So I went to see Kings of Leon in concert last night. I have to say, not being the world's biggest Kings of Leon fan, it was actually a great show. They're far more interesting live than on album, IMO.

The biggest surprise for me was the Whigs. I've never listened to them before, in fact I had barely heard of them, but they blew me away. They were the pre-opener opener, and unfortunately very few people showed up to hear them. And those that were standing around down front were pretty much just texting and conversing with each other while these guys were putting on a great high energy show. They reminded me of the Rolling Stones alot as far as stage energy and retro vibe. I'll be legitimately buying their stuff.

The Black Keys were the Black Keys, I don't guess they really differ too much from show to show. Sounded great, but don't go see them expecting White Stripes-level showmanship. They is what they is I guess.

I'll try and get a few of the clips I recorded up to YouTube so I can link them here, but here's some of the other live stuff from the Whigs (no clips from last night yet from anyone)

They performed this song with soooo much more energy in Dallas, it's almost a shame to use this as an example.

Nearly everything is better live. Except the Mars Volta in my experience.

RHCP opener, if I recall?

I thought TMV were crap.

I saw them last weekend. The Whigs definitely were surprisingly good, best opening band I've seen in a long time. Personally I was there for the Black Keys, I wish they would've played longer. Kings of Leon were soooo much better than when I saw them a few years ago, they appear to have gotten used to being an "arena" type band.

Man, I remember when a good 80% of this forum were militant TMV supporters. Glad that has passed.

Yep, opened for RHCP and essentially just had an 8 man "who can play loudest" contest. I've heard good reviews of their shows before, but the one I saw was seriously AWFUL. RHCP kicked ass though

The band I can't get into is the Flaming Lips. Maybe I just haven't heard the right music, but all I ever hear is OMG TEH FLAMING LIPS R TEH MOST GREATEST BAND OF TEH 20TH SHENTUREE...and I'm not seeing it. Maybe some Lips fans on here could suggest the appropriate music Wink

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt 1
Do You Realize??
She Don't Use Jelly
Fight Test

If you can't get into any of those, trying to listen to them will be futile.
TMV - I still listen to them... except when I'm driving in an unfamiliar area, because that music makes being lost incredibly frustrating. The concert DVDs I have of them seem pretty incredible too.

EDIT: Also check out Dead Confederate, they sound kinda like the Whigs and are freaking incredible. Best show I've been to in awhile.

Just say them live last week. Seriously, the BEST concert I've ever been to in a long time. Look them up on youtube, they have an extremely good stage presence.

Yeah, I saw the same show in Ottawa.

Once RHCP came on they just riffed for ten minutes or so, then over the course of a minute or so the chords morphed into the opening of 'can't stop'. The crowd all realized it at pretty much the same time and we went nuts.
