Hi, I am looking at buying 2 paintball guns for my boys – who are 12 and 13 and excited about getting into it. We just spent a day enjoying A5 and 98s at a paintball field near us. But I am confused – which to buy? I look at the Tippmann Carver/Tango on and think – good, light and customizable (Add a response trigger, longer barrel and double trigger) and it is in good shape. It reads that it is simpler, which is upside, because it will be easier to field clean. But I am told that the quality is not as good by the local store - who is a Tippmann warranty/reseller location. Made in China - and definitely not comparable to the A5/98. But covered by Tippmann's great warranty and service. So I look at the A5 and the 98, and honestly, I am confused. I try to figure out how to compare them all - and what makes one different than the other - and cannot. Tippmann does not have what I would expect on a purchasing site, some type of clear matrix comparing one to the other. In the end, I boil it down to the fact that the A5 has a cyclone feader and the 98 has response/ACT which kind of does the same thing.So, from all you paintball experts who have been doing this for years, any help and insight would be deeply appreciated so that I can make the right choice for the boys - and in understanding the difference.

Well, The Sierra One/Alpha Black/Carver are a 98 Custom in disguise. Same internals, different body. ACT is not a cyclone feeder. A cyclone feeder feeds paintballs into the marker, and ACT is there to try to prevent the bolt moving foward and pinching the ball, and breaking it.
The A5 is similar in design to the 98 Custom, but with no ACT and a cyclone feeder. I dislike ACT, as it is quite pointless.
I say get your kids a 98 Custom. Its what most paintball players start with, its simple, light, and still made in the USA. My first marker was a 98 Custom, older design with less bells and whistles.
Although, ideally, bring your kids to a proshop and have them play around with each of the markers to see what they like best. They will probably pick the Sierra One as it is the gaudiest of them all marketed towards a COD generation.
The new Gryphon might not be a bad idea, but I dont like Chinese markers. -------------

| a spyder mr1 would be a great beginners since it has a longer barrel on it than the tippmanns, but it does not like being upgraded internally and their are few external upgrades besides barrels for it. but a tippmann will take any upgrade you can get for it, so i guess it boils done to just a marker that will work, IE spyder mr1 for aruond $1000 new which will last as long as a tippmann without really being able to upgrade. or being able to fully deck it out with anything you want for some more money |

I would defiantly recommend the tippmann Seiara one/ Project Salvo depending where U live . All the gun is is a 98c with a very nice body with shroud and 6 position collapsible and folding stock. This gun is perfect for beginners and is made to look like a AR15 military rifle The only downside to this gun is that it is one the heavier side weighing 4.73 pounds without the tank I personally don't have the gun but have done plenty of research on the marker. The Project Salvo/ Seiara One should retail for about $170 I myself play scenario woods-ball and this is the perfect gun for my taste I am getting the marker this weekend and plan on picking up a cyclone feed system and the e-trigger down the road If you are looking for a cool gun look wise to give your kids i would defiantly recommend this gun It is also tippmann so you can never really go wrong.
