Just ordered a safety razor off of Amazon. For those of you who are unfamiliar, here's a picture of the one I snagged:
I have a buddy that uses one similar to this. I asked him why the hell he shaves with it (his looks like its literally from the 1930's). He said he only spends about 10 bucks a month on razor blades for it, much cheaper than buying disposable razors. I gave his razor a shot. I cut my face twice, but it was the best shave I've had in a long while. I went online to further research safety razors. Little did I know there's some kind of underground safety razor cult out there. Not that I want to be a part of it, I just figured I'd give it a shot. If it really is the last razor I'll buy, it will be worth it. If not, back to my disposable, no big deal. So does anyone else shave with these things? I'll post an update when it comes, along with any battle wounds should I attain them. |

The only reason modern razors with disposable blades / disposable razors are so popular is because they are easy and simple to use. Safety razors are safer than cut throat razors, but they aren't as easy to use as "modern" rozors. They do give better shaves than more advanced razors, but require more work/concentration to use. I use a Merkur HD open-comb and either Feather blades from Japan or Merkur super platinum blades from Germany. ------------- <Removed overly wide sig. Tsk, you know better.> |

Ditto. Granted, I shave enough to where a 4pack lasts me a few months, so it's like $5 a month on blades. And I also look for when they are on sale. -------------

I switched from the Fusion to the new Schick Hydro. Hydro blades are CHEAP on Amazon. I love the Hydros so far. -------------

I use a Merkur as well, my advice would be to go to Amazon or another shaving site and order a sample pack of blades to find out what works for you (I ordered a 60 pack for like 15 bucks?), what works well on Tallen's hair and skin might not work as well for you. I order my stuff from classicshaving.com, their house brand shave soap is decently priced and works great for me. Don't forget a decent badger brush and some soap.

I use a Mach 3. I would like to use a straight razor, or 'saftey razor' but I dont feel like hitting a vein by accident. -------------

Just bought a Gillette Proglide for 10 bucks. Shaved with it once, pretty good, but could just be because it was a new blade.
I want a straight razor, theres a shop in the mall that sells them, i might pick one up and slice my throat when i try to shave for the first time. ------------- ///AMG What? |

Tallen - I bought a 30-pack of feather blades when I purchased my Merkur. From the reviews I read they are one of the top brands. Cheap too, I think I paid like 10 bucks on Amazon for 30.
Dave - I was about to get a badger brush and some good shaving soap, but I'm going to wait until after this deployment. I'd rather not be the jerk-off that takes 30 minutes to shave while everyone else in my berthing is trying to shave/hygeine at the same time. However I will definitely check out that site...added to favorites! I'm actually a bit surprised there's some safety razor shavers out there...well Tallen didn't really surprise me since he's done everything at least twice in his old age  .

I have never taken that much pleasure/care in shaving to justify changing my razor. Fusion for me. Elictric razors are terrible. I got one that cost about £80 and now I only use the trimmer for my man garden. |

| I have a braun 3 series that I use when I don't have time for a blade. When I do have time, I use a Mach 3 that works well. I thought about getting a safety razor, but don't want to chance it in sensitive areas. I only go through a blade about every 2 or 3 months, so cost isn't much of an issue. |

I changed from an electric to a face scraper and was amazed at the difference. I'm fairly certain there would be a similar difference bewteen a disposable nd a safety, but couldn't be bothered.
