One of my step-sons ex girlfriends/still friends passed last sunday evening. I knew this young lady, a bright and shining star.
The evidense is as follows, she was southbound on 96th street and was in the middle of typing a text message and blew through the stop sign on US 6 and was center punched in drivers door. I hate to be course but the EMT's needed a spatchula to remove the remains. Step-son is devistated, community is devistated, but the message is clear. Put down the damn cell phone while you drive, NOTHING is more important than driving at that point in time. She was a local, knew where she was and the cell phone took her last priority, these phones are a curse on our culture.

yeah, i don't think there's a state left that doesn't require hands free devices of some sort. although on the flip side a few years back, some guy actually stopped to talk on his phone (in the shoulder lane) and got crushed by a tractor trailor. phones CAN be dangerous if used while driving

I had no problem texting while driving when I had a real phone. Touchscreen is pretty much impossible and I don't do it.

We had a simliar situation recently. Well known recent graduate home from college. News story said she slammed into the back of a semi that was stopped at an intersection. Middle of the day, no adverse conditions, on a road she drove nearly every day, no signs of braking. it was never publicly stated, but they started running PSA's the same day about texting/talking/driving. And even ran a story immediately following explaining the dangers of texting and  driving on the news.  Sad really.

I used to text while driving but after losing a couple of fellow students because of it I no longer do so, and when I am in the car I usually get on my friends for doing so as well. I don't know if there is a way to prevent it other than tickets, but that doesn't even seem to stop people.
