Gatyr can squat 335 pounds!! Eat it, omnivores.
I guess we can make this a general exercise/weight-lifting thread so that this isn't spamming. So, who lifts? What's your split? Numbers? Goals? Runners/sport-specific exercisers? I know a LOT about lifting now, and there are a LOT of misconceptions out there (even among people who think they know what they are doing), so feel free to ask questions.
I'm only squatting just over 1.5x my body weight (which isn't special for anyone who lifts seriously), but I'm happy for two reasons: first, it's a personal best; second (and more importantly) this happened after maintaining my routine for just three weeks (and that was after a nearly month-long hiatus from lifting). For anyone who cares, I'm doing my best to do DC training for the moment.

I work out every day, but my bench press is pathetic for someone my size (6'5" 217). I think I can bench around 200. Never done squats, no idea there.
Excercise-wise-I do half an hour cardio (either running, bicycle, or in this weather stationary bike), crunches, pull up bar, then the bowflex last. Usually around an hour and fifteen minutes in the morning. I'm in pretty good shape, but I definately need to start a free weight routine.

I stopped lifting for about 7 months mainly because I lost all will power, but I started again last week. I haven't started lifting heavy weights yet since I don't wanna hurt or strain myself, but I know I'm no where near the strength I was.

Work out 5+ days a week, run a few times too weather permitting. Also know a lot about lifting, nutrition, and a ton of other theory behind it.
It pretty much engulfs most of my free time. Strato: Yes, yes you do need to start a new routine lol.

What is a good routine if you're time crunched? I know nothing about nutrition and excercise...lol...like I said I'm pretty fit, but I would like to get more fit / make sure it lasts

335lbs is a lot of roughage.
I believe that's also heavier than Bono, congrats on setting the new record.

If you have an hour and fifteen minutes each morning your hardly time crunched. I can do my workouts in about 45min.

I was meaning more like getting to a gym. I usually just wake up early before school to work out, but there's no way I can make it to a gym that consistently.

I lift every other day and do cardio on the days in between. Right now I am maxing my bench at 250. My goal is to put up twice my body weight at 270 I still have a little ways to go. Really crawls up at higher weights.

You have a bench in your house?

My workplace out here has a Gym on site so I've been going daily, doing upper body 3 days a week and lower body 2 days a week. Finally coming close to benching 135lbs, I need to sit down for a while and really figure out a good routine.

Me? I do at my house where I am originally from but I am currently at school. I just use the school gym, I don't use the one in my house when I am at home anyway. They are metric weights and it is weird. What would normally be 135 is like 132 or something like that.

I do have a bench, but my neighbor has it ATM. Right now the only equipment I have per se is the excercise bike and the bowflex.
The bowflex has done wonders for my arms though, it worked alot better than I thought it would. But I imagine I'd do alot better with free weights.

A LOT. How hard exactly would it be for you to get to a gym?

It's possible, but probably only 2 or 3 days a week. I can get a bench, it's not so much a money issue, but I don't have a spotter.
I'm sure I could work a gym in if I tried.

Well played, gentlemen.
stratoaxe wrote:

Three days a week is a good lower-bound if you work hard enough, and you could be out of the gym in less than 45 minutes if you don't allow yourself to zone out and you can save cardio for other times. I only workout three times a week myself, and it works for me.
And freeweights are generally considered the only way to go if you have access to them. The bigger douche bags who lift seriously have a holier-than-thou attitude towards people who use machines because the workout is really that much better with dumbbells/barbells than with machines (and because they are douche bags).
The simplest reason that I know of for that is because freeweights require you to use stabilizer muscles in the joints you use to lift, and you typically have to work the core to do the lift, so there's that gem as well.
And you should definitely do more squats and deadlifts. There's usually that douche-bag-attitude toward people who exercise with weights but don't squat, except this time it's more warranted. There really isn't a better lift to start your workout with than squats, deadlifts, and (to a lesser extent) the bench press. You work an extremely high number of muscle groups for the first two lifts, and your central nervous system gets the shock it needs to stimulate muscle growth (which has to be done, btw; if you don't do that, you don't get nearly as much from your workout as you could).

Google 'starting strength' if you just need a good routine to stick with.
Past that, you really only need to work each muscle group twice a week
(unless you are using 'supplements' to speed up recovery time) if you
are doing strength training...which you are if you are using weights.

Crossfit is a good program, but you really have to give it your all, all
the time to get the results you want for muscle growth and strength. I
decided a long time ago that doing crossfit by myself isn't for me
because I don't have the drive to do all of that with the drive required
to get everything from it, but you might be different.
If you can afford to do that at one of their training centers, then that's a good option.

Right now I'm mainly focused on reducing body fat (currently at 12, looking to get to around 8). Currently lifting 3 days a week and running 4 miles on the lift days. Off days in the winter I do the indoor bike for 40 miles or 2 hours, whichever is more or if it's nice outside I go for a 6-7 mile run. Weekends I do a 10 mile run. My times for the runs suck, but they're definitely improving.
As far as lifting goes, my numbers are pretty low. I'm 5'8", 152 lb and my 1RM on bench is 165. Funny thing is my 1RM with a french press is 130 which I guess means I have a crazy weak chest. Leg press is 520 lb and I can do about 15 good pullups. It's been fun watching the numbers improve since I started though.

Worked out for a few years, felt good. Started going to the bars and got a new broad, now I could care less about getting jacked. But I do wanna cut down the beer gut now!
I've decided to try to keep up with bmx during the summer and snowboarding in the winter to keep me moving. So far this season i've put 48 hours into shoveling snow! If that means anything.
For me it was easier to work out without a gf, I had A LOT more motivation.
Now I gotta workout for myself, not so motivating....

While I was in Iraq last year I was beasting. Squat and Bench were all I maxed in. I wanted to do deadlift max as well, but being so tall it's hard and I find my back developes well without it.
Anyway, I benced 305 and squatted 365. I didn't really take squatting and lower body serious until that year of deployment which explains why my chest is so far ahead of my legs. I was 6'2", 205 at 9-10% bf. I have pictures on my wifes comp that I'll post up later if you want. My biggest issue with most people and their squat max is their range of motion. If it's not 90 degrees then it's not a squat max, just a partial. I'm not saying that's you, but almost all of my army buddies claim their numbers higher than they are and when someone calls them on it and they have to do the full rep they drop their number around 20 lbs.
I'm embarrassed to say I've dropped of a good bit since then since changing duty stations, but I still benched 225 for 4 the other day. Used to do it for 10 if that gives you an idea, but I have another deployment to Aghan coming up so hopefully I'll pass where I was in Iraq.

ATG is the only way to do it. I see people lifting as much as I did yesterday, but they had a six-inch range of motion. How that constitutes a lift is beyond me.

When I was big into powerlifting 6 years ago my best squat (at or below parallel) was 405lbs. Best deadlift was 475lbs. Best bench raw was 425lbs, with shirt and elbows wrapped, 475lbs. In competition, best bench was 365lbs, best deadlift was 455lbs.

Any of you manly mans use pre workout supplements like Jack3d? What about other supplements like protein, fish oil, etc.?

I used to do prework our things. There were good for me, untill I stopped using them, it was harder to get that "I WANNA WORK OUT!" feeling. As I did after taking one of the prework out drinks full of caffine. The kind I was using was called "blow" it felt like 2 redbulls.
I also did the creatine thing, but got too big for my own liking.
Just started working out again actually. Get my mind off the end of the snow season. Pretty brutal how much i've dropped. Looking forward to getting back up there.

Protein, creatine, BCAA's, fish oil, vitamin D are the proven effective supplements. Pre workout supplements are garbage. Don't bother.

Yea, I can see where ur comming from there. But, I'm already a bigger guy and cutting weight is the hardest part I find when working out. After I did the creatine a bit I couldnt handle the stretch marks, it was gross. I realize I probably went about it the wrong way. Shoulda dropped more weight before gaining any muscle.
