How has your season gone? Ohio gun opened Monday. Missed a nice buck Tuesday, bagged a nice doe last evening around 4 pm.

Another one for the freezer. I'm happy with it.

Already done, 234lb dressed out 8pt, corn fed big guy. 1871 H&R Buffalo Rifle 45/70, full 70gr charge(commercial rounds are only loaded with 55gr), 405gr bullet, 1rd, @70meters, dropped on the spot, severed spine right behind skull.
Brother in Law dressed it, steaks, chops and a lot of sausage.

Too bad I can not eat any, gives me the trots real bad anytime I do.

Sounds like a hell of a round.

Ohio is shotgun only, so I used a Remington model 1100 12 ga, with a Hastings slug barrel. 2 3/4 Hornady SST slugs. 2000 fps with a slug. Put a pretty nice hole in it.

I never was one to hunt. Not because of any objections to killing anything.

Just in the fact that you have to get up at the asscrack of dawn, and then sit in a stand for hours and hours not doing anything.

If I'm getting up that early for an outdoor activity, it's going to be fishing.

I can walk around on the boat a little. I can have a conversation with someone. If the fish are not biting, I can drive around to another side of the river. I can change lures, casting styles, etc. Plus there is the challenge of the fish being in another dimension as you, whereas you can see and point at the deer.

That's not to diminish hunting at all. I'd just much rather fish. Which I am planning on doing sometime next week up in the panhandel.

My grandfather is going up to south Alabama to deer hunt here soon. He usually brings back some decent meat. I usually get the chops and hind roasts, as that is what nobody else in the family wants.

Chop those up into some mean chili cubes.

I have always used 45/70 for deer, I refuse to chase one around till it bleeds out. Between my 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Carbine and the long barreled Buffalo rifle have a talley of 12 since I started hunting again.
I hand load for the Buffalo rifle, the 55gr charge is mandatory for the trapdoor though. Will not take the greater pressure of the 'infantry' charge.

H&R puts out a 12ga slug shotgun with a rifled barrel, and in 3in Mag. Special 'smooth' slugs can be hotloaded and you basically have this big 'rifle'. I have the reciever just have not got the barrel yet.

We're allowed to shoot does as well here, and I've let a TON of those walk by so far. I've watched two smaller ones, 4/6 point. If I don't see anything bigger soon, I'll probably take a couple of young bucks for the meat.

Also, I don't like shotgun hunting for deer. 30.06 or .308 all day.

I agree. I have a .30-06 for hunting Michigan and PA. As for Ohio, I'd rather use my muzzleloader than a shotgun, but that's another story.

Missed a large coyote this morning. Haven't seen a deer yet this season, but I've only been out twice.

The only real hunting I've ever done is upland game bird.

Don't know if I'd have the patience for deer.

Struck out.

Was out Thanksgiving morning, and the following Friday, My brother in law and I were out all this past weekend. He spotted a button buck and a large doe that woke him up just after first light, they'd winded him and were making fast tracks out of the area, he never got a shot.

Tracked a bear for a while, but didn't get far. There's still a week left in NY, but I'm not going to get any more time to get out.

Fun note, it was 14 degrees this morning when he and I went out.

Don't care that I saw nothing. I needed to get out. Badly.

My rifle of choice: Ruger M77 in 30.06 with 180g winchesters. She's a nice, light rifle, but she's an ass kicker in terms of recoil.

I'll be heading up to Irons, Michigan for the last few days of Michigan muzzleloader later this month. Excited. I love it up there. Right by Stealth, if I'm not mistaken.

Probably won't hunt this year, I just haven't been in the mood. Plus, I don't really eat venison, so it seems like a waste.

I really want to try coyote hunting, though.
