Whatever you think of him, he's at least a good representation of what we think of in this country when we think of a pro-small gov't Christian conservative, and an asset to the forum in that respect. Although this might be better off in PM format, considering the high average political IQ of this place, it might as well be public. I'd encourage mods to close this if it gets personal or simply ridiculous. My intent here is not to play "gotcha" (we have real debate threads for that Wink) but rather to figure out the basis for his beliefs. I'm going to keep this in generalities if I can rather than specific modern examples to reduce controversies. I do not mind answering any similar questions from him myself out of fairness. I figure this could be a good exercise for me in being as neutral as possible considering that I want to teach social studies, and to give the guy a chance to explain his political philosophy in a coherent manner instead of us trying to lift it out of his reactions to various modern issues. I'm finishing a Bachelor's in History /Ed with a minor in Poli-Sci for what it's worth, and consider myself to be from a family with mixed political views. Very politically/socially conservative grandparents, socially liberal/ fiscally conservative parents and an education experience that was fairly mixed from what I expected in MA in terms of professors I have had if not the curriculum. Personally I see myself as a slightly more nationalistic Libertarian, since I'm somewhat more pragmatic than Libertarians in general. Although I really have no power over this thread, I'd prefer it if I ask the questions, FE do responses, open for follow-ups, and FE and those who agree with him for rebuttals.

PS- Please play FE, if you want to get people to see your side this is as good of a chance as any, I promise I won't try to Katie Couric you with leading questions (I've hated her style since long before anyone knew who Sarah Palin was) and anything you need to PM me about won't be re-posted to the general forum. This isn't a witch-hunt, I think your viewpoints could be representative of political ideology i don't get to deal with on a regular basis considering my geography, and I think I have tried my hardest to be fair in response to your posts in the past.

First Question: Who is your favorite founding father, and why?

I think this should be open question, rednekk. There are lots of things I'd love to know about FE.

let's see if he'll play along first, I'd like to start with some of the longer-running threads in US political thought before moving forward. It's not like there weren't several schools of thought present in the founding of our republic, I'd like to see what he buys into. If nothing else, he's a great case study.

Hmm... this should get interesting...

Well, Washington would be my top pick, but not for any huge "political" reasons, as I don't really look at the founding fathers as people that I "look up to" as I don't know them. I respect greatly what they did with the constitution and the way they predicted our current issues. Trying to figure out who someone was, when they lived so far in the past is difficult as peoples perceptions change so drastically over time.

For example, today everyone thinks that the original founders weren't "religious"... Which is ridiculous based on the study that http://wallbuilders.com - wallbuilders has done.

So mostly we hear and read what people want us to hear and read... So it is hard to take anything seriously as we can't talk to these people ourselves. And to me, it is hard to get a grasp on someone without at least talking to them face to face, to find out if they are what they say they are.

Perceptions are not reality. Especially perceptions based on the written word of others.

Washington, interesting pick. His farewell address did indeed warn of multiple potential problems the new Republic would face, as well as his thoughts on religion and it's importance to a free society. I actually used parts of it as a basis for an assignment for high school students (public debt, foreign alliances, political parties). My follow-up would be what about Hamilton's economic plan of absorbing state debts from the revolution when several states had already paid there's off, establishing credit by borrowing from other nations, and creating a national bank? Would you think of that as a necessity or agree with Jeffersonian Republicans in thinking that this was unconstitutional?

Man, I must have been in a very vindictive mood last night.  Sorry to derail the thread, my bad.

Aaand the personal attacks start. Well, that didn't take long.

Instead of attacking, why don't you ask me what I mean? Naa, that would take away your fun wouldn't it. The goal is to demean and diminish your political opponent in all circumstances... Not try to understand their viewpoints.

No wonder we have such a huge political divide today. Just as there has always been. People just want to lump everyone they disagree with into certain groups.

I get it, I do it as well to a degree.

but, to say we can't understand Obama without meeting him face to face... Is silly, we do meet him face to face. In a medium that wasn't available when our founding fathers were here.

TV and video

Obama has been on TV more than any president in History. Trust me, TV does a good job of letting you hear, AND see what they are saying. And he puts most of it on his white house website.

Obama lies on TV all the time, when he is talking to "me". For example this week, he was on TV talking about Egypt, and he was interviewed by O'Reilly before the super bowl.

In both interviews he lied multiple times. The media in our country, who used to have to interview politicians and then let us know what we needed to know as there was no mass coverage of politicians then held a more important job. Today, they are margenilized as they cover for him, and don't call out his obvious lies.

Here are some of the doozies he told.

He didn't raise taxes once.

Oh really? I seem to remember a massive tobacco tax, tanning booth tax, and OBAMACARE. Which his lawyers have said is a "Tax".

and that was right after he said he didn't want to redistribute wealth...

Another lie.

Because in the same week he told the chamber of commerce (also on video) that he wants corporations to "share their profits with their workers".

http://www.whitehouse.gov/photos-and-video/video/2011/02/07/president-obama-addresses-us-chamber-commerce - http://www.whitehouse.gov/photos-and-video/video/2011/02/07/president-obama-addresses-us-chamber-commerce

wait... isn't that by definition redistribution?

Or the whole Egypt had a peaceful protest, not one shot fired, ect. Obviouse lies.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/photos-and-video/video/2011/02/11/president-obama-historic-day-egypt - http://www.whitehouse.gov/photos-and-video/video/2011/02/11/president-obama-historic-day-egypt

So with video, we can "meet" and understand people we never will have access to in the past. And future generations will be able to look back with clarity and see the lies told for themselves... So they can make proper judgements about their history and the players in it.

And it's another political thread.

That took  . . . 14 hours?

I'll make sure to check back in this thread later for a few Youtube videos and links from WND.

Go die in a fire evillepaintball.

FE, is there any chance of getting your opinion on Hamilton's economic plan and arguments both for and against before you go into full defensive mode?
