I've been wondering, since i've seen some posts where people mention stuff they do or have done within the military, both US and Non US (shoutout to Brihard, Carl)...what's your MOS, training, tours, posts, etc.? I always think its cool to know someone's been somewhere that a lot of people wouldn't think of going (Bosnia, Serbia, Iraq, etc). I know there are a lot of vets and active guys floating around, so post some stuff you've done! As for me, i'm finishing up rotc this May, I branched Engineers. As far as training, i've completed Airborne and Air Assault. No tours, but have done various training exercises at Ft. Dix, Deavons, Camp Smith, Ft. Bliss (attached to a unit for a 3 week stint), and Ft. Lewis. Heading to Fort Leonardwood sometime after May to do the Engineers Basic officer course. |

Just over seven years in the army reserves; infantry noncommissioned. One tour to Afghanistan, for six months in '08-09, mostly doing convoy escorts. I'm a Master Corporal- E5 equivalent rank. I command a section of ten soldiers, so my actual job is I think equivalent to an E6. I've been a section commander pretty constantly since I got home from tour, so nearly two years now. All in all, about half of my service has been full time for periods of a month or more; the longest stint was 19 months for my predeployment training and my tour. I've instructed recruit training, and I've also taught Corporals who are leadership candidates on their Primary Leadership Qualification. Other than deployment, my training's brought me out to Wainwright, Alberta; Ft. Drum, NY, and Ft. Bliss, TX/NM. Good times; love it. They may be sending me on my sergeant's course this summer. ------------- "Abortion is not "choice" in America. Coming up on my third year here. During the school year, I study at the Royal Military College of Canada (our version of West Point) patiently awaiting the day next year when I get to graduate, walk out of here and never look back. I train in the summers for my job. I am an armoured officer but have been considering switching to an infantry officer for some time now. I have two training courses under my belt and no tours yet. In my first summer, I completely my basic military officer qualification course and last summer, I did my common army phase course. Thus, I am half trained in my trade. This summer, I will hopefully be doing my phase 3 armoured crew commander course However, it is more likely that I am going to be sent away on a second language training course in order to become bilingual as it is required of me to graduate. ------------- <just say no to unnecessarily sexualized sigs> |

My understanding is that officer DP1.1s are heavily backlogged, including for armour. My regiment has a 2lt who came over recently from reg force armour after getting sick of waiting for three years at the armour school to try to get to a regiment. Realize that when you get in as a new junior officer in the combat arms, you get one and only one shot at it if you're going to keep getting troops. Your platoon/troop command will be very short; maybe 6 to 8 months. By the end of that it will be known within your regiment;s leadership whether you're worth grooming to someday lead a company, or whether you'll spend most of the rest of your career in staff jobs. ------------- "Abortion is not "choice" in America. Infantry is not really backlogged but Armour is... rumors say 2+ years due to lack of working vehicles to train on. However, RMC gets a sort of priority for summer courses. I am hoping to take advantage of it before I graduate and am stuck in Gagetown for three years. (literally hell on earth). I understand the second point, and realize such. I enlisted USAF in Aug 08, completed Tech School for Nuclear Weapons Technician in Jan 09, and will be cross training into Aircraft Hydraulic Systems Aug 10', right at my 3 yr mark. I have been to TX and MT, and will be heading back to TX for Hydro school.
I was a maintainer for the current fleet of re-entry vehicles used on the Minuteman III ICBM system. We do all the electrical testing, as well as general maintenance and component replacement. We also take care of storing, and loading for shipping purposes. Now I've switched to a different back shop that is the control center for the WSA (weapons storage area). We coordinate all the activities and act as the intermediary for all the different agencies we deal with. I've done a little bit of everything from general maintenance, and participated in START treaty operations. It's been an interesting time and I'm a little sad I'm crosstraining. I still haven't received my assignment, but should end up somewhere on the east coast working heavies (KC-135, C-17, C-130s etc..). After working with nukes, and soon planes the last major component of the USAF to cover would be satellites, which is on my to-do list. ------------- USAF Special Weapons Technician. |

I'm a Corporal in the Canadian Armoured corp. I am employed in a 25mm gunners position. Have a tou to Kandahar Province, Afghanistan and Just under nine years in. Done all kind of stuff but right now I am aiding courses being run at the Armoured School in Gagetown, New-Brunswick.
We train young Non-Commissioned all the way to the senior position of Sergeant-Major. We also train young Armoured Officers, like Carl, for their Phase 3 and 4 of training before they are remotely employable in the forces. And Carl, if you have any questions about the state of the trade or the School itself, ask away as I have boots on the ground and can get you the info you need. Plus I have been on enough ARTL Mods 1 and 2 to triple qualify me as an officer! hahahahaha ------------- A second class drive is always better than a first class walk. |

I've thought about joining armoured in the Canadian Forces, especially with Canada getting those new Leo 2A6M's. Its kinda something that I've dreamed of doing since I was 7 years old. |

United States Marine Corps - 0326 1st Recon Bn Bravo Company. Schools include Airborne, Ranger, Pathfinder, SERE, Navy Combat Diver Course, and obviously BRC (Basic Reconnaissance Course). They generally make most SF members go through multiple schools either during or before deployments. Quite a few of us went through schools from multiple different branches including those outside of the US if the higher ups found it necessary for us to obtain those skills. Some deployments like Iraq and Afghanistan are pretty well known but others aren't so much and are still considered classified. I left the Marine Corps honorably at the rank of E5 (Sgt). After my initial contract with the Marine Corps I switched branches in to the United States Air Force and am now a JTAC. All of my other SF qualifications carried right over and I had to take one more class which was the USAF TACP course. Fun trip to Florida. Since my transfer I have served mostly in Afghanistan. I should point out to those who don't know that typical USAF deployments are 90 days. As of right now I am on medical and will probably take my DD214 and leave the military as my knees have taken a beating. I'm back in the car stereo business which doesn't necessarily help my knees but I'll figure that one out later. Still debating on applying to law firms or waiting until I finish my marketing degree and continue down that path.

Marine Corps, 1833, Amphibious Assault Vehicle Crewman, 1987-1992. Corporal E-4, 3 major deployments, 2 with some trigger time involved, Panama and Liberia. Primary Marksmanship Instructor rating and Range Coach, Shot in 2 divisional matches (shooting matches, Service Rifle, Known Distance course), Naval gun fire qualified, Artillery fire qualified (Steel on Steel) and a various kit bag of additional training too long to list and no one cares anyway.

Finishing up my last year of Army ROTC. Branched MP and going active duty. I spent a month with an MP platoon in Germany this summer and, like GI, spent some time at Ft. Lewis and will be heading to Ft. Leonardwood after May. -------------

However, The vast majority of pers coming into the corp get shoved into recce and will never set foot inside a Tank. Unfortunate, but that is the way of the CF.
