Im sure all or most of you heard about the NYC bombing attempt.
TL;DR person with little explosive know-how rigged a bomb to detonate in a parked car in Times Square. This is the second "scare" in a few years, the first was an abandoned van full of scarves.
Solution to problem: no parking in or near times square. Thoughts?

We could also try stopping men that are running from smoking vehicles...

The first scare was actually this past New Year's Eve.
Apparently the van was parked out front of the building of whoever produces South Park, or something like that.
They're currently looking for a white male (I assume they have a better description than that) based on some security camera footage.
Either way, this wouldn't have been a particularly effective bomb, although I'm sure it would have done significant damage, given the number of people in Time's Square.
My guess is that it started smoking and the guy hopped out, so the vehicle probably wasn't left at its intended target, but it's anyone guess.

Close outside the Viacom HQ, apparently. They own Comedy Central.
It'll be very interesting indeed if that turns out to be the case.

I'm surprised it took this long for a thread to pop up.
They said the bomb had non-explosive fertilizer and a Pakistani group claimed it was theirs. Claiming a failure.
I'd go along with the parking ban. Simple cost.

As MeanMan said, pparently there was a gun cabinet full of fertilizer. Now, I'm not a demolitions expert or anything, but I wold have gone with something, I dunno, less jury-rigged?
Perhaps that's the difference between myself and would-be-terrorists.

Oh, fertilizer is a great bomb ingredient.
But why a gun cabinet? I can think of a lot of things that are much more transportable and easier to find than a gun cabinet.

I shudder at the thought of a van packed full of c4 exploding in the middle of times square... Though that would be hard to get a hold of. They did that cement truck on mythbusters full of c4 and look at what that did.

There must be a lot of conflicting reports about this. What I saw on the news said it was a bucket of fireworks stuck between 2 gasoline cans, with 2 propane tanks in the back of the truck. This really is janky, propane tanks have burst discs just like paintball tanks, the things would just depressurize if overheated instead of a rupture and explosion.
You'd get a hell of fire, but no explosion.

a lot of cities in europe don't allow parking in or near the center of the city. of course it was originally designed like that so it would be a nice place to walk around, but its basically two fold in this case.
as for getting a van full of C4, all you need is a nut with the anarchist cookbook or a disgruntled, seasoned, army engineer (preferably sapper) and poof, you can make as much C4 as you want.

That would suck pretty hard. I actually watched that mythbusters scene on youtube because it sounded sweet. I can't imagine this happening in the middle of a busy city.
I'm not sure how some sources are reporting a gun locker filled with fertilizer and others just a bunch of fireworks and propane tanks. Here's what http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/05/01/new-york-city-police-close-times-square-investigation/ - one article says was found:
Fox News wrote:
Investigators removed three propane tanks, fireworks, two filled
5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical
wire and other components from the back of the Nissan Pathfinder, Police
Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. A black metal box resembling a gun
locker was also recovered and will be detonated off site, he said. |
And http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/03/nyregion/03timessquare.html - another :
NY Times wrote:
http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/k/raymond_w_kelly/index.html?inline=nyt-per - Raymond
W. Kelly , the New York City police commissioner, said on Sunday that
the materials found in the Nissan Pathfinder — gasoline, propane,
firecrackers and simple alarm clocks — also included eight bags of a
granular substance, later determined to be nonexplosive grade of http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/f/fertilizer/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier - fertilizer ,
inside a 55-inch-tall metal gun locker. |
Seems like it was actually a combination of both.

Yeah, as mod98 said, it was both.
I can't imagine the propane tanks would be all that dangerous. I'm sure the fragmentation from a real ANFO bomb would cause a ton of injuries in Times Square, but since they apparently weren't bright enough to rig that either, well, thank God for stupid terrorists.
Unless I'm missing something, I don't see how this kind of thing can really be stopped. There's really no way to prevent people from driving through Manhattan, it would kill New York (although perhaps it would simply lead to a greater amount of public transportation, which might be good). The only thing that will help prevent this is first, keeping people from developing the knowledge to effectively create a bomb, and second, to keep some seriously close tabs on the people who might use these weapons. I just don't see how it's more likely, rather than less likely, that someone will slip through the cracks in that system.

seems like the best way to combat this would be to up the number of K9 units to sniff out bomb making materials and the like. i think the training put into it would be well worth it.

I don't think that would be a particularly viable solution. It would mean stopping literally hundreds of thousands of cars a day so dogs could check them out.
They city is planning on having sniffers within it's downtown security network.
I guess I should have mentioned this: I don't know what the difference in actual effectiveness of these two systems would be. I have the feeling that part of stopping cars and subjecting them to a dog's inspection will make that method a lot better, but it's not exactly a subject I'm an expert on.
I'm not a huge fan of Big Brother, but I think I can live with it in Manhattan, to be honest. I'm sure I'd be far less psyched if I lived there, but, I don't. I prefer not to be bombed while I'm going to a Broadway show and Tony D'napoli's.

not to stop cars and search, but to walk up and down blocks to sniff around. dog sniffs something suspicious, they investigate the parked car...the car that was used in this instance was just parked, and it was parked in a weird place, furthering the suspicion.
i understand to stop cars to let K9 units check it out wouldn't do much to help; if anything the most effective way to look for materials that way would be to set up a traffic control point to check ID's and check out the car. either stop random cars, or pending on the traffic flow all the cars on that roadway. problem is it would cause a lot of traffic problems and people would see it as the government stepping in too much, but thats the price of safety sometimes.

The problem is if you know what you are doing, there needs to be very little "official" involvement in procuring the explosives, boosters and accelerators.
This one sounds horribly jury rigged but then you always have to start somewhere. If they don't catch you before you get above the learning curve, bad things could happen.
They monitor things like hydrogen sales because it is very useful as a booster. With the right equipment and a tap you get hydrogen. You can bake explosives. You can get or make fertilizer.
Bombs don't always have to be squibs.

win!
obviously the terrorist wasn't home schooled...
And banning parking will just make things worse. You do realize that is how stuff is delivered to the city right? by parking on the street and wheeling in the products...
Major economic impact if that were stopped.
Stuff happens. Catch the bad guy and light him on fire right where the bomb would have gone off, with his family burned in front of him first...
Then, others will think twice before trying something like this in the future...

Depends on whether or not you like either hockey team. If you don't, you'd do more harm to them by ruining their golf clubs than their hockey sticks. They get more annual use.
