There are tiny pieces of crystalized frozen water falling from the sky. Right now.

Is this supposed to happen?

What does this mean? Is this the end of the world?

I'm hiding in the pantry closet typing this.

Help me.

There are tracks, somehow she missed the road by 12.5", took the driveway, and ended up there. i drug it 3.5', thats why there are no tracks. she had to call a wrecker to get the thing out. look farther to the left and you'll see em.

Behind it is my driveway, the road is to the left of it.

What is amazing to me is how people completely freak out when driving in the snow...

I grew up in NC and when they forecasted snow, everyone would rush to the grocery to get milk and bread. And trust me, I used to stock shelves, I can remember on more than one occurance spending hours in the cooler just filling the milk back up as the people on the other side acted like it was the last milk in the world.

I LOVED it when it snowed, I used to get out my camaro (with huge tires on the back no less) and go out to slide all over. It was a blast. My favorite was a parking lot near our house with no light poles. You could fly across it and just slide all over doing donuts and such. I have never wrecked in the snow, but I slide a lot. I just know what to do when it slide, and most people (because they never practiced I guess) freak out when the brakes don't stop you, or the car starts to slide.

I don't get it. Last night, my youngest had ballet practice and my wife HATES to drive in the snow, it really scares her when the car slides even an inch. So I came home and took her over there. Not much snow at all on the roads, but wow, were they slick. The key is to practically stop whenever you need to turn, and for goodness sakes don't tailgate. I was driving down our road (downhill) and saw a snow plow truck up ahead, he was down at the stop sign, and then I realized he was backing up the hill in my lane!

But, I was paying attention, and already "trying" to stop. My ABS was going nuts and it took about 150 feet to stop and I was only going about 20 mph.

Later I slid sideways pulling out of the practice hall. I just steered into it and pulled right out.

When we got home, my wife asked about the roads, and my daughter said they were Terrible, she said "but, Daddy had fun, every time the car would slide he would laugh and giggle".

Yeah, I love the snow. One of the best parts of living in Ohio. Especially if you have a garage, and don't have to get into a cold car, and scrape windshields.

I live in Africa, we don't do snow. However I drive better in the snow than some people.

Last time I drove in the snow was last February in Italy. We were there 5 days and passed about 10 snow related accidents.

One thing I always did when teaching someone to drive was to show them spins, flicks, slides, J Turns, hand brake turns and basic skids. Pretty much any "un controlled" event you can name simply so they won't panic when it happens to them.

I love throwing cars around with abandon. One thing I do like is "modern" things like ABS, EBD, ESP, traction control and the like. They really do make driving easier. They definately raise the game of the average driver. They make things a little less sporty, but then I don't need to kill a mammoth for my breakfast either.

But some people shouldn't be driving a car in sunny daylight, let alone extreme weather at night, and no number of electronics will help them.

People in Vancouver go full retard when it snows. Drivers here are already some of the worst you can find, so put 3 inches of snow down and they panic. I know people who actively wish for rain after snowfall because they somehow think it's better for driving. Yeah, ice is fantastic compared to fresh snow....

I seriously don't get it, I can drive at full speed on the highway when I'm home in conditions that people can't even do 50km in here, it's just sad. Driving in snow REALLY isn't hard.

The city of my college apparently decided to cut costs by only plowing about 5 roads and shunning salt and sand all together. They probably realized that the Hautians will find a way to run into things regardless.  One good thing about having to be on the road at 5:20am is that they are clear of other cars and I get to have a lot of fun pulling the e-brake and sliding around corners.  The Focus does surprisingly well in snow and ice, even as the big trucks and SUVs are sliding around and getting stuck.

I was going up a hill during out last snow storm when I saw a guy in a dodge trying his best to make it up the hill...

It was pretty bad, and he kept curb checking it destroying the wheels on the passanger side. And it had a 30 day tag on it...

I pulled up next to him and rolled down my window, and as he rolled down his window I said "THAT THING GOT A HEMI"...

"AHHAHAHAHAHA" and floored it.

He wasn't amused, but I still chuckle thinking about it.

Anyone that can get a Hummer stuck should not be driving

I had to temporarily suspend my FEmbargo just because there was so much I agreed with in the following post.

OMG yes!

Same where I grew up and I can still see it with the newer residents* here in MT.

. . . and most people (because they never practiced I guess) freak out when the brakes don't stop you, or the car starts to slide.

This.  You can recognize these people by the saucer-sized eyes, open-mouthed scream and elbows-locked death grip they have on the wheel that forces them back against the driver's seat** when they experience the slightest traction loss.

But, I was paying attention, and already "trying" to stop.

This is the biggest thing right here . . . watch the surroundings and stop way early every time.

Later I slid sideways pulling out of the practice hall. I just steered into it and pulled right out.

And this is another big part of winter driving . . . don't panic and have an idea what to do.  Practice, such as in empty lots, helps a lot.  If you know what both you and your vehicle can/can't handle then you know the limits not to exceed and what to do if you do get in trouble . . . plus, it builds confidence that helps battle panic; which is really what gets most people in trouble.  (I.e. a little slide isn't generally a big deal until the driver freaks and buries the brake pedal in the floorboards.)

FEmbargo now resumed.

*Generally transplanted CA liberals who whine about the purity/sanctity of nature, support stuff like reintroducing the gray wolf and don't understand why they got eaten/trampled while trying to pet a grizzly bear/buffalo.
**It's a good bet that they also have both feet jammed against the break pedal at this time as well.

Also one of the scarriest(sp?) things about snow is the people who have AWD/4x4 and think they become invincible. AWD hatchbacks and pickup truck drivers seem to be the worst imo.

There are only three times that I 'need' 4wd (which my truck does NOT have) those are:
Going up my street (hill which is plowed quite often, horray property taxes)
Getting out of my driveway (hill)
10+ inches of snow(I can stay home)

I HATE the misconception that 4x4 gives you traction/control/braking on flat ground. Once you are already moving it all becomes irrelevant. The only time I have ever said "THANK JEEBUS FOR 4X4!" was when I was driving with my parents in my dads truck on i80 in 16'' of snow. Cars were stuck everywhere.

Have fun with that.  The city of Athens has exactly 0 plow trucks so when it snows, which isn't all that common, the snow sits on the roads for-e-v-e-r.

My miata completely ignores the snow on the road...that is until it goes too deep and I end up plowing with my front bumper.

EDIT:
If the roads are snowy, and a car has slideoff on the side of the road into a ditch....
...if the car is facing forward, it's FWD
...if the car is facing backwards, it's RWD
...if the car is upside down and on the other side of the ditch its AWD

I've only been stuck in snow and ice once in my Camaro,* and thats when I parked it off the road the night before it snowed at a friends house. It's not that difficult, you're just required not to be an idiot.

*Granted, I've spun it a heck of a lot of times, but thats mainly from either a)when I was a driving n00b, or b) power-sliding on the snow in empty parking lots for fun.

Ok so, some points here:

  1. Frozen ground feels really weird to walk on. Like marbles.
  2. Snow is really pretty when it first falls. I've never seen it in person, only on photos. It's really quite lovely.
  3. Everything about salt is gross. The way it feels when you walk on it, the way it sounds when you drive on it, the gross grey poop stuff that gets stuck on your car. Bleh.
  4. Dry powdery snow feels really weird when you touch it.
  5. Snowballs are really cool. The satisfying poof it makes upon contact, very nice.
  6. Driving in it can be tricky. My ESC kicked in about a dozen times on the way to the store last night, and I went across a bridge a little bit sideways.
I marched around campus and got some pictures of things last night in some decent snow, but I was shooting on 1/13 and for some reason thought that would be a good idea.

It wasn't.

Come on Whale, you're smarter than this Why does greenery such as trees and hedges make an area quieter? They act as sound baffles, absorbing and blocking sound. Snow magnifies this effect because its EVERYWHERE and the physical properties of soft snow.

Oh man- This.

I've got a friend of mine whose husband works as a machinist for one of the freight yards in the area- he said that while working the night shift more than once in winter time, he's had freight locomotives 'sneak up on him' because the snow literally muffles all sound.

Fun little snow story, when I was in college, we were getting pounded with snow, by dinner time we had almost a foot of the stuff on the ground, and it was still coming down. My roommate and I, as well as a couple of friends were sitting in the lounge on our floor looking out the window when we see a girl standing in the middle of the field in front of the residence hall. Everyone on campus knew her as 'the blind girl' and she had become lost in the snow on her way from one place to the other. No clue where the path even was.

We went out and got her out of the field and decided to walk her to where she was headed. My friend had her by the elbow as we were walking along, and all of a sudden we hear her tell this completely blind young lady to "Watch your step here, the curb is covered in ice and snow, so you won't be able to see it..."

I felt bad, but I laughed out loud.

Yeah, you want to wash it off (including underneath) whenever it warms up enough to do so.  Do not wash your car when it is below freezing unless you either dislike your door seals or enjoy walking to class in the cold.

(I am very glad we don't use salt up here.)

I'm fascinated by this sometimes, because it appears to be an inherent skill to walk/ run on ice that some people simply do not have. I'm sure a lot of it is to do with exposure, so if you move here from Iran you haven't had a chance really. Either way it's great to be really good at walking on snow/ ice and watch people have an impossible time with areas you just passed over.
