Mom and Dad couldn't pay the bill, and I'm not working right now, so I'm about to be internet-less AND phone-less. Bummer. Any one got some string and an empty soup can?

What?! Flip burgers, deep fry potatoes and scrub toilets. That's a job for bottom dwelling mouth breathers.

You are absolutely crazy.

When I queried a friend of mine about finding a job he argued that the only places available were "crap jobs" doing the very things mentioned aobve. Apparently his qualifications of making sammiches at the gas station were too high. Sigh.

Not sure if you're serious or not (Im leaning towards this being sarcastic) but a job is a job.

Fear not, for I did catch your sarcasm. And I totally agree with pntbl, a job is a job. Can't spend money you haven't made.

And if I had to go without a home internet connection, my next option beyond stealing unencrypted wi-fi would probably be tethering to my phone.

Washed dishes in a seafood restaurant in high school. Quite possibly the worst job I have ever had, but you do what you have to do to make money.  As far as waiting for your brother to get his contractors license, really? Stop sitting around waiting for someone else to man up. Get off your butt and go get a freaking job to help pay the bills. When I was young, broke, without a license and on probation for a DUI, I was working two jobs and riding my bike to both of them. I was averaging about 20-30 miles a day.  Probably the best shape I was ever in and working 75 hours a week keeps you busy enough that it's hard to even spend the money you are making.

Not many blizzards in Florida, but riding a bike 20 miles in 100+ degree heat can tend to suck a little. Looking back, it was actually pretty fun, except the time I jack knifed into a curb and ended up all bloody and dirty. Luckily I was on the way back home, not into work.

When I couldn't find anything else in the small town I lived in, I ended up sacking groceries at 18. Talk about humiliating. I did it for almost a year, too. Sometimes you just gotta suck it up and do what helps you survive. It's the worst job I can remember, I felt complete dirt every day, but it paid the payments on a new car and I always had spending money.

To add, I have a relative who paid his way through law school waiting tables. All the way through.

Not many blizzards but plenty of buzzards. Where in O-Town were you working at?

Also, I absolutely loved working at McDonald's when I was in high school.

When school was in, they let me be super flexible with my hours, knowing I was going to have school work come up and things that would get in the way of working. They never once had a problem with me having to call out or switch hours, even at last minute.

During summers and vacations I worked the late-night shift, so after the first dinner rush, I'd clean for about an hour and then do almost nothing the rest of the night except chat with my boss, listen to music, and invent games like "Toss the ketchup packet out of the drive-thru window and try to get it into the small hole in the decorative rock on the other side of the pull-in area," until the bars let out and we got busy again.

Not to mention, I actually lost weight while I worked there, because I had fresh salad stuff (Good greens, cherry tomatoes, carrot, etc.) to eat as much as I wanted, and it was crazy Florida balls hot in the kitchen where I stayed for hours and hours when it was busy.

And the perk of having awesome stories to tell on here for a few years.

If you think bagging groceries is humiliating at 18, how about scooping ice cream for 75 hours a week at 21?

I started working at 13. with a paper route. Lot of work for not much money at all...

Then at 14 I got a job with a friend who owned a carpet cleaning business, worked with him until I was 16. Great job, I worked when I wanted, and got paid $8.00 an hour (back in 87.)

I also started working at the local grocery store at 14, bagging groceries. Until I asked this lady who I though was pregnant when she was due...

Turns out, she just had a gut shaped like a watermellon...

Then I got to stock shelves after that! Ended up working there until I was 17.

Also had a job building bikes for the local bike shop for about 3 years. Good pay as he payed me based on the bikes I built ($10 a bike), and I could build a bike in about 15 minutes (take it out of the box and dial it all in).

So I was working 3 jobs at 16.

At 17 I quit most of those and started working at Lechmere which was a department store in Raleigh. My buddy and I built bikes, scooters, grills, and strung tennis racquets. Which was a good job and paid well for the time. And we would "test" out the stuff at times for fun.

I'm on the left, and Jon Byers, who started Eastern Bikes is on the right. His brother had a job there too, he was in charge of loss prevention. Which was a blast, those camera's were amazing and you could seriously zoom in and see what a person had in their hand! Why anyone would even try to steal when big brother is watching is just too crazy.

Funny part is, many people act like you won't have a life if you work a lot...

I had three jobs all through high school, and yet I still had time to do tons of modifications to my three cars, and also time to ride my bike enough to be one of the top riders on the east coast.

All because I was sick of having shoes that were worn out and clothes that were threadbare. So, I quit worrying about my parents lack of money, and just got a job myself. I ended up paying for most of the families groceries, and all of my own food and clothing, as well as hobbies and such.

And I don't regret a minute of it...

We all have the same number of minutes in a day, but some are better at making those minutes count.

Not really. I would take Lakemonte to Aloma to Orange Ave into downtown. Actually a really nice ride. From downtown to Fashion SQ, I would cut through the old neighborshoods and back behind where the Colonial mall used to be. It's amazing how quickly you can get places when you aren't having to sit in traffic.

Right now, sitting in this cold, cloudy depressing crap, I might give an appendage or two to be back riding my bike in the warm sunshine.

First job I had was a paper route. It was actually split between my brother and I when he needed a sub but he paid me a pretty decent wage. I started subbing for  the other paper boys in the neighborhood too who had different routes. After that I got a job at an ice cream shop and did that until I was an assistant manager. Worked at a sporting goods place at the same time as well as started to install car stereos. Then at Around 17 I graduated high school early by taking classes at the local community college and joined the Marine Corps. Went through my training at Camp Pendleton and went off to BRC (Basic Reconnaissance Course) which also eventually including Parachutists Courses all the way up to HALO and then Combat Divers Course in FL. From there I was sent so Iraq which I found to be ironic seeing as how there was nowhere to dive! A few other tours in other countries and so on. After my time there I transferred into the United States Air Force as a TACP and then a JTAC and have conducted a few operations in Afghanistan. The tours are much shorter than the Marine Corps and I work with Army Special Forces now but all in all it has been one hell of a ride. My knees haven't been so friendly to me as of late but I am hoping they don't get me a medical. Oh and somewhere between all of that I was able to take enough classes online and sometimes on campus to get me a fancy law degree. Maybe I'll use it someday!

I have my J.D. and passed the Bar. Then I essentially got bored within 3 months of being at a desk job and went back in to Active Duty via the USAF due to shorter deployments.

0321 can be boring at times. In Iraq things were mostly like basic infantry for us Recon guys. I was selected 4 months in to my tour for more specialized missions due to extensive training that I had gone through. My tour there was eventually cut short and I was sent elsewhere. I was able to meet some extremely great people through everything I did, and also meet and engage some truly...NOT great people. I didn't stay 0321 for long seeing as how I had Combat Dive/Parachute training and became 0326. That's when things got really interesting.

i've had a job since i was 13... worked at a cub scout camp for 6 summers for next to nothing an hour.  Then I worked at a cousins sub shop.  After I moved to college I lived off of seasonal jobs... UPS for a winter, then I got the temp job at the law firm Rambino worked for.  that was sweet  for the 3 summers it lasted.  After that I got a job in specimen processing at the lab that I'm now a tech at.

It's weird thinking I'm now working in my career, getting enough sleep each night and not having to worry about finals or a class schedule.

Haha, those are the best part of any bottom-tier job.  When I washed dishes there was a 6" hole maybe 5 feet above the station; no idea what it was originally for, but we would stand on the other side of the kitchen and see if we could ring it with lemon slices.  We had plenty of more games, but I can't seem to recall them at the moment.

My mother and I still laugh about this. It got to the point that when she went to pick me up from work that she would cover the passenger seat in a garbage bag, we would drive home with the windows open, and I would have to drop trou and leave my clothes on the front porch in another garbage bag. After going in and showering, I would have to go get my clothes and take them immediately to the washing machine that was already turned on to help reduce the amount of time that my rancid clothes sat around cooking. I was not allowed to bring my shoes inside the house and at one point one of them disappeared. I think some varmit ran off with one thinking it was a dead mackeral or something. Amazingly, I worked that job IIRC for nearly 6 months before getting another dishwashing job at a pizza place.

I can still remember the smell 26 years later.

I realize that it's a complete waste of post to respond to internet 'tudes with logic, but I'm a sucker for it, so here goes-

When you post on the Internet, certain assumptions are made. The first of which is that you're being completely honest, because frankly we have no way to prove you're not, and the second that whatever information you fail to give, we fill in.

So you gripe because you're losing your Internet due to waiting for your job to kick back in / your parents can't afford it / whatever. That's not alot of info. So we say, "Hey, it takes a month for the Internet bill to come in,  and then there's that whole late period where it takes time for them to realize they ain't getting their funds, so let's say at least 6 weeks from your last bill. So that's damn near two months. We also assume that, since you say your parents can't pay it, they're probably low income, so it's even tougher to go without a job for that time.

Soooo...the obvious response is "SIr, you need to get a job pronto." And then you come back and tell us that you're only on a two week downer period, and it's not that big of a deal to just wait around until your work picks back up.

Kinda makes no sense if you think about it.

And instead of replying to oldpb's post like some butt hurt child, why not be appreciative that someone took the time to respond to your angsty internet whining with a well thought out, albeit critical response and give them the same regard.

Don't you have a degree jmac?  Oh, it came back to me.  Really, you can't get a job as a chef right now?  I guess that part of the economy probably hasn't fully recovered, but man.  That sucks. Go back to school, I guess.  That's what most broke people who can't find a job do.

Also, underground makes me lulz.

Hint buddy: just come in here and say "You guys misunderstood me -- it's only two weeks off".  Also, the fact that you took time to complain in the manner you did is stupid.

Excuse me for taking offense at someone telling me to ""Stop waiting for someone else to man up and get off your butt and get a job" My original post had a reference to tin cans with strings. I'm not worried, and if I was looking for sympathy, I'd post on Oprah's forum. Read ALL the post, not just the ones you want to pick apart. Besides, why would any one want all the details? I doubt any one wants to hear about my moms unemployment, or my dads job at autozone, or my annoying half blind uncle. or do you?

I did read all of the post. And I responded to all of the post. I just didn't quote it all. Perhaps you should re-read mine?

I'll refer you back to my two rules of the Internet. No details, we fill in the rest. And you gave us just enough details to make it seem like you had a bad situation, oldpb was simply giving you the advice that he thought you needed. It's the Internet sir, misconceptions are had on a daily basis. I'll bet you, just from his record on the forum, that had you expressed your offense at what he said in a polite manner, he would have apologized. Also-

This is pretty much the basis of all English, I can't help you here man. Details=story. No details=twitter post. Let me give you me an example of how this comes off to us-

Um, dude, You need help. You need to get to AA as soon as possible, you may have a problem.

Like hell I'm going to AA when I've only been drinking for two weeks! Why would I do that? You're like the people that never called my mom back after the paternity test!

See? Vague. A few details and a Hallmark card on father's day would have solved alot for Person A. Instead, he lashed out against Person B and wept himself to sleep.

DON'T BE PERSON A. Wink

It's weird, the phone is supposed to be shut off, but if I unplug and replug the line, I can make calls. Same with my internet router.
