I ordered a new laptop on Monday.
My original-model, 4-year-old Macbook was still working fine internally, but the battery was completely gone and the cracks in the body were getting worse from years of hard living in a backpack and field-reporting abuse.
My mom offered to help me pay for it, so that helped too.
Anyway, I was really excited when the order was placed. I got a 15-inch MacBook Pro, the one on the lower end of the processor scale. And I have a free trial through my company for Insight and FinalCut Pro.
Hooray, a laptop that can be used without being plugged in again and will have nifty video editing software.

Then, Tuesday morning, I get this:
"Apple is pleased to announce the new 15-inch MacBook Pro, featuring Intel Core
i5 processors—the fastest dual-core processors available—along with
next-generation NVIDIA graphics and a battery that lasts up to 8-9 hours on a
single charge. It sets all-new benchmarks for Mac notebooks."

Are you serious Apple? I know you are notorious for keeping updates quiet and annoying customers, but seriously, it happens to me about 12 hours after ordering something?
But wait.
I got this e-mail last night:
"Since your order has not shipped, we have upgraded it to the new 15-inch
MacBook Pro at no extra charge."

That's awesome, I was going to suggest that you could likely get the free upgrade, but they did it for you anyways. Congrats :D I'd love to upgrade, but have no reason at all to, so its just me wanting to waste money and buy shiny things.
The girlfriends Acer is dying a bit more every day, and is nearly completely finished, so she's ordering a macbook at the end of the month.

My friend predicted the release a couple days before it happened. He had happened to be surfing around the Apple store online and had some connection issues with it or something. Said he was positive the only thing that could have done it was them preparing all the new information and whatnot for the release.

The new ones look really good, I'll admit.
I won't be looking at a new (laptop, anyway) computer for a while, so I'll just enjoy the eye candy.

Not to sound like an Apple hater, but that is just silly. I know that they like to maintain secrecy about new products and new product releases, like the ipad, but keeping tight wraps under relatively minor updates to their computer lineup is just irritating.

I want an Ipod touch soon but I'm going to hold off the temptation long enough until fall when they release new ones. I'd be pissed if I got one now only to have one thats way better come out a couple months later. It might even have a camera.

Ipod touches can't really do much more than they already do.
You can already text and make phone calls with the stupid things.

Wait, so the apple store was down, and he "predicted" new products. He must be some super psychic....because that's what happens every time the store goes down.

Obviously I didn't mean anything quite so dramatic. He had just mentioned to me in passing that he thought Apple was going to release something in the coming days, and then explained to me why.
He's a HUGE apple fanboy, so he probably spends enough time on their site to even notice when the load-times are a milisecond off.

Right, but Apple's big attention getters these days is the consumer electronics. The iphone, the ipods and now the ipad. Keeping such tight wraps on laptops just doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

I don't think thats really true either, have you not seen the rapid proliferation of macbooks on campuses around the country? Sure the iPhone is huge, but not all they're about at all. Apple is a computer company first, mobile second. Sure its a big deal, but apple is a master at controlling their coverage, and its worked out tremendously for them. Why would they show their hand when they don't need to?

No, I'm not saying that Macs and Macbooks aren't successful. But they aren't the "hot" products at Apple anymore.
There is a difference between buying an ipod a week before they come out with a new color, and buying a $2000 laptop, only to find out that you didn't sufficiently scour the rumor sites, and your machine is a generation behind.

You wouldn't be equally peeved if you bought an iPhone the day before the 4G came out?....

Along with their stubbornness, their strict secrecy with updates for high-priced items are one of the reasons Apple annoys me.
I agree with Shub to an extent.
If I buy an iPhone and they drop the update a few days later, it sucks but oh well. It's a little different if I just dropped $1,700 on a notebook.

Not as bad to me at least..the iphone updates weren't that major from version to version. I know the Gen1 to 3G was a biggish deal, but the 3GS was rather minor, and most people upgrade around their cell phone plans anyway...most of all, it's still not the investment (time or money) of a laptop.

I doubt that it has worked as tremendously as you say.
Has it hurt them? Maybe not. But I also doubt it has helped.
There are very few people out there, I would reckon, who will drop $1,700 on a notebook, and then buy another if Apple updates the product without notice within three weeks.
Rich dumb hipsters, maybe.

How has it not? Apple keeps the rumour gears turning by releasing no, or very little info at a time. They keep a lid on all possible leaks, and are known to spread false leaks to determine where any potential leaks come from. I'm sure you've all seen the product of this: free hype. Rather than putting out photos and releases on their upcoming line, they don't say a word and let us nerds speculate and wonder what they're releasing next. Rather than trying to convince us it's worth talking about, we talk about it by choice out of curiosity. That's the entire point, they generate easy, free coverage/ hype both online and offline, by doing nothing.
It's very intentional, and its how they want it to work, and it does.

Meh. I still don't even own an iPod.
Was given a macbook by my company when I joined, and I like it, a lot, but for what I do a PC is more practical and cost effective. Just got a new Dell, still have the macbook though. They're neat, but I don't feel like i can jump on the "APPLE GREAT, EVERYTHING ELSE BAD" wagon.

Computers are a big investment. Businesses schedule hardware updates, and budget around them. Most people have to save for quite a while to purchase new computers. I think at some point, the Apple hype machine is a disservice to customers when they keep computer updates secret.
If they wanted to keep major updates, like when they redesigned the cases of the Macbook Pros, I'd be more forgiving. But again, I'm talking about regular, scheduled hardware refreshes.
For the most part, Apple's plan isn't working. Market share has leveled off recently. For the most part, people are only buying new Mac books to replace old Mac Books. They aren't converting new customers like they were.

Ah, my mom recently had the same thing. Her boss is CONVINCED that windows running on a mac is completely different and none of the files will work on a pc. I've tried many times to explain that is IS windows on a pc.

If the i-5 chips perform similarly to the i-7 I have currently, you'll be very pleased with the horsepower in your laptop. Congrats to Apple for FINALLY upgrading to the newer chips.
I'd still prefer ATI graphics.

Easier. Installing an app on OS X generally consists of mounting a disk image, and dragging the app to your applications folder. There are some that use installers, but a lot don't. It's just as easy though.

If you can take anything from this thread, I'm probably the most anti-fanboy Apple user you can find.
Their sales practices, marketing practices, etc., piss me off to no end. As do their hardcore users and fans.
I can put aside that anger because I like the product a lot.
