I used to play YEARS ago, sold my guns, both of which had response triggers, then eventually bought one on ebay with a response trigger for the rare occasion i might play. well, i took it out yesterday, and i was having a ton of problems getting it to fire even half way reliably. I want to remove the response trigger so i can just do single shots and not worry about it. its been so many years since i installed a response trigger. can i just remove it, or were there factory parts that were swapped out or modified in order for the RT to function?
i'm going to take the gun apart and clean the hell out of it and oil it up before i do anything, but i'll probably still end up removing the RT.

I don't know how old your "older 98C" is so this may not apply. On the first 98Cs, a replacement power tube had to be installed for the response triggers. This does not mean you need a new power tube though; it is just an answer to your question above. What you will need is a screw to block off the opening where the front fitting is removed from the marker.* I do not know what size/thread it is; however, if you remove the air fitting and take it to a hardware store you may be able to find a thread that matches. It is not necessary to remove the internal parts of the response trigger in the grip but if you leave them in place you should use some tape or something to block the hole where the external fitting was removed from the handgrip. (Just to keep debris out.)
*A screw just to do this used to come with the r/t kits.
