I feel like a hypocrite on this one.

I have long been angry with Wikileaks, and seen them as detrimental to the efforts in the Middle East. Im all for revealing things like Tinamen Square, but releasing info that does nothing to agitate other countries without really helping anyone... not so much.

Its some scary crap. When reading the article all I keep seeing is 'yep, China does that'.

Im all for Wikileaks to get slapped around until they become responsible... but this screams "1984", "North Korea" and "China".

Edit: I wish Wikileaks would post the stuff about the UFO's in the cables. I would consider Assange a hero if he published all of the data on JFK.

I'm strongly opposed to Wikileaks' release of diplomatic cables and military information from democratic states- but I'm also amused by how so many people suddenly cringe when the shoe's on the other foot.

Yup, he actually said that.

I'm not sure Assange is doing enough good that I care.

As a general method of dealing with people disseminating government information, this one reeks, though.

As long as it's all truthful unaltered information, he can post whatever government related information he feels like as far as I'm concerned.

And unclassified. Doing so used to be called journalism. I don't know what it is anymore.

As I said before, all or nothing. Bias of omission would be cried out constantly if he picked and chose which items to release. Everyone wants transparency (or ideally should) but then whines when it happens.

Pretty much summed up what I was going to say.

Except it's not unaltered, it's classified, and it's dangerous.

Citations on the current batch of stuff, or things since the helicopter video, being altered?

Where those supposed to be connected?  Or are you saying that the combination of those three things is why it's bad?

I don't know to what extent it's actually altered (having only seen media reports, rather than the actual files.)

Now let's start the debate of whether something should be classified or not, and so forth.

Yeah, while were at it lets post the nation's nuclear launch codes and all of the passwords to military installations, or all security codes for all banks in the country... nothing should be classified huh?

Ugh I just had this exact same conversation with someone. Things like nuclear codes are entirely unrelated, and have nothing to do with what wikileaks does.

How is it unrelated to wikileaks? I'm pretty sure wikileaks will post any classified info they can get. Maybe not nuclear codes, per say, but other classified information could be in jeopardy such as nuke locations, warship locations, or other sensitive data.

How do we know that Wikileaks doesn't have strategic military information like that, and they don't post it?

I think this point is pretty interesting.

Always remember your position in this episode. We don't know nearly enough to have an educated opinion. The only info I have on this is what I get from the media (trusted much?) They only know what the powers that be want them to know and we get told even less. (Citation is non existant)

(bearing in mind I am very drunk and after repeated failed attempts to make myself a tinfoil hat I have decided to post anyway)

ps. I don't know what I mean by "The powers that be"
