Ugh, Its so frustrating.
Every morning I wake up feeling out of my mind tired and disgusting, and I am at a complete loss to why, so I have come to the forum with its infinite wisdom.
I have a new, awesome temperpedic mattress. The temp in my room is always a nice 18 degrees that's around 65 for you mericans. I eat healthy, very health. Almost zero caffeine in my diet, I exercise, I run 8km 3-4 days a week, and go hiking on weekends. I sleep for 8-9 hours a night. I try to make my room as dark as possible during the night so no LEDs or humming from computers.
It was not always like this, I use to feel find when I woke up. I thought maybe I wasn't getting a deep enough sleep so i took sleeping pills for a month, and they never worked. (though one time when i was sick a took a bunch of codine cough medicine and I woke up feeling amazing) Also, I fall asleep in a matter of minutes, usally because im so dam tired. haha
anyway, anyone else have terrible problems sleeping? Anyone got some home remedies?

Sometimes complete darkness/silence is not conducive to re**edited**l sleep. Something as quiet as a white noise machine could help.

Erin and I sleep with a fan on at all times, either ceiling fan or even a small table fan on low. The white noise helps immensely.

is music no good? It needs to be white noise?
Also, could I be over sleeping? Its kind of counter intuitive, but from what i read online, 6-7 hours of sleep is the norm, could getting 8-9 be to much?

That's what I'm thinking, but I'm no doc.
Usually when I sleep about 7 hours, I feel pretty damn good, but when I get more then that (only on weekends) I need to crash for another 2 - 3 hours. Even then I wake up feeling groggy.
Besides, IIRC you're a EE, what the hell are you doing getting 8-9 hours of sleep?!

I'm not sure I can buy the whole "oversleeping" thing. I've just never understood it. Your body should know how much sleep it needs, and it should wake up when it's had enough, not keep on resting. As amazing as the body is, it should have some sort of internal clock that tells it when it's had enough rest.

That's not really oversleeping unless your body was previously acclimated to getting just 6-7 hours for a long, long time. It's possible that your body isn't used to getting that much sleep, but I'm pretty sure the signs for that are different.
Do you snore? One of the biggest concerns for snorers is that they constantly prevent themselves from entering REM cycles throughout the night, which leaves them tired no matter how much they sleep.

I can relate, my sleep is just all kinds of messed up.
I have a good mattress, I have all kinds of noise options around my room (two pc's, tv, surround sound, etc etc), I have my own window unit that covers the whole white noise / temperature elements, yet I can't sleep worth crap.
I blame mine on my job though. I work 7p-8a night shifts at work on Saturday and Sunday, then Monday morning I go to school at 9a and get home around 3:45p. So then I attempt to stay up long enough to go to sleep at a normal time so that I'm not repeating this diasaster all week, but at this point it's not working too well :P
In the past I've found the cure to this problem to be maintaining a normal wake-up time all week, including your days off. If I worked a normal job and went to work at 8am in the morning, I'd try no to deviate too far from that through the week. Seems like when I did that I slept well, and woke up on my own on time for work feeling rested.

I've heard both sides of the too much/ not enough sleep thing so I just sleep till I wake up unless I need to get up, in which case I try to get a minimum of 7 hours. More is ideal, I don't like early mornings.
White noise is a good call, might help you get more into REM sleep.
Otherwise take some melatonin. At the very least you should get some crazy dreams?

Re**edited**l?
Haha. It's "rest ful" due to the four letters in the middle of the word that are an acronym for "shut the <heck> up".

I think that's more sleep apnea than snoring

As far as noise, I think that's to each their own. I can't fall asleep with a TV or radio playing. I bought an air filter to provide a constant white noise to help me sleep, and it helps with dust too, I guess.
Also, not an expert, but I think the proper amount of sleep depends on the person. I was a 6-7 hr sleeper, but I think some people may need more, like 8-9.

White noise isn't the same as music for sleeping.

Oh god, my roommate this semester snores like you wouldn't believe. It sounds like bears and pigs fighting some epic battle on the other side of the room. I can usually sleep through anything but when he falls asleep on his back it gets challenging.
As for the OP, I know how that feels. Sometimes I sleep for 6 hours and wake up feeling good and feel like crap after sleeping for 10 hours and other times it's the other way around. I have a very irregular sleep schedule so sometimes I feel like crap no matter how much sleep I get. I haven't quite been able to pin it on any one thing but I suspect just having a regular sleep pattern would make things much better. I have also heard that anything out of the range of 6-8 hours of sleep will usually leave you feeling tired but I'm not sure I believe it as I've had different results at times. Like a few other people have said, your body probably knows how much sleep it needs for the most part. I generally only set an alarm when I need to make sure I'm awake at a certain time but otherwise I just sleep until I feel like getting up. I have noticed that on days when there's not much to do or I have to sit around for long periods of time and I'm mostly inactive I feel very tired even if I got a lot of sleep. But then if I started doing something I'd perk up almost instantly and would feel perfectly fine. It sounds like you're fairly active but there must be certain times when not much is going on. Is it then that you feel crummy or is it constantly? If you're getting a decent amount of sleep and you have a regular sleep schedule yet you still feel tired regardless of how active you are then maybe you should talk to your doctor about it. You could be sick and not realize it.

ya, its weird, most people say when they do something active it wakes them up, but that doesn't work for me.
Like take yesterday, I sleep for a good solid 8 hours, wake up, go for a 7km run, eat breakfast have a shower, then fall asleep for 3 more hours because im so tired. Even after waking up from the nap im still so tired. Oh well, I guess I just gotta suck up it.

Just a thought, but when you say you eat very healthy each day, what does your average day's worth of food look like?

I have to wonder if you're getting enough calories in a day. Fruit is a great supplement for vitamins in the morning, but it's often not enough of a carb/calorie load to set you up for the rest of the day. And for the salad, are you adding chicken or Tuna to it? Maybe you have a protein deficiency, which can manifest in sluggish muscles and a weak red blood cell count.
Unless you are vegan/strict vegetarian, in which case I can only suggest you do some serious research into the supplements required by such a diet.
There are a couple of cool websites where you can keep track of these kinds of things, I use myfitnesspal.com personally, and find it to be extremely helpful.

Do you drink caffeine after 6:00pm?
That can keep you up.
Are you guilty?
Guilty conscience is the number one reason for poor sleeping habits.
Ever since college I have been a fan of white noise.
Currently I use this.
http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Oasis-Natural-Alarm-Clock/dp/B001O04KA6/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1271101440&sr=8-7 - http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Oasis-Natural-Alarm-Clock/dp/B001O04KA6/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1271101440&sr=8-7
set on white noise. Sure I can sometimes hear "voices" in the white noise telling me to kill my cat... (lol) but really as soon as I kick it on, I am out like a light...
