I explored the Queen City these past two days, venturing to the western side of Ohio for the first time since Sandusky.
I very much enjoyed the city. It has a very interesting personality, as much as a city can have a personality. Much more so than Columbus, which other than the Short North neighborhood, is kind of dull.
Ok, so thoughts on Cincinnati:
- Cincinnati Chili is kind of strange if you are used to chili being something spicy hot. It's brownish and more meaty and greasy, but in its own right, it's pretty darn good. I ate at the (apparently) world-famous Camp Washington Chili House, where I had a James Beard Award-winning meal for $5. It was delicious.
- Everything at the Findlay Market made me hungry. I want to go there and buy everything and cook delicious things for a thousand years. Next time I go to Cincinnati I am going to bring a cooler and load up on goods.
- The area around University of Cincinnati is really cool, but for some reason has about six Indian restaurants in three square blocks.
- The area round Xavier University is the only area near a college I've ever seen without a Pita Pit.
- Even in a city with two sizable universities, all you see on people and in stores is Buckeyes merchandise.
- To get to some things within the city, you have to go to Kentucky.

Go to Nicholson's, you won't regret it.

I have been through Cincinatti twice a year for 8 years and have yet to actually stop and do anything there. My wife has made the trip down to the outlet mall just north of Cincy a couple of times, but that's about it.
Personally, I kind of like Columbus. Fair amount of nice restaurants and Easton reminds me of Florida for some reason.

I went to Cincinnati twice in high school for national championships, but didn't explore too much. I don't honestly know where we stayed in the city, but it seemed pretty much standard for a small town, middle-America city.

Dude, and you didn't call me?... sniff. sniff...
Findley market is pretty cool. Jungle Jims in Fairfield is amazing as well.
Did you get to fountain square? That is the heart of the city. They put up a ice skating rink in the winter, which is pretty cool, and GREATERS ice cream has a store there... You gotta get some raspberry chocolate chip ice cream. Best in the world.

Thats your problem bro. | If my problem is good taste, than yes it is. The food at Skyline is terrible. Ate there with all three of my kids, my wife and brother in law. All had something different, all of it was bad.

Just get a 3-way or a cheese coney. Everything else isn't classic or very good.
Also I guarantee you its better when you're actually in Cincinnati

Yeah, he is talking crazy... Skyline is amazing chilli.
The Skyline plant is right next to my plant... And they make Chilli once a week... Oh the smell...
We can usually be found at our local Skyline that day.
I never had Cincinnati style chilli until I moved here. Now I eat it once a week.

I think every major city has some kind of market like that, you just need to find it. In Detroit we have the Eastern Market.

I got mine with beans, five-way.
I also prefer my chili to have beans if I'm eating it by itself as chili, but atop something I'd rather it just be meat and sauce.

Strange Cincinnati chilli spagetti ordering tips.
"dry" good if you are wearing a nice shirt or tie... They drain it after making it so it has less "juice".
"Soupy" this has double the "juice" of a typical 3-4 or 5 way. Many people like it this way.
I usually order a 4 way dry, light onions, myself. And double the "chips". (Cincy style oyster crackers that are served with it)
Did you get a bib?

Akron just got a Pita Pit in the summer of 2010. Such a shame the 'Kron Kids didn't know what it was.
I only go to Findlay if I'm hungry.

My girlfriend is from Cincinnati, we get a LOT of Cincinnatians are school here. As a consequence of her birthplace, I get to spend a lot of time up there. The Museum at Union Terminal is amazing, I highly recommend it. Marty's Hop and Vine and Bacall's are both excellent places to eat at a decent price as well. Cincinnati is FULL of tiny little mom and pop style joints that are fantastic to eat at.
Skyline is AWFUL. Nicole was sorely disappointed when I hated it. I highly recommend Graeter's Ice cream, it is fantastic. The area around University of Cincinnati is in Clifton, yes? That is a kinda shady little area of town.

Agreed, I forget the name of the Chicago pizzaria, but wow... that stuff is insanely good. And located right in the heart of downtown. It takes 30 minutes to cook though... But, worth it, even though after 2 pieces you are stuffed.
Speaking of pizza and Cincinnati. We have some excellent pizza places here, today I was talking to Mike Larosa, who is one of the owners of Larosa's pizza here in town. Very good pizza that has a very different taste than your normal chain pizza places. I frequent the one in Oxford quite often.
