That's what I faced last night to get home. What is normally a 1 hour trip took me 8 hours.

Not because of the weather

Not because of my driving skills

Not even due to the fact that NONE of the roads were plowed

But because the federal gov't refused to allow people to telecommute/work from home/leave early enough to beat the storm. The OPM (office of personnel management) also failed to notify DDOT, VDOT, and MDDOT of their decision to dismiss people at 3PM which meant that none of the traffic signals were set to the out-bound rush hour schedule. This meant instant gridlock. Worst commute I've heard of so far? 13 hours to go 10 miles.

That must have been the most aggravating experience. Situations like that call for some mood adjusters to be on hand.

I have a driving philosophy: If you are on the same road that I am, whether you're going the other direction, in the other lane, 3 cars ahead of me, etc; I hate you. You will, have, or are currently doing something that is causing me to become angry with you, so please turn off at the next intersection. Thank you.

This.

However, I was driving the other week and actually encountered a driver who gave me a little bit of hope in mankind.  I was in the right lane on the highway coming up behind a slower car.  There was a rather large truck who was coming up on me in the left lane which would have made me slow down and wait behind the slower car while he passed.  I was just about to tap the brakes when, to my surprise, the truck slowed down and let me over to pass.  I nearly crapped myself with joy.

This. 1000 times this.

I have become increasingly intolerant of the people I have to share the road with.

They all suck but me.

Tallen, tough break on the drive. I don't know if I could have done it without cracking.

double the koodos (sp). In NY you just have to ID a stop sign and poof, you get it. I took it in the snow though so it was EXTRA fun. Thing i hate about the driving test is that it doesn't prep you for some of the things you'll experience on the road or highway

Meh, I didn't really have much incentive to do it in the past, but turning 18 made me not want to be a loser and have to rely on others to drive me around. It's intense enough driving for the first time on the road, i'm glad now that I live in a rural town in New Brunswick and there isn't much traffic. I shudder now at the thought of having to learn how to drive on the streets of South Florida.

(stick-shift too btw)

Merc, wasn't me on arfcom. But so many people around here had the same experience. A friend of mine had a 9 hour ordeal to get home the same night.
