in cash monthly would equal a pretty big deal.

If you could make an EXTRA $300 per month, on top of your regular pay and costs... That would be a big deal, almost like getting a second job, as it would be pretax income. No SS medicare, or taxes taken out as this is discretionary income.

For example, I saw this on craigslist...

Now, there ain't no way that is worth $160... And GT didn't make the pro performer until 1984. (I know because I had one..., it was also called a World Tour that year and 1985).

So I called him up and asked if he was serious about selling it... The highest I would go is $50. He said, yeah, he wanted to sell it now, and I headed over there.

When I got there I was bummed, the only real part was the frame... Everything else was new garbage mongoose... (or walgoose as I call it, cause old mongooses are good).

So, I offered him what it was worth $20. and we settled on $25.

That left me $5. to buy more stuff. Picked up some Oxalic acid, (aka wood bleach) to fix this frame up... $1.00 at lowes. Bought a bag of candy which I will sell in my candy machine ($2.00 from yard sale this summer).

Yeah, I can hear you now... That bike is all rusty and worthless... Well, this one is in very good condition for being a 1988 GT Pro Perfomer / Pro Freestyle Tour.

Well worth decent money on ebay. I would guess it is worth about $75 minimum, just as a frame. ($50 profit!, which would double my investment).

Here it is during the oxalic acid bath.

Here are the results... Pre polished...

DO NOT use steel wool on chrome, it will just scratch the chrome and make it look bad. Oxalic acid is the only way, and you just mix it up, and let it soak for hours. So there is no work involved until you wipe it down with a white scotch brite pad.

Time on project so far.

Picking up the bike (I was out that way anyway...)

15 minutes.

strip down bike to frame, 10 minutes.
Making up the oxalic acid mixture and putting frame in it 10 minutes.

changing frame position during day and whiping off rust.

15 minutes.

Cost in project $26.

Now, I will take good photographs, and get the ebay listing ready. This typically takes about 30 minutes total. I think I will list it on Wed, 10 day auction to end on the following Saturday, for best results.

Bummer it isn't a better brand...

If it is early 80's it could be worth some money. But, most diamondbacks are not very collectable.

The best collectable freestyle bikes.

Hutch, GT / Dyno, Haro, Skyway, Ozone, Bully, and a bunch of specific ones.

I know GT's and Dyno's as I rode for them back in the day. But post up some pics and a serial number and I can tell you if it is worth anything.

Im at school so I cant get pics/info, but I remember a chrome gusseted frame with black/gold checker decals and the typical 80's styling.

I also gave away an old 80's style twotone silver/dark blue Haro Invert, with matching forks which had a random tube in the middle of the forks. Ring any bells?

gave away...

Yup, that is what happened to most. The invert was the low end Haro model, still a decent bike, but not worth much as a collectable as it was tri-moly.

The collectable ones are full chromoly. Like the Sport, or the best one, the Master.

The 88 Haro master is a very desireable bike, with 990 mounts on the back, and flip up pegs that went around the forks, that was the only year of that style.

Next project...

Found a Mame cabinet on Cincy craigslist. Guy said he had around $800 in it so far... Was looking for $400.

I offered $200.

It is the complete cabinet, with pull out drawer for keyboard mouse, all happ controls for two player, and ipac board.

I had an old gateway computer with monitor that I am using (the one I mentioned earlier that someone gave me because of the virus on it. Which works great now.

The system had speakers installed, and light in the top...

Got the controls working on it and it is pretty sweet. I think I will waste quite a bit of time before I finish this project.

over 4,000 games. All the great ones from the 80's as well.

I need to paint it, and get some graphics for the sides.

This is a full size arcade cabinet.

Here is a pic while I was finishing the wiring on the controls to the ipac board.

And with the computer inside the cabinet.

total cost so far...

$200

old free computer.
extra wire.
found monitor.
free mame software.

Value when finished?

Seriously.

This is good stuff, and y'all ought to give credit where credit is due.

But on subject - certainly the ability to turn $30 into $60 with a couple of hours work is an admirable trait, as is the ability to make money by a variety of means.

But none of these little money-making exercises scale, or at least not very far, and certainly not when one splits the time among a dozen endeavors.  As a matter of time investment, would not the time be better spent learning a particular skill very well, or acquiring a new and valuable skill - or at least picking one (scalable) line of business and dedicating all time to that business?

I have nothing but respect for entrepreneurs.  But at the same time (as I presume one learns in entrepreneur classes), hardcore entrepreneurs often suffer from a bit of serial-entrepreneurship ADD.  Always flitting from one undertaking to the next, driven by the energy of the moment, and rarely seeing an undertaking all the way truly to the end.

Now, if one of your serial entrepreneur efforts turns out to be Tapout gear, or Ebay - that's great.  But usually it is not, at least not without help from corporate anti-entrepreneurs.   These are the implementation guys with no imagination.  They only do one thing at a time, but they just keep doing it.  Which tends to make them very good at that one thing.

The most successful entrepreneurs, of course, combine both traits to stick with their creations.  Bill Gates, Steve Jobs - both guys who could create more from less, but they didn't mess around once they were on to something.

tl;dr = stay in school.

Sure you can sell your stuff, just read the rules as the original cost to you is the cost of the item... So "profit" would be the money you made on top of the cost. Just like the real world.

Bruce brings up an interesting point. Most people see entrepreneurship as a way to get rich.

As that is the goal of most people... to get rich.

I don't see it that way. I make good money at my "real" job. I do other things for fun. To me, finding a frame like I did last week, cleaning it up (over the weekend) and listing it this week (it is bid up to $10 so far, with 15 people watching it, and 78 views! in under 12 hours) is a blast. I really enjoy it. I can't wait to finish the arcade machine... I already have the graphics for the sides and front. Painting it is next.

Some people like to drink, or party. I like to make money. I don't even have a clue what I will spend it on, as I have everything I want, and I don't focus on what I don't have, as that will leave you in the poor house.

It is a mindset. All to often people are obsessed with getting stuff. They pay WAY to much for the stuff they want, and ignore the trader ability that can be cultivated in ourselves with a little work.

For example, I grew up with a bunch of kids who all thought outside of the box. Shoot, we helped invent Freestyle BMX. But, we weren't on the west coast, so the magazines ignored us. And yet, some of the best riders came other places in the country, and now it is a world wide sport, that brings in serious cash per year. I know one guy who made over $250,000 last year alone... And he isn't even that popular!... And owns NO business.

But, we all wanted to have fun, and that is what we got from freestyle, along the way, we used our knowledge to build companies, and products and make money to support our fun hobbies. That is all this is for me, a way to make some extra cash for fun money. I do find it interesting that so many of my friends now own companies... Which they started from something they loved. That is the key, if it isn't fun for you... you won't meet your true potential.

We all have the same opportunities, it is just a few that will spend the time, to learn something that will enable them to make serious money from that knowledge.

I make $135 an hour with my aquarium business. Could my customers get someone cheaper... Sure, but they won't know what I know, and they won't drop everything during a fish tank disaster to come save the day.

I've been doing that little business for 10 years now. Most guys charge about $40 an hour for that job...

Why do people pay me over 3X as much?

Experience, knowledge, and dependablity. And for that kind of money, I really enjoy it!

lil devil, I only deal with bmx from the 1970-1992. Anything newer than that is "new school" and not my area of experties. That is the key to being successful in selling stuff. You have to know its value, and the market.

Ebay is an excellent tool, when used correctly. It is like running a store except you don't have to hire help, and it is open 24 hours with zero work from you. A excellent way to sell your product, and get worldwide exposure. Craigslist couldn't touch that kind of response.

That`s retarded. And 48 bids is sketchy.  Why bid early when you can wait till the end to just bump er a bit?

Is it possible to sell something on there and keep bumping it up with a second account. You see someone bid on your item so you bid again knowing some other dude wants it.

Bid sniping doesn't always work for reasons explained below.

Is it possible to sell something on there and keep bumping it up with a second account. You see someone bid on your item so you bid again knowing some other dude wants it.

It is possible, but you don't want to get caught doing so.  I remember reading about a pawn shop that was doing that and they got busted big time by the state attorney general.

Personally, I look at an item, decide exactly how much I'm willing to pay for it in total, subtract shipping costs and make my bid based off of that.  If I get bid sniped, I don't care because it was more than I was willing to pay anyway.  If I get bid sniped by a seller who is bumping prices on his own merchandise that's okay to because it means I didn't get ripped off.  Furthermore, if he does it enough, he will eventually get caught.  Even if he doesn't get caught, he still has to pay the charges related to posting the item he just bought from himself.

While this leaves me open to having my bid pushed to the max by dishonest sellers, I don't really get that upset about that because I have already decided the maximum I am going to pay.  Additionally, the chance are I will never know anyway so why worry about it.  (After all, I got what I wanted for no more than the maximum I was willing to pay.)

Edited Addition:

I found this little gem in one of fe's posts and decided it needed to be seen/considered without the surrounding material.

Okay, update time, as I was on vacation last week to post a "one month in" update...

So far during this process I have made the following.

Fishtank income

$405
$205

At home bindery project done over the weekend of 5/8 (while watching movies in my theater...)

$980 wrapping fish for a direct mail campaign. (yeah someone has to put the materials into the clear plastic envelopes as they don't wrap themselves, and knowing the right people can get you great jobs like this with big payouts for only 24 hours light work). and yes, I pay taxes on all my additional income...

Bike frame
costs listing and fees $26 plus $1 for wood bleach plus sale amount of $212.50 plus $5 packing charge...
Profit of $192.

Oh, and my bag of candy, that I spent $2.00 on.

I made $9.75 in quarters.

$7.75 profit.

One month in and I have already made $1,789.75...

Now that is before taxes, which will take some of that, but still nothing to sneeze at for one month of EXTRA income on top of my regular job.

I am currently building a new rock sidewalk from my current sidewalk to my pool, so that took up my weekend time, hauling rock from my creek to the site, oh and tilling my garden, which I will plant tonight or tomorrow.

but, this week, I plan on getting to that arcade stand and throwing some paint on it to get it ready to sell... Maybe this weekend I will have time to work on that.

Oh, and what did I do with the profit?... Took the new van and the RV down to Gatlinburg for a week.

The weather was perfect for a campfire

and some scary stories. (don't worry kids, its not real...)

Speaking of "its not real". I was telling my kids some scary stories by the campfire when some other campers walked by our site.

It was at the time in the story where I shone the light on my face while making faces, and growling and making scary noises.

Evidently my kids laughing hysterically wasn't enough to persuade the passerbys of the obvious fun being had, because we all heard the father tell his teenage son very clearly...

"Don't worry son, it isn't real".

We almost died laughing, and that is our new favorite family expression.

we headed over to Dollywood.

did some ropes course (yeah it was scary to take this pic..., but don't worry, it isn't "real".) oh wait... nevermind.

This was right before I screamed and pretended to lose my balance to the horror of the people below.

and laural falls

So yeah, one month of "extra" income and I ended up with a free family vacation during the worst recession in my lifetime.

Pretty fun.

I'm sorry but, yeah . . . what?

Sometimes I have a hard time feeling justified saying I'm going camping if I bring a tent.  That's like saying sleeping in your car is camping.

It is all a matter of perspective, the RV is probably nicer than most college apartments... It has a better kitchen for sure... I should know, I gained 2 pounds on our trip.

here is a similar model but this one has a quad slide... Instead of a triple slide.

But, when you are married to a princess you can't expect her to sleep on the ground! You gotta roll with style.

You can now see why we call it the motor mansion.

I use the term "camping" Very losely.

update time...

Remember that Arcade machine I was working on back then... Well, I ended up keeping it for a year while my kids and I played it. But, once we were tired of it  I did actually sell it.

Here are the build pictures.

I printed the graphics and used double sided tape to apply them to the cabinet. Which I had painted black.

The computer I got for free out of the garbage, and I used another garbage computer that I put a larger processor in and put in enough ram to make it work fast enough for a MAME machine. Monitor was also a free find. Keyboard and mouse were free as well. (garbage)
