Subject: I need a few opinions

Okay last year around this time I weighed about 183-85 pounds. I now weigh about 155. I don't do any exercising or sports or any physical activity. I have worked out off and on the past year but that was only the months of August and March. I am wondering how I lost so much weight without doing anything. I have been dieting the past year (reduced calorie diet). I have also noticed that I started to lose most of my weight in February when I first met my girlfriend, I did (used to) feel super self-conscious about my weight and I felt that I needed to lose some. But I didn't work out or run or do anything.

Now I can barely keep down a full meal and its starting to scare me. I want to eat but I get full too fast and only end up eating half of what everyone else eats and I lost about 5 pounds in the last 2-3 weeks. Last night I went to an awards ceremony for my girlfriend (she sings at her school's arts program) and we went to a fancy restaurant called Texas de Brazil which is all you can eat meat and salad (very good by the way). After I ate (which wasnt much compared to other people) I started to feel sick and I threw it up in the bathroom. About an hour later I had a massive stomach ache and it felt like my stomach was constricted to the size of my fist. What a waste of 38 bucks.

I'm wondering what the hells wrong with me and if I should seek professional help. If so, who should I see to help? My girlfriend's dad is an MD but I'm wondering if I should skip him and go to a specialist...

/INB4 clingy, leave your girlfriend, insecure... ect.

ALSO: I'm about 5'11"-6'0" tall.

Another thing. In the beginning of March I started to retake my acne medication after a month of not taking it, and about 3 days later I severely lost my appetite and I only ate a bite of food and I was full. We discovered that loss of appetite was a side effect of the antibiotic and I stopped taking it. I wonder if the effect of that drug is still affecting me?

Your stomach gets bigger or smaller based on your eating habits. The proper size of your stomach should be the size of your closed fist.

That is the amount of food that your body needs per meal.

Not much huh?

Americans way overeat (myself included) and many eat two to three times the food they should in a meal... And over time, their stomach will increase in size to accomidate that, over time, the weight will be added to them.

Sounds like you got your stomach down to a smaller size, and then overate.

look at your portions for a while, but if you keep chucking definitly see a doctor, as it could be something else.

If you eat the size of your fist, and are fine... I wouldn't worry about it, you may have just gotten some bad food and your system rejected it.

I probably did overeat but it's the rapid weight loss that i'm concerned about.

Posted By: FreeEnterprise

5 pounds in 2 to 3 weeks isn't what I would consider rapid...

You stated you just got a girlfriends. so your "schedule" is totally different, and time you used to spend eating is now probably spend doing other stuff...

If it keeps up, then it might get worrysome, but I wouldn't worry yet.

Rofl I went through a really similar thing, I could barely eat anything without feeling full/sick and I was already retardedly skinny as it was. My advice, work gradually. Get your eating habits back into a healthy level, but if you try and rush it, you're just going to make things worse.

Wow, this thread is full of bad advice.

If you have insurance that allows you to skip a PCP and go straight to a specialist, schedule an appointment with a board certified gastroenterologist. This could be the symptoms of something serious including chronic appendicitis, chronic gastritis, parasitic infection, or a similar serious and potentially fatal affliction.

If you can't get right in with a GE. Specialist, you need to go see your PCP (primary care provider) who should either be a general practitioner or internal medicine MD. Do not wait. Do it now.

^^^ What Tallen said.  I had a troop that suffered a 45 lb weight loss over about 8 months.  A junior NCO let me know about it* and I ordered the troop to the clinic.  I don't remember what they diagnosed exactly, but it was serious and required surgery fairly soon thereafter.

*I was fairly new to the section and was unaware of the magnitude of the weight loss.

There are a lot of G.I. issues which can present asymptomatically. 10% of appendicitis cases don't present pain, swelling, or other symptoms until the appendix bursts and you wind up with the symptoms of sepsis which is far more serious. See a doctor. Don't try to diagnose yourself. It could be nothing, but more than likely, it's something big and really bad for you.

Better safe than sorry. You're still on your dad's engineer and canada insurance so get to the doc and get it looked at. I had a ruptured spleen due to a similar (but more whorish (high five) issue).

Docs are needed. You may be put on restriction but who cares. Just get better and well.

self diagnosing is nothing more then a great way to add stress to your situation...

yes it could be bad, it could also be nothing, googling a few symptoms doesn't prove anything... just chill out till you see the doctor.

Also, Rofl, self diagnosis is a bad plan. You'll just end up thinking you have cancer or something. Don't dwell on it until you hear from a doctor.

They certainly do, but really, their symptom checker is more of a tool to get you to go to the doctor rather than find out what you have. If you look, most of the symptoms say "Seek medical help immediately" if they could even remotely be dangerous. Besides, without running a battery of tests, you can't really tell what you have. Elevated counts in your TBC and other lab tests are how they figure out what you have rather than just looking at how the problem presents itself physically these days. If I'd gone to the ER with what I had last year about 10 years ago, I'd have left minus my appendix. But due to the fantastic advances in lab tests and imaging, I wound up not going into the OR which is a good thing. You want to avoid the OR as much as possible because you can die on the table even for the most routine of outpatient surgeries.

Go see a doc, preferably a gastroenterologist (one that specialized in the GI tract). If you can't get directly into a gastroenterologist, do NOT go to the ER... don't waste your time or money on something that any Primary care doc can help with. Go to a local clinic down the road that has a doctor (not a PA or NP) and lay it out.   Take whatever info the doc may give and go see a second doctor... don't base any decisions off of just a single doctor.

Although it could also be psychogenic in origin and you might have to see a psychologist instead to see if it's a "learned" habit from something such as stress.

Im 6'1'' and stay around 150 regardless of habits. Though i should weigh ~180, my metabolism and lack of ability to gain muscle mass prevents it.

Id be worried myself if i started losing weight fast and got sick everytime i ate. Definitely seek professional help.

My girlfriend's dad is an MD and he talked to his buddy today and they're going to take some blood-work and do an ultrasound on my GI tract. If they find anything with the ultrasound they will give me a CT scan or an MRI. blood-work should find problem though, if there is any. This will be Saturday.

It could be stress too though. A lot of stuff has been happening lately and I am constantly worrying about stupid crap. I think that was mostly why I had the massive stomach pain Thursday night. I should have taken it easy after I barfed but stress combined with something else after we left the restaurant made my stomach tense up really bad. But that doesn't explain the weight loss and I'm still going to get checked out.

How old are you?

My older brother is 6' 5" and hasn't been above 175 in his life, and he's 25, so it may last you quite a while, but at the same time, around 20 most people are able to add mass if they're actually working out regularly and eating well.

Okay I went to the doctor today and got an ultrasound and an x-ray. No tumors or anything like that.

That was the scariest moment of my life when I was laying on the x-ray table, not knowing if they found anything or not.

They are going to give me enzyme pills to help with my digestion and I should be able to get my appetite back.

Its going to take a while to be relieved.

Reading this makes me want to mail you a sandwich. Well, it makes me want somebody else to get you some food. If I get a sandwich, I'm eating it.

I'm about 5'11" and got up to 185 when I was working out on and off and I was in decent shape. Then I stopped working out and dropped to 165. Just joined the gym again though and hopefully I'll get my weight back up and look better than before. I never had a severe loss of appetite like described in the OP but obviously I did eat less when I was less active. During one summer in high school I would play soccer for like 5-8 hours nearly every day and I would eat like an animal. Since I was active I didn't get fat though. Once I stopped playing that much, I started eating much less but didn't feel sickly or anything.

6'5" and I hover between 195-210. I'm generally pretty broad shouldered and chested, but most people consider me thin.

Much better than my high school size of 6'5" and 145. *shudder*

I'm actually developing a little stomach fat, and it's making me paranoid. Not enough that the outside observer would notice, but enough of that I'm being a woman about it. A little extra diet and excercise should be fine....

So yesterday I went to a wedding and I ate a bit then I started feeling nauseous and chucked in the bathroom, and there was some liquid red in it... I didn't eat anything red. So I went back to the place and took my pills and slept. Today I didn't eat too much (I ate a full pancake for breakfast!), but tonight my dad and I went to Red Lobster and I got King Crab legs so I ate a whole salad, half the legs, and 2 full glasses of coke. Huge improvement so I'm thinking the pills are really working! Smile

I actually kind of like the size that I'm at now (I'm now a small for the first time since I was 10!). The only problem is that even the pair of jeans I got like a month ago are sagging like crazy and i have to keep them from falling down. The thing is, I'd like to gain a little weight but I don't want it in fat, I want muscle. This summer I'm thinking about getting a personal trainer at the gym and getting toned up, I don't really have the will-power to do it my self so I think it'll be my best bet.
